Part 1: The Burden & The Dream Chapter 1: The Weight of Expectations
The scent of stale coffee and simmering resentment was Roses alarm clock. Monday mornings in the Miller household felt heavier, a dense fog in the chaotic lineup of six siblings, eased out of her creaking bed, careful not to wake her younger half-brother, Beck, whose room she still vaguely shared for storage.
Downstairs, the familiar symphony of a dysfunctional family was already in full swing. Julian, the eldest at thirty, was likely already out, having perfected the art of strategic retreat. Bella twenty-eight, second oldest and Jade's most diligent lieutenant, was probably setting the table, her movements precise, almost brittle.
"Rose! Are you going to sleep all day? You'll be late for work!" Her mother, Jade's voice, sharp as a filleting knife, cut through the thin walls. Jade, a woman whose love felt perpetually conditional, ruled her domain with an iron will disguised as maternal concern. the local coffee shop where she'd worked for five years. Her reflection stared back: tired eyes, but also a stubborn set to her jaw. This wasn't her life, not permanently. In her mind's eye, she saw not the chipped paint of her childhood home, but the warm, sun-drenched porch of a small house in Georgia, Liam's strong arm around her, the scent of pine instead of stale coffee.
That dream, solid and shimmering, was her shield against the daily barrage.
