The traitor they forgot

Summary

Twenty years ago, Lyara Voss lost everything. The man she loved. Her three sons. Her name. Her freedom. Accused of treason, she was exiled to the infamous prison world of Kharon IX while the Empire's celebrated war hero, Kaelen Dravik, believed the lie. Now war rages across the stars once more. The Empire demands soldiers, and Lyara is finally given a chance to leave her prison behind. But freedom is not mercy—it is a declaration of war. As fleets burn in the void, families are torn apart, and long-buried betrayals rise to the surface, Lyara returns with a single purpose: To prove the truth—and reclaim the man who betrayed her.

Prologue

The Hall of Justice on Aurelia Prime shone brighter than ever that morning.

The towers floating above the city gleamed with golden light beneath the first rays of the twin suns. Along the streets, soldiers in ceremonial uniforms stood in perfect formation. The central avenues had been sealed off, and thousands had gathered in the vast plaza before the palace to witness the verdict in one of the Empire’s most notorious treason trials.

For days, the official broadcasts had repeated the same story.

Lyara Voss, a former engineering officer of the Imperial military, had passed classified information to enemy forces.

The deaths of thousands of soldiers had been linked to her actions.

The crowd had already delivered its verdict long before the court ever did.

Inside the main courtroom, a cold sense of order prevailed.

The walls of the vast domed chamber were clad in white marble, adorned with the emblems of the Stellar Alliance and the crests of the ancient ruling houses. At the center of the hall, an elevated platform held the five-member judicial council. Before them, floating data screens, holographic evidence displays, and encrypted case files rotated silently through the air.

On the defendant’s platform stood twenty-five-year-old Lyara.

She wore a simple gray prison uniform. Magnetic restraints bound her wrists, and a tracking collar encircled her neck. Her hair had been cut short, and her face was pale, yet her posture remained straight and proud.

She did not look broken.

Though the shadows beneath her eyes bore witness to twenty sleepless nights.

The gallery was filled with military commanders, members of noble families, senators, and journalists.

In the front row sat Kaelen Dravik, one of the Empire’s rising generals.

Lyara’s husband.

He was thirty-eight years old then. Dressed in a flawless ceremonial uniform, he wore a row of medals that gleamed beneath the courtroom lights. His face was hard and expressionless, as if carved from stone itself.

Only his hands betrayed the turmoil within.

His fingers gripped the armrests of his seat so tightly that his knuckles had nearly turned white.

Beside him sat his parents, Lord Cassian Dravik and Lady Seraphine Dravik.

They watched the proceedings with disciplined, aristocratic composure, as though they were merely attending to an unfortunate family matter rather than witnessing the trial of their daughter-in-law.

A few rows behind them stood Selene Dravik, Kaelen’s younger sister and Lyara’s closest friend.

She was the Crown’s star witness.

The Chief Justice finally spoke.

“We have reached the final stage of these proceedings. Defendant Lyara Voss, do you wish to make a final statement before sentencing?”

The courtroom fell silent.

Lyara slowly lifted her head.

She did not look at the judges.

She searched for Kaelen.

And found his gaze.

“Yes,” she said quietly.

“I do.”

The Chief Justice gave a brief nod.

“You may proceed.”

Lyara drew a deep breath.

“I did not betray the Empire. I did not pass classified information to anyone. I did not collaborate with the enemy.” Her voice remained calm and steady. “Never.”

A murmur swept through the courtroom.

“The access codes used in the system breach were forged. The communication logs were altered. The evidence has been fabricated.”

The prosecutor responded with a mocking smile.

“That is what every guilty person claims.”

Lyara did not even look at him.

“Not every guilty person can name the individuals who accessed the servers that night.”

Several people in the gallery shifted in their seats.

The prosecutor immediately sprang to his feet.

“Objection! This is nothing more than a desperate attempt to distract the court!”

“I want to hear it,” the Chief Justice said.

Lyara continued.

“Three people besides myself had access to the Delta Network. With command-level override authority, two others could gain entry as well. Their names are missing from the system logs.”

Now even Kaelen leaned forward in his seat.

“Names?” the Chief Justice asked.

Lyara’s lips trembled slightly.

“If I speak those names aloud, I will be dead before the night is over.”

A stunned silence fell across the courtroom.

The Chief Justice’s expression hardened.

“Is that a threat?”

“No,” Lyara replied. “It is a fact.”

The prosecutor interrupted once again.

“Enough of this charade. The defendant is incapable of proving any of these claims.”

For the first time, Lyara turned her attention directly to Kaelen.

“Look at me.”

The general froze.

“Kaelen... look at me.”

Every eye in the courtroom shifted toward them.

Slowly, Kaelen raised his gaze to meet hers.

When Lyara spoke again, her voice was little more than a whisper.

“You have known me for twelve years. You know how I work. You know what I believe in. You know I would never hand over anything that could get soldiers killed.”

Kaelen’s jaw tightened.

“The evidence—”

“I wasn’t asking about the evidence.”

The general fell silent.

For the first time, tears glimmered in Lyara’s eyes.

“I asked whether you believe me.”

The chamber was silent.

For a long moment, Kaelen did not answer.

When he finally spoke, he did not look at his wife. His gaze remained fixed straight ahead.

“It is the court’s duty to judge.”

The color drained from Lyara’s face as if she had been struck.

She did not scream.

She did not break.

She simply nodded once, slowly, as though something inside her had died forever.

Selene stepped forward to testify.

She was dressed in black, perfectly playing the role of the grieving friend.

“I can confirm it,” she said in a clear, steady voice. “During the week before her arrest, Lyara repeatedly spoke about how tired she was of the military leadership. She said the system was rotten.”

“You’re lying,” Lyara said.

Selene turned to look at her.

Her eyes were cold.

“She also said that Kaelen loved his rank more than he loved his family.”

Kaelen’s head snapped up.

A laugh almost escaped Lyara—not from amusement, but from pain.

“And that makes me a traitor?”

The prosecutor closed his case file with a satisfied expression.

The Chief Justice rose to his feet.

“The Council has reached its decision.”

The entire courtroom seemed to hold its breath.

“Lyara Voss is hereby found guilty of treason against the Empire, unauthorized disclosure of military intelligence, and responsibility for wartime losses resulting from said actions.”

From outside, the muffled roar of the crowd seeped through the walls of the Hall of Justice.

“The court has taken into consideration the defendant’s previous service to the Empire and the fact that she is the mother of three minor children.”

The Chief Justice paused.

“Therefore, in place of the death penalty, this court sentences Lyara Voss to lifelong exile on the penal world of Kharon IX.”

The gavel came down.

Lyara never took her eyes off Kaelen.

“Tell the boys that I love them.”

For a moment, he rose from his seat as if he were about to say something.

As if he were about to stop this.

As if he were about to believe her.

But in the end, he remained silent.

The guards seized Lyara by the arms.

Selene turned her head away.

Lady Seraphine released a quiet breath of relief.

Cassian Dravik calmly folded his hands together, looking deeply satisfied with the outcome.

Lyara looked back one last time.

Not at the judges.

Not at the courtroom.

Not at the family that had condemned her.

She looked at the man who had once been her entire world.

Then they led her away.

And across Aurelia Prime, people celebrated the triumph of justice.
