New Student
By the time the last bell rang, the sky had already begun to change.
Orange melted into red, streaks of fading sunlight stretching across the horizon like the day was slowly exhaling its last breath. The light coming through the windows was softer now—quieter.
“Alright, that’s all for today.”
The teacher closed his book, adjusting his bag as he added, almost as an afterthought,
“And as you all know, a new student will be joining from tomorrow. Be decent.”
A wave of murmurs spread instantly.
Of course.
People never get tired of something new.
Chairs scraped, bags zipped, voices rose. The classroom slowly began to empty, like a tide pulling back.
I stood up, slipping my backpack over my shoulder.
Alex was already at the back, stuffing his books carelessly into his bag like he always does.
“Done,” he said, slinging it over his shoulder before turning to Ren. “Let’s go.”
We walked out together, our footsteps echoing through the long hallway. The evening light reflected faintly on the glass windows, stretching our shadows along the floor.
Ren broke the silence first.
“What kind of guy do you think he’ll be?”
Alex scoffed. “Obviously rich. No one just joins in second year like that.”
“Yeah,” I added without thinking, “probably the type with attitude.”
Ren grinned. “And girls are gonna go crazy over him.”
“Of course they will,” Alex muttered.
I didn’t say anything after that.
I agreed.
But…
Something felt off.
I couldn’t explain it.
It wasn’t curiosity. It wasn’t excitement either.
Just—
Something strange.
Like a thought I couldn’t catch.
Like a feeling that didn’t belong to me.
We reached the college gate.
Alex waved lazily. “I’m heading this way. See you losers tomorrow.”
“Yeah, go,” Ren shot back.
I watched him cross the road before turning to Ren.
“I’m taking the bus,” he said. “Cedar Street. You coming?”
I checked the time on my phone.
Extra classes.
“…No. I’ve got class in a few minutes.”
Ren raised a brow. “Of course you do.”
I ignored that.
“See you tomorrow.”
“Yeah, yeah. Don’t overstudy and die.”
I almost smiled.
“Bye.”
We went our separate ways.
The walk to the coaching center was familiar.
Same roads. Same turns. Same silence.
Through the narrow lane, past Upper Street, then across Charles Street.
Everything the same.
Except—
My mind wasn’t.
I sat on the usual bench, opening my notebook as the teacher began explaining something about formulas I normally wouldn’t struggle with.
My pen moved.
But my thoughts didn’t follow.
They stayed stuck.
On something stupid.
A new student.
I frowned slightly, staring at the page.
Why was I even thinking about it?
I’ve never cared before.
People come. People go.
It’s nothing new.
…So why does it feel like it is?
My grip tightened around the pen.
There it was again.
That feeling.
Unfamiliar.
Unsettling.
Like something was about to happen—
Something I wasn’t ready for.
I exhaled quietly, forcing my attention back to the page.
It’s nothing.
Just another person.
That’s all.
