Summary

Maddie only needs a place to stay - but moving in with a stranger comes with more than just shared rent. Derek has been living in the apartment for months, and at first, they interact rarely. But small moments began to add up over time; laughing over late-night takeout, stealing glances during TV marathons, the accidental brush of a hand, it all starts to feel impossible to ignore. As comfort and feeling of safety grows into something more, neither of them can tell where practicality ends and love begins… or whether they’re ready for the risk.

Chapter 1

I never thought of myself as someone who would willingly sign up to live in an apartment like this. Or with someone I don't even know.

I stepped out into the cool breeze of November. Taking a deep breath, I look up at the large apartment building.

How did I end up doing something like this.

I walk inside, going directly to the third floor without making eye contact with anyone.

C28.

I opened the door to my new apartment and looked around and realized it was a lot smaller than when I was here a week ago. Too late to back out now, I guess.

I begin to put some of the things I had brought into the main room, which looked to be a living room based off the furniture surrounding me.

I hear a grunt behind me, followed with a "hey".

I turn around to see Derek, my new roommate, who I had just met last week when I was looking for a place to live.

"Oh, hi." I say, unsure what else to say. Just being around him makes me nervous as hell, but I don't know why.

"Yeah, you can just put your stuff in that room over there, that one will be yours." He says with slight emotion in his voice. "uh, and its maddie, right?"

"Oh, yes, and your Derek?" I say with question in my voice even though I already know the answer. He nods at me slightly and turns his attention back to the TV.

I bring my stuff to my new room, and shut the door behind me. My room is fairly nice. It has two windows, and a decently sized closet, which is perfect since I don't have a lot of clothes like most girls my age.

I set a few pairs of my clothes into the closet, and a few miscellaneous everyday items around my room.

Thankfully, Derek already had extra furniture, so he allowed me to use it. Getting both a bed and a nightstand for free isn't something you just get everyday.

I put the last handful of things in their new places and take a deep breath. For the first time today, I felt somewhat secure, and curious to how it's going to be living with Derek.
