(17) The days when people believed in gods
Even though it had become completely forgotten in every way from mankind's memory, consciousness, and sight, even, that there were indeed days when people believed in "gods," this fact resurfaced from the unconsciousness and led to the inexorable and complete recovery in all consciousness of this historical reality.
That we would've at all forgotten is unresolved to this day as to how it happened. The most unsolved revelation is that for a very long time, humans have believed in "gods."
These beings were always the creators of the universe, the earth, of life on earth.
They regulated every aspect of existence. They were invisible, so statues and countless other representations and symbols existed to personify them.
There would have been an extremely large amount of them, from the very beginnings to when, inexplicably, all memory and vestiges ceased to exist for a while. Their names and functions, origins, and deeds vary greatly.
Some appear minor and to have been known by a few, and others major, revered by millions.
Although "gods" were constantly overthrown and replaced, sometimes it depended on your might here on earth. Some extinct deities remained widely famous, so they kept reappearing under different incarnations. Thus were the planets named after them.
These beings were supposed to be almighty, at least to humans.
They ruled either alone or with others. When it was the case, bitter, murderous feuds resulted. Many were at complete odds against one another and were embodiments of all aspects of life—the good as well as the horrible. The phrase attributed to Hermes Trismagistus in the Hermetic Corpus:
"As above, so below"-
echoes well this dual complimentary aspect, but from the "gods" themselves we inherit the flaws as well, instead of being the result of sin.
This famous phrase is also represented in the Rider-Waie tarot deck with the "magician" card.
From the documented wealth of their lives, it is frequently reported that they shared the same passions we do, like jealousy, revenge, treachery, pride, and pure evil. Each "god" had his limits and special abilities, though some were infinitely more powerful and considered as the rulers of the others.
Another striking aspect is that they would have constantly interfered with human life, either out of their own selfish needs or whims. This alone would have caused the death of millions on earth, oblivious to their fate or powerless and dying in tragedy, to become immortalized in song or in the stars.
Otherwise, they could directly reward and punish the actions of humans they ruled invisibly, usually by death or bounty. Many geographical features and physical phenomena on earth were considered to be caused directly by their attributes.
They were unpredictable. They could suddenly kill. Some are notorious for their jealousy and pride. These beings could fall in love with humans and adopt a guise to have intercourse with them, whether known to them or not, voluntarily or not.
Others were terrifying, bloodthirsty monsters who exacted human sacrifices. Many of them, as recorded, did.
Some were very benevolent but never prevented anything harmful from happening to humans , like death, illness, and domination. But when good things happened, it could be said it was him. There are reports from interventions, but they nevertheless constitute a weak minority.
Although they resided in heaven or somewhere deep in the earth, houses were built for them and their followers everywhere in the world. There was most of the time an entire cast of humans set apart for the job of serving in these homes for the "gods" and their followers.
They vary immensely in size and shape, as do the practices and ceremonies involved. Many involve brutal domination, slavery, mutilations and cruelty.
Some of these deities were a total embodiment of violence and death. Most of all, these beings were feared, in one way or another.
It was possible to offend and anger them. Although almighty to us, most had their weaknesses. Horrible deeds of torture, genocide, and constant war occurred between the different groups of followers.
They could inspire a whole nation with disdain and hate. Some of the worst deeds of all time had to do with the belief in them and the hatred between the groups. Some "gods" became outlawed. Sometimes humans have had that much power. Some were forced upon others.
For all that happens between people, they never seem to do anything really. They served more as inspiration under a banner. They eventually lost credibility, yet increasingly gained more fervour all the time because of what they stood for. The potential for mass control and wealth opportunity was always the motivation for imitating on earth the worship practiced by these beings. Many were thought to come back one day and kill everyone except their followers.
These "gods" had replaced one's relationship with the bare thread of the spirit, the real essence of spirituality, as modern industry replaced creative blacksmithing. There is a net decline observed coinciding with important scientific discoveries.
The "Gods" remained potent, in the minds especially. The strength of your faith. When politics died, society died and chaos followed, and an abrupt halt—sudden discontinuity. We are all now fully conformed. We all look alike. We feel wholly unrelated to this past. What happened to us? Who are they, these past peoples? Why did they believe in those "gods"? We do not have all those answers, but feel we're slowly getting somewhere.
It probably won't solve are problems. Those problems will make more sense when we accept them as the legacy of the "gods" their withdraw and subsequent management since then, of all the rulers and governments that most represent the standard and way of life enjoyed by the most corrupt. We are maintained into an interlocking countdown until we all meet our fate at "GötterDämmerung"
