Prologue
The night had teeth.
Cold wind tore through the narrow streets of the city, carrying the scent of rain and something far older—something that did not belong in the human world.
Caelum Drayke stood motionless on the rooftop, his black coat whipping around him as storm clouds rolled across the moon.
Below him, the hospital emergency entrance glowed with harsh fluorescent light. Ambulances came and went, humans rushing in frantic motion, fighting desperately against the one thing they could never defeat.
Death.
For most of his thousand-year existence, Caelum had watched humanity from the shadows.
Protected them.
Guarded the fragile balance between life and death that his people had been created to preserve.
Now he barely felt anything at all.
The curse had been creeping through him for centuries.
Without a Heartbond—without the one soul meant to anchor his humanity—the emotions of the Aetheri slowly faded. What remained eventually became something monstrous.
The Hollowed.
Predators that no longer remembered mercy.
Caelum closed his eyes briefly, listening to the storm rolling over the city.
Inside his chest there was nothing.
No anger.
No sorrow.
No hope.
Only silence.
Below him, the glass doors of the emergency room burst open as a team of paramedics rushed inside with a gurney.
The injured man’s pulse was fading.
Caelum felt it instantly.
Aetheri were bound to the life force of the world itself. Every dying heartbeat echoed faintly in their senses.
But tonight something else followed that fading pulse.
A second rhythm.
Stronger.
Brighter.
Different.
Caelum’s eyes snapped open.
For the first time in centuries, something moved through his chest.
Not emotion.
Not yet.
But awareness.
His gaze shifted toward the hospital entrance.
And then he saw her.
She stepped through the emergency doors with the quiet confidence of someone who lived every day on the knife’s edge between life and death.
Dark hair pulled into a loose knot. Surgical scrubs beneath a white coat. Her expression calm even as chaos unfolded around her.
Dr. Mara Ellison.
Caelum didn’t know her name yet.
But the moment she touched the patient on the gurney—
The world changed.
Power surged through him like lightning striking ancient stone.
His heart—silent for centuries—lurched violently.
The sensation nearly brought him to his knees.
Caelum gripped the stone ledge of the rooftop, eyes blazing as the impossible realization slammed through him.
Heartbond.
The word echoed through his mind like a thunderclap.
Impossible.
For over two hundred years, no new Heartbonds had been found among the Aetheri.
Many believed they were gone forever.
Extinct.
Yet the power radiating from the woman below burned through his senses like a rising sun.
She didn’t know what she was.
Didn’t know what she meant to him.
But Caelum knew.
The bond had awakened.
And with it came something far more dangerous.
Emotion.
Possession.
Need.
His gaze darkened as Mara disappeared through the hospital doors.
“You found me,” he murmured softly into the wind.
Far below, lightning flashed across the sky.
For centuries the leader of the Aetheri had waited in silence while his race slowly withered.
Now everything had changed.
Because somewhere inside that hospital walked the one woman capable of saving him.
Or destroying them all.
And Caelum Drayke would burn the entire world before he allowed anyone to take her from him.
