Chapter 1: Human

Luna rested silently among the high branches of the forest canopy, her body swaying gently with the slow breath of the ancient woods around her. Beneath her lay her home, not built against the forest, but within it, as though the trees themselves had welcomed it into their embrace and shaped it from living bark, winding roots, and emerald vines. Soft lanterns of natural light glimmered faintly through the leaves below, hidden beneath the endless sea of green.

She was a forester among the Felines — one of the sacred people born of both feline grace and human spirit. Her ears twitched softly at every distant rustle, every whisper carried by the wind. The enchanted forest was not simply where they lived; it was who they were. Its pulse moved through their veins as naturally as blood itself. Above all, the forest answered to the ancient power watched over by Lotusa, whose connection to the old energies kept balance flowing through every living thing beneath the canopy.

Among the Felines, harmony was sacred. Every creature, every branch, every drifting petal existed as part of a single living consciousness. The ancient powers moved quietly through the roots of the earth and the hearts of the people alike, binding all life together in peaceful unity. The great ancient tree, revered beyond all else, stood at the centre of their traditions — timeless, vast, and wise. Each week the Felines gathered beneath its colossal limbs, offering fruits harvested by their own hands in gratitude for the life the forest continued to give them.

Nothing in the forest lived separately. The trees breathed with the flowers, the flowers listened to the rivers, and even the smallest glowing insects carried the rhythm of the ancient energy within them. Every leaf that fell and every blossom that opened belonged to the same endless cycle of life.

Luna had always held these traditions close to her heart. Like the others of her kind, she understood the importance of protecting their secluded world from outsiders who could not understand the sacred balance of the Feline community. Beyond the borders of the enchanted forest existed noise, greed, and disruption — forces capable of wounding the fragile harmony they had preserved for generations. So they remained hidden, untouched by the outside world, living only by the old ways.

Tonight, the forest was especially beautiful. As darkness settled over the canopy, streams of glowing particles awakened among the trees, drifting through the air like living stardust. Waves of colour shimmered across the forest — blues, violets, golds, and emerald greens — flickering softly like silent fireworks blooming within the night. The lights danced along branches and flowed through the roots below, illuminating the woods with a dreamlike radiance.

Luna watched them quietly from her perch above the world. The cool night breeze brushed through her hair and fur as the glowing lights reflected gently within her eyes. Every worry that lingered within her mind seemed to dissolve into the peaceful hum of the forest. This place, high above her home and hidden among the ancient branches, had always been her sanctuary. Here, the forest sang its quiet song to her soul, soothing away the weight of the day until only serenity remained.

Luna could feel the weariness settling gently over her body at last. The calm rhythm of the forest had begun to lull her into sleep, and her eyelids slowly lowered like heavy wooden gates closing at the end of a peaceful day. Above her, the glowing particles continued drifting through the trees in endless rivers of colour, painting the night sky in soft waves of light.

For a moment, she simply sat there in silence, letting the serenity wrap around her like a blanket. A faint smile touched her lips as she looked out across the endless canopy one final time.

“Sleep tight,” she whispered softly to the forest.

The woods answered with their usual gentle hum — low, warm, and soothing — a sacred sound only the Felines truly understood. It rolled through the trees like a living lullaby, calming the mind and easing the spirit into rest. Every Feline had grown up with that sound. It was safety. It was home.

With graceful ease, Luna finally rose from her branch and began her descent through the towering trees. To anyone else it would have looked impossible, but to her it was effortless — less like climbing and more like dancing with the forest itself. Her feet barely made a sound as she twisted between branches, leapt across hanging vines, and allowed the ancient woods to guide her movements naturally.

Within moments she landed softly atop her home. The structure was woven seamlessly into the forest, formed from living trees whose trunks curved naturally around walls of intertwined vines and roots. Moss glowed faintly along the rooftop beneath the moonlight.

Luna crouched low and slipped through the circular opening in the roof — a hidden entrance she had crafted herself years ago for quiet nights exactly like this one. She dropped lightly onto the wooden floor below without making a sound.

Inside, the room was warm and dimly lit by softly glowing plants resting along the walls. Luna loosened the robe from around her shoulders and tossed it lazily onto the nearby chair. Her muscles relaxed as she finally allowed herself to think about sleep. The peaceful exhaustion of the night had settled deeply into her bones now.

She had only taken a few steps toward her bedroom when something stopped her cold.

Rustling.

Very faint.

Her ears twitched instantly.

At first it sounded distant — almost lost beneath the natural whispers of the forest — but there was something wrong about it. Uneven. Unfamiliar.

Luna froze.

The sound had not come from within the Feline community. It came from beyond the outer borders.

Her tiredness vanished immediately.

The sharp instincts of a Feline awakened within her at once, flooding through her body like lightning. Though the noise would have been impossible for ordinary ears to detect, her kind could hear movement from astonishing distances. Every muscle in her body tightened with alertness.

Without hesitation, she turned back, snatched up her robe, and slipped it over herself once more. She tied the rope tightly around her waist, securing it firmly as her expression darkened with caution.

Then, in a single fluid movement, Luna climbed back through the opening in her roof and vanished once more into the trees above.

She moved swiftly through the canopy, silent as drifting smoke, returning to the same high vantage point where she had rested earlier. The forest around her remained peaceful, yet now every branch felt tense beneath her touch.

Again came the sound.

Rustling.

Metal.

A faint clinking carried weakly through the night air.

Luna narrowed her eyes.

Then she saw it.

A dim lantern light flickering far below between the trees.

Her heart skipped.

Shock rushed through her body so suddenly that her claws instinctively tightened against the bark beneath her hands. Every sense sharpened at once as her body slipped instantly into defense mode.

Meters below her… was a human.

The lantern swayed softly in the stranger’s hand while pieces of metal hanging from their clothing gave off quiet jingles with every careful step. The figure moved cautiously near the sacred border surrounding the hidden Feline community.

Luna stared down in complete disbelief.

Humans never came this far.

Not here.

Not near the forest borders.

For a brief moment, even her breathing stopped. The stories of outsiders, of danger beyond the woods, suddenly felt terrifyingly real standing beneath her.

Yet Luna remained perfectly hidden.

Being silent was second nature to the Felines. The forest concealed her completely as she crouched among the branches, her glowing eyes fixed upon the stranger below.

She watched every movement carefully, every step, every glance, studying the human with growing unease as the night stretched onward.

An entire hour passed with Luna never once looking away.

‘What are you doing here, human?’ she thought silently, her gaze locked onto the figure wandering far too close to a world they were never meant to find.

As Luna remained hidden within the shadows of the canopy, her sharp eyes followed every movement the human made below. At first, she believed the stranger was merely wandering too close to the borders by accident. But then she noticed something that made a cold wave of awareness spread through her entire body.

The human was writing.

Small pieces of parchment appeared beneath the lantern light as the stranger paused beside trees, rocks, and markings near the outer borders of the community. A metal instrument scratched quietly across the pages before disappearing again into a satchel at the human’s side.

Luna’s ears lowered slightly.

Notes.

The human was making notes about the forest.

A deep feeling of unease began tightening within her chest. Her mind raced with questions she could not answer. What exactly was the human recording? Had they discovered something? Were they searching for the Felines? Had someone sent them here intentionally?

Every instinct inside her screamed for immediate action.

Her muscles tensed against the branch as visions flashed through her thoughts of leaping down from the trees without warning — swift, silent, and merciless. She could end the threat within seconds before the human ever understood what had happened. One strike. One mistake corrected forever.

But she forced herself to remain still.

The laws of the Felines were absolute.

Any unusual presence near the sacred borders had to be reported directly to Lotusa. No matter how dangerous the situation felt, no Feline was permitted to act recklessly where the safety of the entire community was concerned.

Luna inhaled slowly, trying to steady the storm building inside her.

Part of her wondered if Lotusa already knew. The ancient powers flowed through him more strongly than anyone else within the forest. Many believed the woods themselves whispered secrets into his spirit. If a human had truly crossed near their borders, perhaps the forest had already made him aware.

Still… it was her duty to report what she had seen.

So she waited.

Hour after hour, Luna watched from the shadows as the human continued moving cautiously along the outer edges of the enchanted woods. The night slowly faded around them, and the once vibrant lights within the forest began softening beneath the approach of dawn. Exhaustion weighed heavily on Luna now, yet she refused to look away even once.

Because of the human, she had lost the entire night to vigilance.

At last, during the earliest hours of morning, the stranger finally turned away from the border and disappeared back into the distant wilderness beyond the trees.

Luna did not hesitate.

The moment the human vanished from sight, she launched herself through the canopy with explosive speed. Branches blurred around her as she raced through the forest like an arrow released from a bow. Her heart pounded violently inside her chest, driven equally by fear and urgency.

She moved through the trees like a bird soaring through the wind, each leap precise and effortless despite the panic surging within her. The ancient forest rushed past in streaks of green and gold beneath the dim light of dawn.

Eventually, the palace came into view.

It stood proudly at the heart of the enchanted forest — vast towers of living wood intertwined with glowing vines and ancient stone shaped by the forest itself. The palace seemed less constructed and more grown from the earth by the ancient powers that protected the Felines.

Luna dropped swiftly from the trees into the main gardens below. Dew shimmered across the grass while streams of glowing energy drifted lazily through flowerbeds surrounding the entrance. Two massive towers stood guard over the palace gates like silent guardians watching over sacred ground.

The instant Luna approached, movement stirred within the towers.

Two Feline guards stepped forward, both clad in polished armour woven with markings of the ancient tree. Their sharp eyes locked onto her immediately as they raised their palms to halt her advance.

“Hold there, missy,” one of the male guards said firmly. “You know no one sees Lotusa without reason.”

Luna barely caught her breath.

“Please — I must tell him!” she blurted out urgently, the words tumbling from her mouth in panic. “I saw a human at the border of the community!”

She pointed back toward the distant forest behind her, her chest rising rapidly with every breath.

The two guards exchanged a glance before looking back at her with visible disbelief.

“Please,” the female guard said calmly, almost dismissively, “no human has been seen near our home for centuries. Now go home.”

Luna stared at them in shock.

How could they not understand the seriousness of this?

Panic tightened around her again as she stepped forward desperately.

“Please, you know as well as I do that any unusual activity must be reported immediately!” Luna insisted, her voice trembling with urgency. “Please let me see him!”

But the guards were already losing patience.

Neither of them truly believed her. To them, her story sounded like exhaustion mixed with imagination after a sleepless night. Humans were legends now — distant fears buried deep within old stories.

Yet Luna knew what she had seen.

The lantern.

The notes.

The human standing near their borders.

It had all been real.

The guards finally moved forward and began forcing her away from the palace entrance despite her protests. Luna resisted at first, frustration and fear burning within her chest, but the two armoured Felines firmly escorted her back across the gardens toward the gates.

“Please!” Luna cried again as they pushed her beyond the entrance. “Believe me!”

But the heavy gates closed before her words could reach anyone else inside.

And suddenly, standing alone outside the palace gardens beneath the pale morning light, Luna felt something far worse than fear.

She felt the dreadful awareness that danger had entered their world… and nobody was listening.

Panic suddenly surged through Luna like wildfire.

She could not leave. She could not simply walk away and pretend everything was fine while a human wandered near the sacred borders of their hidden world. The thought alone made her chest tighten painfully.

This was too important to be ignored.

Too dangerous to be dismissed.

The moment that realization struck her fully, Luna spun around and sprinted back toward the palace gates without another thought.

The guards immediately noticed.

“Hey!” one of them shouted in alarm.

But Luna was already moving.

Her bare feet struck the stone pathways with desperate speed as she raced across the gardens, her heart hammering violently against her ribs. Fear and urgency blurred together inside her mind until she could barely think straight anymore. All she knew was that Lotusa had to hear her.

The guards lunged after her at once.

“Oi! Stop! NOW!” they shouted.

Luna ignored every word.

As the guards closed in behind her, she leapt upward toward the towering entrance gate with astonishing agility. Her claws and feet caught the woven wood and stone effortlessly as she climbed rapidly like a wild creature fleeing a storm. The guards reached for her but missed by inches.

Within seconds she vaulted over the top of the gate and landed hard on the other side before breaking into another frantic sprint toward the palace entrance.

“Stop her!” someone yelled behind her.

But Luna kept running.

The massive palace doors stood ahead, glowing softly beneath the early morning light. She burst through them without permission, without ceremony, without even slowing down.

The moment she entered the palace halls, chaos erupted.

Her footsteps echoed wildly through the enormous corridors as guards shouted in confusion from every direction. Luna darted between pillars, vaulted around corners, and slipped through open archways with desperate speed while armoured Felines chased after her through the palace.

“Luna!”

“Stop immediately!”

“What is wrong with her?!”

But she barely heard them anymore.

“LOTUSA!” she screamed at the top of her lungs, her voice echoing violently against the towering walls. “LOTUSA!”

To everyone inside the palace, she must have looked completely mad.

Servants froze where they stood. Guards rushed from side corridors. Palace officials stepped back in alarm as Luna stormed through the sacred halls with terror written across her face.

The entire palace could hear her now.

Her breathing had become ragged. Her thoughts spiralled faster and faster with every second. Images of the human below the forest canopy kept flashing through her mind — the lantern, the notes, the border.

Nobody understood.

Nobody was listening.

Then suddenly —

There he was.

At the far end of one of the great hallways stood Lotusa himself.

He had been gazing silently through the open arches overlooking the city below, calm and still like the forest itself. Soft morning light poured around him while the ancient energy drifting through the palace seemed to bend gently in his presence.

The instant Luna saw him, relief and desperation crashed through her all at once.

“LOTUSA!” she screamed again.

But before she could reach him, one of the pursuing guards finally caught hold of her ankle from behind.

Luna cried out as her body was violently yanked backward. She crashed onto the smooth palace floor and tumbled hard across the stone, rolling painfully before coming to a stop.

The hallway fell silent for a split second.

Lotusa turned immediately at the sound.

His eyes landed on Luna sprawled across the floor — panicked, breathless, and visibly shaking with stress. Her fur and hair were dishevelled from running, and her eyes carried the wild fear of someone desperately trying to warn others of approaching disaster.

For a brief moment, concern crossed Lotusa’s face as he stepped forward.

But the guards beside him instinctively moved to block his path.

Meanwhile, the other guards reached Luna quickly, grabbing her by the arms and hauling her roughly back onto her feet despite her struggling.

“Sorry, sir,” one of the entrance guards said between heavy breaths, clearly exhausted from the chase. “She broke into the palace. She will be punished.”

Thick restraints formed from enchanted forest vines were quickly wrapped around Luna’s wrists, tightening like living chains as the guards restrained her.

“No! Listen to me!” Luna shouted desperately as they tried dragging her away. “Please, Lotusa, you have to hear me!”

But then—

“WAIT!”

Lotusa’s voice thundered through the hallway.

The command struck the palace like a crack of lightning.

Every guard froze instantly.

Silence swallowed the corridor.

By now nearly a dozen guards surrounded Luna, holding her tightly as she struggled against the living restraints. Yet all movement stopped the moment Lotusa spoke.

Slowly, the guards turned toward him.

Lotusa stepped forward now, and there was unmistakable anger in his expression. Not wild rage — but deep displeasure, sharp and commanding enough to make the entire hallway tense. The ancient energy flowing through the palace itself seemed to stir with him.

His eyes locked firmly onto the guards restraining Luna.

“Let her go,” he ordered.

The guards hesitated nervously.

Lotusa’s voice rose louder, firmer, carrying the full authority of the ancient powers behind it.

“NOW!”

The hallway fell deathly still.

The guards immediately released Luna.

The enchanted vine restraints loosened from around her wrists and fell away lifelessly as she collapsed onto the floor beneath them in exhausted relief. Her entire body trembled from the panic, the chase, and the crushing fear of not being heard. For a few moments she could barely steady her breathing.

“Lotusa… sir… please listen to me… please…” Luna pleaded desperately, her voice shaking as she clasped her hands together tightly in front of him. Even freed from the restraints, she still looked as though she expected someone to silence her again at any moment.

Lotusa’s expression softened slightly when he looked down at her.

Without another word, he knelt before her and gently took hold of her trembling hands. The remnants of the living restraints still clung faintly around her wrists, and with calm care he untangled the enchanted vines himself.

“It’s alright, my child,” Lotusa said quietly. “You are safe here.”

His voice carried a calmness unlike anything else in the palace. It settled over the hallway like warm rain after a storm, soothing some of the panic clawing at Luna’s chest.

Around them, the guards stood rigid and silent. None dared move.

Lotusa glanced briefly back toward Luna as he finished removing the restraints completely.

“Just breathe,” he told her gently. “Give yourself a moment.”

Then he rose to his full height.

And the warmth vanished from his face.

The atmosphere in the hallway changed instantly.

Lotusa slowly turned toward the gathered guards, and a deep displeasure settled across his features. The ancient energy flowing through the palace walls seemed to respond with him, the glowing vines along the pillars dimming slightly as tension filled the air. Even the silence itself suddenly felt heavier.

“Get out of my sight,” Lotusa said coldly.

The words struck harder than a shout.

“All of you.”

The guards immediately lowered their heads and began retreating from the hallway without hesitation. None dared question him. None dared speak. Every one of them understood from the sharpness in his voice that his anger was very real.

But just before the two entrance guards could escape with the others—

“Not you two.”

Lotusa pointed directly at them.

The pair froze instantly.

Slowly, they turned back toward him, their nervousness obvious now. Their ears lowered, their posture stiffening under his gaze.

Lotusa stared at them in complete silence for a moment, disappointment visible in his eyes.

Then he spoke.

“What,” he asked sharply, “is the meaning of this?”

The two guards visibly struggled beneath the weight of his presence. Their earlier confidence had completely disappeared now. One of them swallowed nervously before finally speaking.

“Sir… she… she tried to break into the palace…” the guard muttered shakily.

Lotusa’s expression darkened further.

He took a slow step forward, and the very air around him seemed to shift in agreement with his displeasure. The glowing walls of the palace pulsed faintly, reacting to the ancient powers flowing through him.

“And why,” Lotusa asked with dangerous calmness, “was that?”

Behind him, Luna remained seated on the floor, still trying to steady her breathing as exhaustion and adrenaline drained through her body.

One of the guards attempted to answer.

“Sir, she said that a hu—”

“Because she saw a human.”

Lotusa interrupted him instantly.

The guards fell silent.

Shock crossed their faces.

Lotusa already knew.

Of course he knew.

His eyes narrowed slightly as he looked at them, disappointment now mixed with unmistakable anger.

“Guards,” Lotusa called firmly.

Several nearby palace guards stepped forward immediately.

“Take them away.”

The two entrance guards stared at him in disbelief.

“I have no time for Felines who ignore the laws of this community,” Lotusa said sternly. “Nor for those who allow arrogance to blind their judgment.”

The hallway seemed to grow colder around his words.

“Replace them at the entrance. Now.”

The two guards immediately panicked as the others seized them by the arms.

“Sir, please!”

“We were only trying to protect the palace!”

“Please forgive us!”

But Lotusa did not even look at them again.

The guards were dragged away pleading desperately as their voices echoed further and further down the corridor until silence finally returned once more.

Only then did Lotusa turn back toward Luna.

The displeasure faded from his face the moment his eyes met hers again.

“Please,” he said gently, extending a hand toward her, “stand now. I apologise for my people.”

Luna looked stunned for a moment before carefully accepting his hand. Lotusa helped her to her feet with quiet patience.

“Sir… Lotusa…” Luna said quickly, still overwhelmed. “I saw a human at the border, so I came here. They wouldn’t listen to me. I’m sorry for breaking in… please forgive me.”

The moment she finished speaking, Luna bowed deeply before him out of respect.

Lotusa immediately shook his head.

“Luna,” he said softly, “there is nothing wrong with what you did here.”

His voice carried certainty now.

“I already know about the human. And you did exactly what the laws of our community demand. You acted correctly.”

Luna slowly looked up at him, surprised by the reassurance in his tone.

“The safety of our people depends on awareness,” Lotusa continued calmly. “You chose duty over fear of punishment. That is not something to apologise for.”

Then Lotusa turned slightly toward several nearby female servants who had silently gathered in the hallway during the commotion. Their elegant dresses flowed like woven leaves and silk, moving almost as naturally as the forest itself.

“Prepare a room for her,” Lotusa instructed gently. “She needs rest.”

The servants bowed immediately and hurried away to obey.

Meanwhile Luna stood there still trying to process everything — the human, the guards, Lotusa already knowing — while the ancient palace hummed softly around them like the forest itself had finally begun listening.
