Chapter 1

The Night Everything Burns

The first thing that I remember is the smell.

It was not merely smoke; it was thick, bitter, and suffocating. It clawed its way into my lungs until every breath I took felt as if it were on fire.

Then came the sound.

A cacophony of screams, howls, and snarls so violent that the entire forest seemed to tremble beneath their weight.

My bare feet pounded against the dirt path as I ran, carefully avoiding tree roots and fallen branches. The moon hung high above, swollen and crimson—the Blood Moon. Its light cast everything in shades of red, as if the night itself had been soaked in blood.

Behind me, chaos raged with a fury that seemed unstoppable. Warriors from my pack transformed into their wolf forms mid-stride, their claws slashing, their teeth snapping with lethal precision. The air was alive with the scent of blood and wet fur.

“Aria!”

I spun around at the sound of my mother’s voice. She was racing toward me, her long hair streaming behind her, her eyes wide with desperation. In the flickering light of the fire, I could see the gash across her arm. Blood dripped onto the ground with every step she took.

“Run!” she shouted, her voice cracking with urgency. “Run and do not look back!”

I hesitated for a single heartbeat. My instincts screamed at me to stay, to fight, to protect my family. But then I saw him.

He stepped through the flames like they were nothing—tall, broad-shouldered, dressed entirely in black. His eyes were the coldest shade of grey I had ever seen, sharp and merciless. Even from a distance, his presence hit me like a heavy blow to the chest.

Alpha Kael.

Everyone in our pack knew his name. He was the leader of the Shadow Moon Pack, a ruthless conqueror, the kind of Alpha our mothers warned us about at bedtime. He was the wolf no one dared to cross, the predator capable of ending lives with a single command.

And now, he was here.

For one impossible second, our eyes met.

That is when it happened.

A stabbing pain tore through my chest, so sudden and sharp that I gasped aloud. It was not merely pain; it was heat, a rush of molten fire that curled around my ribs and settled deep inside my bones. My wolf whimpered in recognition.

Mate.

The word hit me harder than any flame ever could.

No, this could not be happening. Fate had a cruel sense of humor, but it would not do this to me.

Kael’s gaze did not waver. In that moment, the battle seemed to fade away—the shouts, the howls, the clash of steel and claws—until it was just the two of us, standing frozen across the distance as if caught in a trap neither of us could escape.

“Aria!” My mother’s voice shattered the moment. She shoved me hard toward the trees. “Go!”

I ran.

Branches tore at my skin as I plunged into the forest, my heart pounding in my chest like a drum. I could still feel Kael’s eyes on me, still feel the pull of the mate bond like an invisible rope wrapped tightly around my heart, growing stronger with every step I took.

I did not stop running until I reached the ridge above the camp. From there, I could see everything—the flames consuming our homes, the bodies strewn across the ground, the blood pooling in the dirt. Wolves I had grown up with, friends I had trained beside, were being cut down like grass before the scythe.

And in the center of it all, Kael moved like death incarnate, his blade flashing, his wolf tearing through anyone foolish enough to stand in his path.

I wanted to hate him. I wanted to wish him dead.

But the bond—the bond pulsed inside me, hot and unrelenting, a cruel reminder that the Moon Goddess had bound me to my worst enemy.

Then I saw my father.

He was on his knees, sword shattered and useless, blood soaking his shirt. Kael stood over him.

“No!” The scream tore itself from my throat before I could stop it. I scrambled down the ridge, my feet slipping on the loose soil. I did not care that I was unarmed and unprepared. My father needed me.

I was halfway there when it happened.

Kael’s blade came down—and my father fell.

The world blurred around me. My legs buckled beneath me, but the mate bond surged anew, twisting inside my chest in a way that made my stomach churn. I felt Kael’s gaze find me even before I looked up.

He took a step forward, expression unreadable. Then he said one word—one word that sealed my fate.

“Take her.”

Two of his warriors shifted back to human form and moved toward me. I ran, but they were faster and stronger. One grabbed my arm, the other my waist, lifting me off the ground as though I weighed nothing. I kicked, screamed, and bit, but it was useless.

I caught one last glimpse of my home—of the flames, the bodies, and the Blood Moon hanging heavy in the sky—before the forest swallowed us again.

The ride was silent. I did not know where they were taking me, only that Kael’s scent surrounded me completely. Even without seeing him, I could feel him; the bond was a constant hum in my chest.

By the time we reached the Shadow Moon territory, the sun was beginning to rise. Their land was… different. Larger, wilder. Wolves patrolled in perfect formation, their eyes tracking me with cold curiosity.

They dragged me toward a massive stone fortress that rose from the earth like it had been carved from the mountain itself. The walls were high, and the gates were reinforced with iron. Inside, everything was ordered—too ordered, as if every breath taken here was measured and controlled.

Kael waited at the top of the steps.

He looked at me as though I were something he had already claimed.

My wolf stirred, drawn to him despite everything.

I wanted to spit in his face.
