The sound of steel-toed boots stomping across the cement floor filled the entire house. Violent thumping of heavily armed men trotting around like horses made my ears ache. Each corner they turned created a painfully high-frequency squeak and every closed, wooden door they met was kicked clean off of its steel hinges.

I pulled my legs in, holding my breath as a dozen sets of running feet rushed past me; “Don’t be scared, this is just another nightmare,”I thought.

And hearing all the footsteps gather to a halt in front of the room beside me, I knew it was just that. Yelling followed behind a brief moment of blistering silence, I lifted my tiny hands to my ears and closed my eyes to avoid the gunshot that would come next.

Bang.

It’s hot.

Opening my eyes with my heart beating through my chest, I found myself curled up in a ball.Where the fuck am I? My half conscious mind struggled to compile reality from the dream I lived moments before.

Dream? No, that was a nightmare, a recurring one. I laid motionlessly until my confusion faded- it was odd waking up in an unfamiliar place. But as of now, it’s home.

Introductions are lame, so I’ll make this short.

My name is Baylee Dmitré, I’m an eighteen year old delinquent. And as of today, after nine years of living with my grandfather, I’m back at ‘home’ with my mom. That’s it, plain and simple, right?

I got up from the stoop by the window where I had slept, exhaling in frustration at the cluttered box of junk I hadn’t yet unpacked.

There’s something about moving I find unbearably exhausting,I needed a reason to avoid puttin’ my stuff away. I opened my phone, no new messages; I guess I’ve come to expect that.

Laundry it is.

I grabbed the hamper full of dirty clothes before heading out of my new room and down the steps. I had intended to take care of my laundry earlier, but I was so tired after traveling into town that I sat down and fell into a deep sleep.

My ears flickered; the sound of chatter and clinking of silverware became louder with each step. I stopped to peek over the corner of the staircase to see my mother and kid brother in the kitchen.

“Mom, look!” Max shouted, banging a spoon against the island table.

“It didn’t break, can you believe it?” he laughed, waving the spoon around.

What the hell is going on?

These idiots are giggling over silver spoons? I mean it was a grade up from plastic, still; getting that excited was unbearably cringe. I grew up impoverished too, but this was strange as shit and I wanted nothing to do with it.

So, taking a hard U-turn, I began walking back upstairs in an attempt to avoid the odd pair I called family."Baylee, don’t try to run-I can hear your footsteps a mile away,” my mother Susan called in a chipper voice.

Dammit, I’ve been caught.I sighed, rolling my eyes before coming down the steps once more. The sound of her voice which once calmed me as a child, no longer held the same effect. Instead I found myself irritated by her squeaky, childlike voice.

“You have such heavy feet, just like your father. He wasn’t very good at sneaking off either,” my mother smiled, stroking Max’s head as he leaned over the table to show me the box of silverware.

I pushed the box away from me, “I wasn’t trying to be sneaky, I just didn’t want to be apart off... Whatever the fuck this is,” I objected walking into the kitchen with caution.“Oooh, she swore!” Max screamed.

“Why the hell are you yelling, I’m two fucking feet away from you!” I barked feeling my sensitive ears ring from the loud pitch of his voice.

“Baylee, language! Max, don’t be so loud. Your sister’s still adjusting to the new space, let’s not add anymore stress,” My mother soothed in a gentle tone.

“Whatever,” I scoffed, grabbing a blueberry muffin from the counter and biting into it as I scanned the large room.

“Baylee, you wanna see all the kitchen tools we have? It’s all real and stuff, so it won’t melt when you use it to cook! Even if it’s really, really hot! We tried it, wanna see?” my brother Max asked with huge, excited eyes.

“No,” I growled, watching his expression become as irritated as mine.

These two make me uncomfortable.

Kindness, makes me uncomfortable; especially coming from people so unfamiliar. Even though they look so much like me, and share the same blood: the presence of my mother and half brother felt foreign. It was only this morning I reunited with them after 9 years of living apart.

Traveling by train at the crack of dawn, with only a worn-out backpack full of worn-out clothes. Eventually finding my destination to a house our family could never afford, in a part of town unfit for a bunch of hicks. Then welcomed by a couple of smiling faces I hadn’t seen in years...

Everything about this situation was overwhelming in a multitude of different ways.

“Fine! Wanna make breakfast with us, I found a magic blue egg!” Max asked, holding up an egg obviously colored with marker.

I shrugged my shoulders, “Bro, leave me alone, can’t you read the room?” I started in between bites as I walked to the fridge.

“Eeeeeer! Why’d you come live here if you’re just gonna be mean?!” Max pouted, stomping his foot.

“So I can eat all your food, duh,” I teased while digging around the fridge with a mouth full of muffin.

“Come on, please!” he begged, running behind me and tugging the back of my hoodie.

These people, to me; are strangers. My body snapped around and I yanked him up by the collar of his shirt, “Touch me again and I’ll throw you out a window,” I barked as my mother waddled up to us.

“Oh, sweetheart, put him down. He’s just excited to see you! You know how puppies are,” Susan blabbered pulling Max away from me as he and I growled at each other.

Everything about this situation made me uneasy.

“Let’s give Baylee a little space, ok Maxi? Plus, we still have a lot of unpacking to do,” Susan interrupted pulling him into a playful hug; my eyes looked up.

“Fine!” Max huffed with low ears.

I envy their closeness, it made me wonder why she asked me to come move with them. They’d seemed to have been happy without me all these years, I still couldn’t understand why they’d want me to live in a new house with them. I turned my head to follow the sound of the door bell ringing.

“Ooooh, bell! I’ll get it!” Max screamed flying past me.

A strong scent of vanilla and coconut crossed my nose; there’s only one person who smells like that.

“Max, don’t open the door!” I scolded, but it was already too late.
