Chapter 1

The streets were alive with the sound of sirens, gunfire, and the chaotic hum of a city on the edge of collapse. Ava’s heart raced in time with the rumble of the engine beneath her. The city they had fought to liberate was now slipping through their fingers like sand. The walls of Blackwater had fallen, but the world they had once known was crumbling, and in the aftermath, the only option left was to run.

She could barely catch her breath, the fear clawing at her insides, threatening to overwhelm her. The weight of what they had done, what they had lost, was suffocating. But there was no time to mourn, no time for regrets. Not yet. Not when their survival was still hanging in the balance.

Behind her, the familiar skyline of the city loomed, burning in the distance. The fires they had set had spread, devouring the structures of Blackwater’s empire, but that didn’t matter. What mattered was that Ava and Julian had become too dangerous, too valuable to be left alive. There were still enemies who would stop at nothing to make sure they never saw another day.

Ava’s grip tightened on the door handle of the getaway vehicle as it careened through the darkened streets. Julian was at the wheel, his jaw set in determination. His eyes, however, betrayed the concern he was trying to mask. He had always been the one to take charge, to lead them through the worst of it, but this time, even he was unsure of what came next.

“We can’t keep running like this,” Ava said, her voice a harsh whisper against the wind rushing through the cracks in the vehicle’s windows. “Where are we even going?”

Julian didn’t answer immediately. His gaze remained focused on the road ahead, scanning for threats in the dark. The tension in the car was thick, but there was no room for fear, not yet. They had a plan—or rather, they had the fragments of a plan. A plan that involved getting as far away from the city as possible.

“There’s a place,” he finally said, his voice grim. “A small island. I’ve made arrangements. We’ll lay low there until things settle down.”

Ava frowned, the word “island” striking her as absurd in this moment. “An island?” she repeated, her disbelief clear. “That’s your plan? We’re just going to disappear?”

Julian glanced at her then, his lips pressing into a thin line. “What else can we do? If we stay here, they’ll come for us. The ones we left behind won’t be the only ones hunting us down.”

Ava’s heart sank. She knew he was right. They couldn’t stay. Not in the city. Not with everything they’d done.

As if on cue, the roar of an engine echoed behind them, growing louder by the second. Ava’s pulse quickened.

“Shit,” Julian muttered, his grip tightening on the steering wheel. “They found us.”

Ava’s breath caught in her throat. The city was a labyrinth of dark alleys, narrow streets, and hidden corners, but even here, with the night pressing in around them, there was nowhere to hide. Not from the people who wanted them dead. Not from the people they had betrayed.

The car swerved, dodging an incoming barrage of gunfire that narrowly missed them. Julian slammed the pedal to the floor, pushing the vehicle faster, weaving in and out of traffic, trying to shake off their pursuers. The sound of engines revving and tires screeching was deafening, but Ava couldn’t afford to let her fear take over.

The vehicle lurched over a pothole, sending her crashing against the seatbelt, but she didn’t flinch. Not yet. They weren’t out of danger. Not by a long shot.

“We need to lose them,” she said, her voice sharp, her mind racing with plans she didn’t have time to finalize.

“I know,” Julian said, eyes flicking to the rearview mirror. “Hold on.”

Another round of gunfire sprayed across the road, this time taking out a streetlamp in the distance. The headlights from their pursuers cast long, distorted shadows on the asphalt. Ava gripped the seat as they tore through the city, the looming shadows of danger closing in.

Finally, Julian veered sharply down a narrow alley, too tight for the other vehicle to follow. They cut through the maze of backstreets, weaving between abandoned buildings, the sound of their engine echoing off the walls.

Ava’s breath was coming in short, fast bursts, her mind still in overdrive, heart thudding against her ribcage. They had no time to waste. They needed to get out of the city. But where?

And what would happen when they finally reached the island?

The adrenaline was wearing off as the night dragged on. Finally, they reached the docks—an old, forgotten pier that still held a boat Julian had secured for their escape. There, under the shadow of the mountains, they boarded the vessel and began their journey toward the island. The city slowly faded from view, its chaotic lights blinking in the distance. Ava felt a strange mixture of relief and dread as the shore disappeared behind them, the last of the city’s noise swallowed by the dark waters.

Julian steered the boat into the calm, open sea, and for the first time in what felt like forever, they could breathe. The uncertainty of the future lay ahead of them, but for now, they were free.

As the first light of dawn began to break over the horizon, Ava looked out at the vast, empty expanse of the ocean. She didn’t know what awaited them on the island—what kind of life they could build there, how long it would take for them to heal—but she knew one thing for sure.

They were starting over. And nothing would ever be the same again.
