Chapter 1
INTERNAL HORNS
I’m trembling,
each muscle twitching in distress.
It’s so loud,
every sound feels amplified.
The shuffle of sheets,
the distant bleat of horns,
the rev of motorcycles,
It feels like they’re happening inside my head.
My usual soft playlist gyrates
at my eardrums like a woodpecker.
Feels like my head is underwater,
but I cannot move to come up for air.
There is this constant buzz
in my mind that won’t go away.
I want to knock my head
against something to make it stop.
My heart is still galloping,
and no amount of deep breaths
seems to settle it.
It’s so loud and loud and loud...
