Chapter 1
Cane's POV.
I throw my arm out in front of Elian, pushing him back as I stare at the things that seem to be around every fucking corner. They look like people... but they're not. I’ve watched them eat everything in this God‑forsaken town — people included.
We were on our way home from college when we wrecked. We crashed head‑on into a deer and totaled the car. The last time we spoke to our parents we told them we were on our way... but we never made it. I’m starting to think we never will.
“Come on, you little bastard,” I say, staring at the guy.
He takes a crooked step toward me. His eyes are dark and his body twists unnaturally as he comes into the house. I turn, grab Ellen’s hand — Emmanuel runs after us; he’s our other brother, but he’s adopted. We race out of the house, getting as far away as we can. I pull out the homemade detonator and press the button. The whole house explodes.
I learned that they can die — just like people — which makes me think they’re not zombies... at least not the kind on television. I’m in college, enrolled in an explosives and pyrotechnics program, so that training has come in handy when handling things that blow up.
“Huh — that was fuckin’ close!” Emmanuel says, looking at me. I sit up and watch the burning house.
“Agreed. But maybe if we kill as many as we can, we can get out of here,” I reply. “Besides — the rest of them seem very interested in fire.” The others start closing in on the house. I hope they fall into that shit. Except one — he’s watching, like he’s smart enough to wait and see what happens.
I watch as one gets too close and catches fire. The watcher brings his hands to his mouth, smiling as he watches the other burn to death. Fuckin’ freak.
I grab Elian’s hand and we run.
