Episode 1: The Beginning

Wednesday, October 8th, 2025

A man is sitting in his apartment, at his desk. He’s a scientist, and he’s working on a project. He finishes, and turns it on, but then… Boom. There’s a flash of light, and the man is unconscious on the other side of the room. There’s a scorch mark on his desk, and his project is melted.

5 Hours Earlier

James is at work, in his lab. He works at LR Labs - Lightning Research Laboratories. He starts a project - a device that can generate pictures out of lightning. A few hours pass, and he’s halfway finished with the project. His shift ends, and he decides to finish it at home, so he does that. He gets home, and sets his project down on his desk, in front of the window. He opens the window for the cold air breeze, as his AC stopped working.

He finishes after a few more hours, and turns on the device. He didn’t notice that it started raining. As he turns the device on, a bolt of lightning strikes him through the window with a boom and a flash of light, melting the device, leaving a scorch mark on the desk, and blasting him across the room. He’s unconscious.

45 minutes Later

James wakes up in an ambulance truck. He sees a doctor inside, who looks startled from his sudden awakening.

“Wh-... What happened?” James asks.

“You were struck by lightning, Dr. Mathis,” The doctor, Dr. Marlen, responds.

“Lightning?”

“Yes, lightning. You’re lucky to be alive.”

“When?”

“About 45 minutes ago. You weren’t supposed to wake up until after a few hours.” Dr. Marlen checks the monitors. “All your vitals and scans are all good. You’re good to go, I guess. You’re lucky we haven’t left yet.”

“Oh… Okay.” He gets up, looking and feeling completely fine. “Thanks, I guess.”

He goes inside his house, and sees where the incident happened. There’s dust everywhere, even outlining where he hit the wall and ground.

“Well… Today is not my…” He sees his project melted, and looks annoyed. “Lucky… day.”

He spends the next few hours cleaning, and then sees that it’s late at night.

The next day, he checks the security cameras of the inside of his apartment, and sees the lightning hit him. He plays it in slow-mo. He watches as the lightning bolt hits his device first, melting it, and scorching his desk from the power. The lightning ricocheted off the device, and at his chest, blasting him back. He sees a small flicker of electricity on his body after he got hit in the security camera, and then the footage ends.

“Weird. Probably just an after-effect.” He then feels a shock in his wrist and forearm, and sees his veins slightly glow blue. “What the hell?” Suddenly, the entire apartment unit loses power, and then regains power, as his veins go back to normal.

James decides to keep what he just saw a secret, and wipes the footage of the lightning strike off the security cameras, but transfers the footage to his phone first.

He then goes to work, and starts his normal morning routine - he checks in to work at the bosses office, goes to his lab, and starts looking at strange lightning sightings nearby on his computer. But he sees something weird this time.

The earlier night, 4 lightning bolts came from the same cloud at the same time. All 4 were different colors. One was blue, another was red, another was white, and the last one was purple. They all went in different directions. The blue one went in the same direction as his apartment, and happened at the exact same time he was struck.

“Woah. Wait, what is that?” He looks closer at the image, and sees a beam pointed at the center of the cloud that the lightning was in. It’s bright yellow, and coming from a hotel room.

“This wasn’t natural… This was a controlled attack. By someone smart. I need to find the other 3 who were struck by the lightning, if anybody even was struck by the other 3 lightning bolts.”

So he starts searching. He finds the locations of where the other 3 lightning bolts struck, and goes to those 3 places.

He sees that the white lightning bolt struck a lab room in an abandoned storage unit, affecting a bunch of serums. He takes the serums to study, and then goes to the next location.

He sees that the red lightning bolt struck a rooftop of a hospital, where a teenager was sitting. It killed the teen. He takes a sample of the dead teenager’s blood, to study and see if it was affected.

Finally, he sees that the purple lightning bolt struck an abandoned warehouse that was being tested by another set of scientists from across the state. One of the scientists got hit, and the others ran away. He sees residue of the lightning hitting the scientist, meaning the scientist lived. He collects the residue to study, and takes it back to his lab.

He studies the 5 serums, and sees that they were serums used to regenerate human cells, to regrow limbs. But they were affected by the lightning, which is impossible to tell if it was in a negative way or positive way.

He studies the teenager’s blood, and sees that it’s surrounded in a red electrical shield, as a defence to protect the body. But what was supposed to protect him, killed him. He also runs a blood test and sees it was a 16 year old kid named Kyle Mullen.

Finally, he runs multiple tests on the residue of the last location, and sees it was an after-effect of being struck by lightning, similar to the residue in his apartment from when he was struck. He tests more, and finds a similarity in all 3 tests - There’s an unknown element, and it’s all the same element.

He then tests a sample of his own blood, and sees the exact same unknown element. He tests the element, but gets results saying that the element either doesn’t exist, or that there’s a malfunction in the testing. He brings it up to his boss, Dr. Dave Korlen, in his office.

“This is great work, James. And thanks for bringing this up. This is awfully concerning, and I will look into it,” Dr. Korlen says.

“Okay. And no problem, sir,” James replies.

“One more thing, before you leave.”

“Yeah?”

“Are you okay? I’d assume you would be out sick or something after that lightning struck.”

“Oh, yeah, I’m fine. Just a little… Different, if that makes sense.”

“Makes one-hundred percent sense, James. Completely understandable. You’re good to go now.”

“Thank you, Dr. Korlen. See ya later.” He leaves the office, and goes back to his lab. He contemplates what could’ve caused this, and then he remembers - the beam. He looks at the picture and sees it again, the bright yellow beam coming from a hotel room. “Gotcha.”

He goes to the hotel, and goes to what room he thinks the beam came from. It was from the 4th floor, on the east wall, all the way at the back of the hotel. He goes to the hotel room, and knocks on the door.

A man answers. He looks like he hasn’t slept in days, and roughly in his Mid-40s to Early-50s. But most importantly, he looks like a scientist - or someone smart.

“What do you want, kid?” The man asks.

“Do you happen to know of the strange thunderstorm last night?” James responds. The man looks panicked for a second, and then relaxes. James takes that as a sign to not look suspicious. He smirks, knowing he’s right.

“Yeah, I heard some loud booms. Saw a flash of a few different colors. Why?”

“Before I answer, can I take a look in your hotel room?”

“Why-” The man starts to ask, but then stops. He thinks, and then says, “Sure. I don’t see why not.”

James steps in, and looks around. He sees what looks like a laser pointer strapped to a computer-like device.

“What’s that you got over there?” James asks.

“Uh, that’s… It, uh… It’s a…” The man looks panicked and stressed, and then finds an explanation, calming down. “It’s a storm detector,” he lies… Only partially.

“Really? May I turn it on?”

“Um…” He gulps, determining whether or not to let James turn it on. He knows if he says no, it’ll be suspicious. But if he says yes, he’ll be exposed. Finally, he sighs. “Sure.”

“Wonderfull.” He turns the device on, and it points a bright yellow beam at the sky, exactly where the storm was. James sighs, and says, “Well… You have some explaining to do.”

“I- I don’t know what you-”

“Cut the “playing dumb” bullshit. Why did you direct-”

“Because I needed to!”

“Why?”

“He made me.”

“Who?”

“I’ve said too much. Leave.”

“Fine… But I’m onto you.” He hands the man a business card. “If you have to, call or text me with more info.”

The man hesitates, and then grabs the card. “Okay… I’ll think about it.”

“Good. And also…”

“Hm?”

“I need the device.”

“Uh, why?”

“It’s evidence. I need to confiscate it for research, and everyone’s safety.”

“Okay. I’m Henry, by the way.” James just nods.

James takes the device and he goes back to his lab. At his lab, he takes the device apart and he studies and researches every piece of tech. He finds that the tech is futuristic. He takes a sample of it, and compares it to modern tech. “This tech is decades ahead of our time… Who on God’s Earth made that Henry guy build this device?”

The Hotel

A man whooshes into Henry’s hotel room, with a purple flash of light and in a purple suit. His eyes are glowing black, with purple electricity in it.

“Where is the device?” He asks Henry, in a deep, and distorted voice.

“The scientist took it. James Mathis,” Henry replies, scared.

“Get it back! Now!”

“I- I can’t. He said-”

“Does it look like I care what he said?! Just get the device back! Or did you forget what I have for leverage?”

Henry glances at a picture of him and his family. “No… I didn’t forget. I’ll get the device back to you, ASAP. I swear.”

“Good. Never, and I mean never argue with me again. Do you understand?”

“Yes, sir. I understand.”

“Good.”

Apartment Complex

James is at his apartment, until suddenly, blue lightning crackles in his eyes. He sees blue lightning crackling on his hand, and a blast of blue lightning shoots from his hand at his alarm system, causing the entire floor of the apartment building to lose power. He falls to his back from the sudden shoot, the knockback of the blast, and the power of the knockback.

He looks at his hand, and says, “What the hell just happened?” He looks out the window, at the sky, knowing the lightning storm just changed him, and probably others, too.

Later That Night

James is sleeping in his bed. The Man in Purple whooshes at the foot of his bed with a flash of purple light. His eyes and voice are the same as with Henry.

“Nighty-Night, Mathis. Have sweet dreams,” He says. He then chuckles and whooshes away, in a flash of purple light, and a trail of purple lightning.SS
