Albany: The journey home

Albany opened her eyes, and the first thing she saw was the sea foam lapping at her paws. The sand was damp, and the sky was still streaked with dark clouds from the storm that had just passed.

She was a young dryosaurus, small but swift, with large, curious eyes. She remembered being swept away by the swollen river, separated from her herd during the storm.

“Mom? Taulo? Where is everyone?” Albany called out, but the song of the seabirds was her only answer.

Although she was scared, Albany knew she couldn’t stay there.

Her home was on a plateau in the island’s interior, protected by the Great Tree, where the Dryosaurus lived in peace, safe from the dangers of the outside world. So, with determination, and her legs trembling slightly, she set out on the journey back home.

Albany left the beach behind and ventured into the dense jungle.

After walking for half a day, she came to a wide clearing bathed in sunlight, where many herds of herbivorous dinosaurs had gathered: Parasaurolophus, Triceratops, Maiasaura, and others were grazing peacefully together.

“Oh! What are you doing hiding there, little one?” asked a mother Parasaurolophus, with her young sheltered beneath her legs. “Poor creature, you look terrible. Come here, you’re safe here!”

Albany approached cautiously, but the dinosaurs in the clearing were kind and offered her food and water. The little Dryosaurus felt safe and stayed there to regain her strength.

No one asked her where she came from or where she was going. The dinosaurs in the clearing shared the shade of the trees and the tranquility of food in abundance.

Over the next two days, Albany had grown accustomed to the comfort of the clearing. However, every time she saw the other herds, she couldn’t help but feel a longing for home. The dinosaur families in the clearing were close-knit. Albany took part in their daily activities and played with the younger ones, who looked at her with curiosity.

That night, Albany looked up at the sky and thought of her family. She missed her mother, her brother Taulo, and the warmth of her herd.

“I must go back,” Albany told the dinosaurs the next day.

The dinosaurs in the clearing tried to convince her to stay.

“Beyond the clearing lie terrible predators,” warned an old Camarasaurus.

“And the forbidden zone. A strange place that many avoid,” murmured a Maiasaura.

But Albany was determined. She thanked them for their care, listened to their advice, and bid them farewell with a bow. The little Dryosaurus set off on her journey, guided by her desire to be reunited with her family.

Following the advice of the dinosaurs in the clearing, Albany avoided the territorial herds whose roars could be heard in the distance. Competition for food and attacks by predators had made them wary of other dinosaurs.

As she crossed an open field, Albany heard small squeaks coming from the grass. It was the first time the Dryosaurus had heard those squeaks, and she couldn’t tell who they belonged to. Believing they were harmless dinosaurs; Albany followed the squeaks until she came upon a group of Compsognathus scavenging the remains of a dinosaur.

The compys let out angry screeches and bared their small, sharp teeth to protect their prey from the intruder. Albany realized her mistake and backed away slowly while the compys kept their eyes on her. Although she wasn’t large, she was taller than they were and had strong legs for running. When Albany had moved far enough away, the compys stopped paying attention to her and went back to feeding on their prey.

The little Dryosaurus breathed a sigh of relief and continued on her way, avoiding any unfamiliar noises. She walked until nightfall, then found a safe spot and lay down to sleep.

The next day, Albany resumed her journey, following the route recommended by the dinosaurs in the clearing.

It would take her several days to get home via that route, which took a long detour around much of the island, but it would keep her out of danger. As she walked, something caught Albany’s attention: a long metal structure covered in plants. It reminded her of the fence surrounding her home.

“This might be a faster way home,” thought the little Dryosaurus.

Albany crossed the fence and continued along the dirt path until she came upon a couple of strange metal objects, cars and jeeps, abandoned in an area of tall grass. The little Dryosaurus was distracted by the sight of those objects.

Suddenly, her instincts told her that something was wrong. She was being watched. Albany ran to hide behind a fallen log.

From her hiding spot, Albany scanned her surroundings. There was nothing, just an uncomfortable silence. She held her breath until she felt like she couldn’t breathe. Suddenly, a lone pachycephalosaurus appeared on the other side of the path.

Albany breathed a sigh of relief; she’d gotten worked up over nothing. She was about to come out of her hiding place to say hello to the dinosaur when some growls from the tall grass put her on alert. A group of velociraptors emerged from the grass, running toward the pachycephalosaurus, which was unable to react to the predators. Albany held her breath as she watched the raptors hunt the unsuspecting dinosaur. The little dryosaurus could feel her heart pounding in her chest as the frenzied sounds of the hunt died down.

Albany was terrified.

“I don’t think I like this path anymore,” she realized.

Albany knew she couldn’t stay there. She waited silently for the predators to be distracted by their prey so she could make her escape.

When the opportunity arose, Albany had to fight against her own body, which refused to move. Her clumsiness caused one of the raptors to notice her presence.

When she met the predator’s gaze, Albany panicked. Without thinking, she ran with all her might, dodging logs, branches, and roots without looking back. She just wanted to get away from the danger.

When she finally stopped, the predator was no longer following her, if it ever had. Albany realized she was too far gone to go back the way she had come.

Exhausted, she took refuge under a bush and slept without dreaming.

The next day, Albany woke up with renewed energy. She walked for half a day until she reached a hill from which she could see her home in the distance: the plateau and the Great Tree. She figured it would take her a couple of days to reach her destination.

“Maybe taking the shortcut wasn’t such a bad idea,” she thought.

But between her and her home lay the dreaded forbidden zone.

Albany sighed and, with determination, set off. The trees and dirt trails gave way to gray roads and gigantic concrete structures: laboratories, stores, and abandoned buildings. Even though they were overgrown with vegetation, you could still sense that something special had once been there. Albany looked curiously at broken screens and dusty toys, unable to make sense of them.

As she explored the abandoned streets, Albany didn’t notice that a pair of Carnotaurus were stalking her. The wind shifted direction and carried their scent to her. Just in time, Albany spotted them and ran toward the broken window of a laboratory, through which she slipped inside. The predators roared furiously; they weren’t going to give up that easily.

Inside, Albany explored the laboratory’s hallways until she found a room with empty incubators. She recalled a story the elders of her herd used to tell: about creatures with soft skin and white clothes who helped the dinosaurs be born and who, one day, without explanation, left; shortly afterward, the dinosaurs spread across the island.

Albany shook her head to clear her mind. There was no point in getting distracted by those thoughts when all she wanted was to get home. She returned to the hallway and walked to the back of the building, where she found an exit. She looked around to make sure the path was clear and quickly ran into the forest.

She had survived the forbidden zone, but the danger wasn’t over yet. Without Albany realizing it, the Carnotaurus had picked up her scent.

The next morning, Albany felt she was very close to home. In her mind, she could smell the scent of the plants on the plateau and hear the echo of familiar calls.

As she drank from a stream, Albany heard heavy footsteps. The Carnotaurus were lurking. The little Dryosaurus had to act smart. She couldn’t let them follow her all the way home.

Cleverly, Albany covered herself with leaves and managed to evade her pursuers. She knew that trick wouldn’t work forever; eventually, she’d have to face them. That’s when she heard a loud snore coming from among the trees. Following the sound, she discovered a sleeping Tyrannosaurus rex.

Albany controlled her emotions and remained calm. She looked at the sleeping predator and remembered that Tyrannosaurus rex and Carnotaurus are territorial hunters. The little Dryosaurus devised a risky plan: she would lead the Carnotaurus toward the Tyrannosaurus and pit them against each other.

Albany ran toward the Carnotaurus and provoked them with a defiant, high-pitched screech. The predators chased her without hesitation. Albany led them close to the Tyrannosaurus, but one of the Carnotaurus managed to ambush her and knocked her down.

Surrounded, Albany thought it was the end. But then, the Tyrannosaurus roared into view, drawn by the commotion. The Carnotaurus forgot about Albany to face the new threat.

The little Dryosaurus took advantage of the confusion to escape. Hidden among the vegetation, she watched the carnivores fight until the Tyrannosaurus gained the upper hand and began chasing the fleeing Carnotaurus as they ran away. Her plan had worked. The noise faded into the distance, and Albany collapsed, exhausted.

When she awoke, all was calm. Albany got to her feet and, with a steady stride, climbed the final stretch up to the plateau.

There stood the metal fence marking her herd’s territory. She paused for a moment to look back and reflect on the long journey she had traveled. She remembered the dinosaurs in the clearing, the dangers she had faced, and how her ingenuity had allowed her to outwit the most dangerous predators.

She crossed the threshold and was greeted with shouts of joy. Her mother hugged her with her neck, and her brother Taulo ran to her side, leaping with happiness.

In the shade of the Great Tree, the herd celebrated her return.

“I’m home,” Albany let out a squeal of relief.

A good plot that flowed well for the most part with some twists along the way, good well developed characters... there are a few technical mistakes, but nothing to harsh. I must say toward the end of the book there were some issues with like a quick change ...
