Prologue

“Vannah, I can’t be with you anymore,” Asher told me with tears in his eyes. The bad boy of Amberly High was crying. He was a senior and I was a junior. We had been together since I was in seventh grade, and now he was choosing to break up with me. And it was right after I told him that I loved him.

“What, why?” I asked as my own tears began to fall. Asher wiped away his tears and put on a brave face.

“My parent’s don’t think you’re a good fit for me. And…. I agree with them.” The fire in my soul withered out and became no more as what he said finally registered.

“You promised,” I whispered.

“You promised to never break my heart.” I whimpered and Asher flinched at my pain.

“I know, I should’ve never made that promise.” I scowled and scraped my tears away.

“I’m so sorry, Vannah.” He whispered as his composure broke and more tears began to fall.

“You’re not allowed to call me that anymore.” I snapped before I turned on my heel and stalked away. When I got to my car, my body tilted forward as I tried to stop my pain filled scream from escaping. I could feel it coming, so, I jumped into my white Bronco and slammed the door shut before my grief filled wails could be heard.

After I managed to compose myself, I drove off to my best friend, Jennifer Owens house. When I arrived, I didn’t even bother fixing my face, I just slowly walked up to her front door and rang the bell.

It took a bit for someone to answer, but when they did, I immediately felt bad because Mrs. Owens had a cooking apron on.

“I’m sorry, Mrs. Owens. I forgot that you guys eat earlier than we do. Is she here? I need to speak with her.” Mrs. Owens frowned at my disheveled state and said,

“No my dear, she’s out on a date, would you like to come in and wait for her?” I shook my head before I sighed.

“No, just tell her, tell her that Asher broke up with me and I have to leave for a bit.” Real concern flashed across her face. Which was confusing. I thought she didn’t really care for me. She always seemed aloof when I came over.

“Did he say why he was ending things with you?” tears began to leak out again and my voice broke as I repeated what he told me. Anger flashed across her face and she told me,

“I’m sorry he did that to you, dear. I could’ve sworn that boy loved you. That you guys were ma-” her words trailed off as she looked behind me.

“Hello, my love. You’re back early from work. Is everything okay?” I turned around and saw a weary looking Mr Owens coming up from behind me.

“Yes, baby. Boss man sent me home early because I’ve been really tired of late and told me to go take a nap.” I lifted my hand up in greeting before I headed for my car.

“Thanks again Mrs. Owens. Tell Jenny that I love her. Please and thank you. Take care.” I called out before I climbed into my car and drove off.

I arrived home and saw that no one was there. Not even my eldest brother. Which was a little concerning but not at the same time because he was friends with my ex. I rolled my eyes through the tears and entered the silent house to pack my belongings. I left my phone and purse as I didn’t want to be tracked and dragged back home as I was still a minor. My dad was a network engineer and he worked with computers so if I were to buy something with my debit card, he could find me with a snap of his fingers. I did leave a goodbye letter though. Telling them everything and why I was leaving.

I finally left the house and put my bags in the side parts of my motorcycle before taking off.
