Chapter 1- Long Drive
Rain slammed against the windshield as Evelyn Hart drove deeper into the countryside.
The city disappeared nearly an hour ago.
Now there was only darkness and endless pine trees stretching along both sides of the narrow road like towering black walls.
Her GPS lost signal twenty minutes earlier.
No houses.
No stores.
No headlights.
Just forest.
Evelyn adjusted her grip on the steering wheel while thunder rolled across the sky.
Something about this place felt wrong.
Not dangerous exactly.
Just… isolated.
Too isolated.
Her military instincts had never fully left her after discharge. Even now, four years later, she still automatically scanned roads, exits, reflections, and shadows without thinking.
Hypervigilance.
Her therapist called it trauma.
Evelyn called it survival.
Her phone lit up in the cupholder beside her.
Daniel:Storm’s bad out there. You close?
Despite herself, she smiled faintly.
Daniel Mercer.
For months he’d become part of her nightly routine.
Late-night phone calls.
Video chats until sunrise.
Long conversations about things she never discussed with anyone else.
The military.
The insomnia.
The nightmares she pretended didn’t exist.
Daniel listened quietly to all of it.
He never treated her like she was broken.
That was rare.
Most people saw the blonde hair, blue eyes, and soft face first.
Then eventually noticed:
the scars on her knuckles,
the way loud noises made her tense,
the way she constantly watched everything around her.
Then came the questions.
Did you kill anyone?
What happened overseas?
Daniel never asked.
He just listened.
And somehow that made her trust him.
Another flash of lightning lit the road ahead.
Evelyn suddenly stiffened.
A figure stood near the woods.
Her foot slammed the brakes instinctively.
The tires skidded hard across wet pavement before the car jerked to a stop.
Heart pounding, Evelyn stared through the rain-covered windshield.
Nothing.
Only trees swaying violently in the storm.
She exhaled slowly.
“Jesus…”
Her nerves were getting worse lately.
Too many sleepless nights.
Too many memories she couldn’t shut off.
The road curved sharply ahead.
Then she saw it.
Massive black iron gates emerged through the rain.
Beyond them sat the Mercer estate.
Even in the storm, the mansion looked enormous.
Dark stone walls.
Towering windows.
Warm golden lights glowing inside.
Beautiful.
But cold.
Evelyn slowly pulled to a stop before the gates.
Something deep in her chest tightened.
A quiet instinct whispering:
Leave.
Go home.
Turn around.
Forget this.
Then her phone buzzed again.
Daniel:That’s me opening the gate :)
The iron gates slowly creaked apart.
Evelyn swallowed hard and drove through.
The driveway stretched endlessly through the woods before finally opening toward the estate itself.
Rainwater shimmered across black pavement while old statues lined the entrance path.
Most were damaged.
Broken angels.
Headless figures.
Cracked marble faces worn smooth with age.
Evelyn parked near the front steps.
Before she could even grab her bag, the mansion doors opened.
And there he was.
Daniel Mercer.
Tall.
Dark-haired.
Sharp jawline softened by an easy smile.
He looked exactly like he did during their video calls.
Expensive black coat.
Sleeves rolled slightly.
Relaxed posture.
Safe.
For the first time during the drive, Evelyn finally relaxed.
Daniel walked down the stairs toward her through the rain.
“There you are,” he said softly.
His voice sounded warmer in person.
Real.
Evelyn laughed nervously. “You live in the middle of nowhere.”
Daniel grinned.
“That’s part of the charm.”
He gently took her overnight bag before she could protest.
Then his eyes briefly moved across her face carefully.
Studying.
Noticing.
It lasted less than a second.
But Evelyn caught it.
“You okay?” he asked.
“Yeah,” she answered quickly. “Long drive.”
Daniel smiled warmly again.
“You made it.”
Something about the way he said those words made a chill crawl across her skin.
Not enough to alarm her.
Just enough to notice.
Thunder shook the sky overhead as Daniel led her toward the mansion doors.
Behind them, hidden high above the estate entrance, a small security camera silently followed Evelyn’s movements as she stepped inside.
And the front doors slowly locked behind her.
