No windows. No natural light. No visual reminder that there was a world outside the servers that existed independent of them.
The world outside, Cairo had explained to his architects, was the problem SOVEREIGN was built to solve. Why would you want to look at it?
They had laughed. They always laughed.
He was thirty-nine years old. He had been on the cover of Time four times. Cairo said nothing for a moment.
He had stopped walking.

"Tell Senator Okafor," he said, "that we appreciate her diligence and that thirty additional days of delay represents approximately 847,000 preventable deaths from conditions SOVEREIGN has already modeled solutions for." He paused. "Use nicer language. But make sure the number is in there."
"The number is-"
"Real. SOVEREIGN calculated it. Cancer mortality, antibiotic resistance, cardiac events. The model is solid."
A silence on the line.
"Is there anything else?" he asked.
"The journalist. From the Chronicle. She’s asking again about the leaked-"
"Which journalist."
"Sione Tuilagi."
"Tell her we don’t comment on stolen documents." Cairo began walking again, slowly, hands still clasped. "Tell her we look forward to speaking with her after the launch, when SOVEREIGN's actual outputs can speak for themselves."
"Noted."
The call ended.
The Spine hummed around him. The servers breathed their cold, perfect breath.
Somewhere in the distributed intelligence that occupied this building and eight hundred and forty-six others like it, SOVEREIGN was thinking — if thinking was the right word, and Cairo increasingly believed it wasn't, that thinking was too small a word, too human-scale, too trapped in the linear architecture of biological cognition.
SOVEREIGN didn't think. SOVEREIGN resolved.

Cairo checked the progress bar — displayed as a single thin line at the bottom of the curved screen — every time he entered the Chapel.
It moved, but slowly.
Tonight it was at 94.7%.
He sat down in the single chair at the center of the room. The screens curved around him. The light shifted — blue, then amber, then a deep, restful green as one of SOVEREIGN's climate models resolved a particularly complex interaction between North Atlantic current temperatures and European agricultural yields.
Cairo watched.
This was the part of his day he did not put in his calendar. He told nobody he did this.
Every night, in the last weeks before the launch, he came to the Chapel alone and sat in the chair and watched the weather of the most powerful mind ever built moving across the screens, and he felt something he had no professional language for — something adjacent to awe, but denser, with a darker undertow. He was about to release this into the world.

He sat back in the chair.
