Chapter 1: authors note
Author’s Note
Mercy in the Smoke is a story about broken people, imperfect choices, and a God who does not abandon us in the places we end up.
This book does not suggest that God causes harm, trauma, sin, or exploitation to accomplish His purposes. The characters in this story arrive where they are through human decisions, pain, survival, and circumstance. What this story seeks to explore instead is the truth that God meets people where they are, not where they “should have been.”
Redemption, in this story, does not come through perfection or religious performance. It comes quietly, through conviction without condemnation, through dignity restored, and through mercy that shows up in the aftermath rather than orchestrating the fall.
This work also reflects the realities of church hurt, trauma, and survival faced by many, particularly women navigating faith after betrayal. It is written with deep respect for those journeys.
Mercy in the Smoke is not about God sending anyone into darkness.
It is about light finding people already there.
This work is written as a poetic narrative with theatrical elements.
