I Shouldn't Have Turned 34

Summary

I was in the bathroom, getting ready for my birthday party. I was singing Madonna (my idol) to take my mind off the fact that I was celebrating my 34th birthday with my friends at a karaoke bar/restaurant. Sounds cool, right? Well, not to me. All my friends are married, have children, and... I’m really happy for them. I mean it. It’s not the same anymore. And I’m telling you this because I made a huge mistake at my birthday party, a mistake that’s worth telling.

Introduction

[Music Mix Madonna playing]

Get into the groove, boy you’ve got to prove, your love to meeeee yeaaah.

Get up on your feet, yeah step to the beat, boy what will it beeeee

I was late (as usual, my friends are used to it). Everyone was already at the restaurant.

Amy, my best friend since fourth grade. She is now married to a boring man who never stops talking about his job.

Paul, a friend from college. Very nice, unlike his wife who left him. He now takes care of his two daughters, Jade and Luna, on his own.

Lysi, my coworker at Target, where I work. She is very romantic and sensitive, just like her fiancée.

The room was quite dark, lit by various neon lights of different colors. Everything was fine. Well, Amy and her husband had just had an argument. Paul’s daughters were very noisy (he hadn’t found a babysitter) and Lysi decided to talk about the stress that my life and I were causing us because, and I quote, “you seem unable to settle down.” Me? Unable to settle down? Well, that’s a great way to start a birthday party.

I should have gone home earlier. Even though I tried to get into the mood, I couldn’t enjoy having my friends around me.

What the hell was I thinking when I threw a glass of wine at Amy, made Paul’s daughters cry, and almost punched Lysi’s girlfriend in the face?

I’m sure you think I’m a horrible friend, but I have good explanations.
