[Prologue] Morning Rain

New Orleans

‘Androids, huh..?’

Always seemed like something so distant. So far all they’ve managed to do is ruin humanity.′

‘I hate androids. The wife and kids are fascinated by the machines.’

‘I cannot wrap my head around that fascination though...’

“Officer Cobb! My office now. We need to talk.” Director Todd Rowe called out to him. A small sigh came out of Josh as he stood up and placed his digital magazine on his desk as the picture of an android with the words Buy One Today disappeared from the screen. He brushed off his lengthy brown jacket and his clothes under it before entering Director Rowe’s office.

As Josh Cobb entered the office, the smell of cigarettes and coffee filled the doorway. It wasn’t a pleasant smell, but he was awfully familiar with it as Josh himself was smoking often. His wife always tried to convince him to stop, but the stress of trying to maintain his work and personal life always brought him back. Some smoke lifted off the cigarette that the Director added to the many others in the ashtray. “Sit.” Director Rowe said the moment Officer Cobb entered the room.

He pulled out a black leather desk chair and sat down, looking around the room as the Director typed something into his computer. Josh looked at the giant wall that he saw when he entered the office. There a huge touchscreen covering the entirety of the wall and the screen had “New Orleans Police Department” on it before it switched to a case file.

“Officer Cobb, another murder has been committed and confirmed. You’ve been assigned the investigation for this murder as the main investigator. I’ve updated the case logs on your tablet. View them and get a move on.” Director Rowe said as he stared back at his computer, avoiding eye contact with Josh. Without a word Josh left the Director’s office and returned to his desk. He opened the case file and started to swipe through the tablet to read the case.

New Orleans Police Department

Offense: Voluntary Manslaughter Report Date: November 15, 2038

Agency Case Number: 58-69865 Time of Death: Unknown

Number of Assailants: Unknown Number of Victims: 1 Name of Victim: Fiona Baker

Officer Cobb sat down his tablet as the case file faded away into a darkness as the tablet powered off. He left his desk and exited the large police building before entering a small old truck. It was slightly rusted, but Josh was a persistent man who wanted to wait until the truck was truly falling apart before he got it fixed. Josh turned the key and started the rusting truck and drove to the scene of the murder.

New Orleans

It was a small shotgun house. The owner of the house didn’t seem to care too much about it as it seemed old and falling apart. Trash laid out in front of the house and the fence surrounding the house seemed as if it was falling apart as well. The roof looked as if it was falling off a little. “Officer Cobb. I’m surprised you made it. Come this way.” Lieutenant Gavin Tatton called to Josh as he lifted the police tape that surrounded the outside of the house for him to enter. “The body is this way.” Lieutenant Tatton led him into the house.

“Jesus Lieutenant. How long as this woman been dead?” Josh shook his head as he walked over to the corpse before kneeling down beside it, examining her up close. “We don’t know that yet. We believe the temperature was tampered with before the assailant or assailants left. Whoever did this had some sort of idea of how to hide the time of death.” The Lieutenant said as he watched Josh.

Officer Cobb stood up, looking over at Gavin. “Do we have any suspects?” Gavin looked at the corpse. “We haven’t gotten a report yet on any family. We’ll set up officers around here tonight to guard the body as we can’t tamper or remove any evidence just yet.” He sighed. The Lieutenant wasn’t the happiest person about this case as there wasn’t any information about the victim.

“That’s bullshit. We can’t investigate a murder if we aren’t able to check the evidence.” Officer Cobb rubbed his face a little. “I need some fresh air. I’ll be back a few minutes.” Josh left the scene of the murder and decided it’d be best to drive home as he had enough of the scene already. Lieutenant Tatton grunted and walked around the small shotgun house a little bit longer.

New York

A calming, yet determined voice overwhelmed the room as Android A1097 awoken. It glanced around the room as it’s other models laid in the corner deactivated. It noticed how white the room was and how clean the man made sure it was. It’s eyes locked onto the lights for a brief moment. The lights were bright which caused the room to seem even whiter. “Android A1097. Are you awake now?” It looked at the man who spoke before responding. “Yes sir. I am awake.” The android had a monotone voice that echoed throughout the room. “That’s good to know. It must be...quite the sight to wake up to your former models surrounding you.” The man rubbed his hands together as he pressed a few buttons on a machine that caused the arms holding onto the android to let go and set it free to move around.

“You aren’t experiencing any...issues, are you?” The man pulled out a clipboard and a pen, making marks on the paper in front of him. “No sir.” Android A1097 said as it analyzed the man. The man wore your average white dress shirt and black dress jacket which was left undone. He had a slight bit of facial hair and the rest of his hair was short. From what the android was able to see while analyzing, it found out this man’s name, age, height, and any general information about him.

Name: Jordan Miller Age: 37

Height: 5′9 Weight: 150 lbs

Hair: Brown Eyes: Green

This Jordan Miller was the creator of the androids that humans see today and have serve them. This man is every android’s future. Within the android’s pupils, a green ‘X’ appeared before it started blinking. He caught a small glimpse of it’s eyes before focusing back onto the paper. “Can you walk around and move accordingly?” Jordan kept his eyes on the paper he was marking. The android took a step and wobbled a little, but steadied itself and moved around some more. Jordan wrote down and marked everything the robot did. “Thank you A1097. You might be the first of the A1 series to be useful..” He said the last part under his breath as to not alert android of it’s possible fate.

“Well you pass the test A1097. That’s honestly surprising since the others didn’t.” He said as he watched the android look at the deactivated and failed attempts. “You’ll be given a uniform and we’ll depart later this morning.” A1097 shot it’s head up. “Yes, Jordan. If you don’t mind me asking, where am I being assigned to? I’d certainly find it helpful if you’d fill me in on my mission or goal.” It gave a smile, but no emotion was shown behind it. Jordan watched the android’s facial expression as he wanted to be sure the program was working correctly.

“I see you analyzed me already. My top class android doesn’t even have to be told about being able to analyze. I see that I’ve perfected the programming for you.” He cleared his voice before answering the android. “You’ll be assigned to the New Orleans Police Department. Their cases have rising recently. All murder cases too. Which is why you were created.” Jordan placed his clipboard down on the dark wooden table in front of him. “You see A1097, New Orleans is higher than Detroit and other such places in crime percentages. That is where you come in. Anyway I’ve said too much.” Jordan stared at the android, hoping it understood it’s role as A1097′s eyes had a green X in them once more.

The man began turning off the lights in the room. “Join me A1097. We’ll depart this morning before noon. Get ready.” He exited the room and the android followed him carefully, making sure not lose it’s step. “Alright sir.” As they walked, he ordered one of his androids to retrieve the uniform for A1097. “Callie, please get A1097 it’s uniform. They are leaving within the next couple of hours.” Callie nodded. “Yes Jordan.” It left to retrieve the uniform as Jordan and Android A1097 continued their walk throughout the man’s manor.

A electronic vehicle pulled up outside the gate of the manor as Android A1097 walked out in uniform. Jordan Miller followed after it along with Callie. “You must hurry A1097. The Director said he’d like you as soon as possible.” The android looked at Jordan. “Yes Jordan.” It said in it’s naturally monotone voice as the green X appeared in it’s eyes again. The android started to blink before the X disappeared. “Have a safe drive A1097.” The android Callie said with a smile that had no emotion behind it. It’s eyes did the same green X sign before it disappeared. A1097 nodded and entered the electronic car. The inside of the car was empty as there was no driver. It had a new car scent and a hint of lemon inside of it. The seats were very much clean and were black and white. The word Location covered the windshield and the android spoke. “New Orleans Police Department.” A1097 said as the car started itself and began driving. The car showed the android the time between now and the time it would arrive which was 19 hours and 46 minutes.

New Orleans

Android A1097 arrived at the police department and exited the electronic car. It was early morning and it had just began to rain. It entered the building and looked around. The lobby had a clean look to it and had dark, but warm grey walls. There was an android sitting by an old lady filing in a report. A1097 looked at the two before walking up to the front desk. “What is the issue ma’am?” The old man are the front desk asked as he got ready to pull out a clipboard with a report sheet on it. “I’m here for Director Todd Rowe.” A1097 looked the old man and he looked back. “I’m sorry, but the Director can’t see anyone at the moment.” The Old Man put the clipboard down after realizing the ‘lady’ was here for the Director. “I’m Android A1097. I was assigned to this department and I need to meet Director Rowe so I can start my mission.” It’s eyes showing a green X again. The old man wrote a pass for the android and before sending it on it’s way, he said “It’s the 4th floor.” The android entered an elevator and stood there before hitting the 4 on the touch-pad.

As A1097 entered the 4th floor, it saw the office, but analyzed the Director to see that he was for sure who the old man said he’d be. The Director wore a black suit with a white undershirt. He seemed very professional and seemed to have a unique way of handling his fellow officers. A1097 analyzed the Director further. The android’s eyes has green X’s as it analyzed the man.

Name: Todd Rowe Age: 56

Height: 5′8 Weight: 194 lbs

Hair: Grey Eyes: Brown

Family: Diane Rowe (Wife)

It walked up to the small set of stairs that lead to his office and stood outside of the door. Yelling could be heard by a man inside. The android focused on the yelling and got a clearer version of what the man was yelling. “This is fucking bullshit Director Rowe! How are we not supposed to investigate? Not being able to investigate is leaving the assailant at large and they could’ve already left the state!” The man didn’t seem so happy about the situation. The Director sighed and rubbed his face a little. “Yes, I understand Officer Purcell. It is an issue, I will address it as I see fit. We have too many cases as it is. Leave my office this instance. I’ll send someone to analyze the scene as soon as I can, but as of now, we only have Officer Cobb.” He said calmly as he stopped looking at his computer to take a glance at Officer Purcell.

Officer Purcell stood up and stormed out of the office, glaring at A1097. In this time, the android managed to analyze Officer Purcell. He wore a dark brown jacket with a kinda dirty grey shirt underneath. His face didn’t look so kind or friendly. The android took note in avoiding Purcell unless it genuinely had to speak to him. A1097 watched him continue to storm off into what seemed to be the break room. It analyzed the rest of the man that it had seen.

Name: Blake Purcell Age: 28

Height: 5′6 Weight: 152 lbs

Hair: Dirty Blonde Eyes: Hazel

Family: None

The android glanced into Director Rowe’s office to see him looking back at his computer. A1097 opened the glass door and entered the office. “Good morning Director Rowe.” It walked closer to the desk as it analyzed the space around it. “You must be Android A1097. The lobby called up while I was talking to Officer Purcell to let me know.” The Director looked away from his computer and got a good look at the android. A1097′s eyes had green X’s once again as it tried to understand the Director’s actions. “Welcome to New Orleans. I’m sure the trip over here was long and bothersome, but I’m glad to have you on our team.” He turned back to his computer. “Ah, yes sir. I’m honored to be here right now.” The android’s eyes shifted around. “Jordan Miller, the man who created you, he said that you’d work as an investigator and a negotiator for us. It’d be a nice change to the force and hopefully a good one.”

A ringing noise filled the room and the Director looked at his computer before displaying a case on the large screen in the room. “A report just came in. A man is actively trying to commit suicide on top 2054 Posca Plaza.” He said as he sent the report to the rest of the officers. “We should head over there then. Who knows how much time we have before it escalates.” Android A1097 said as it stood up. The Director watched it as it left. “Alright then A1097. Officers on duty are already there. I’m sure you’re programmed to withstand these types of situations.” The android left the office and made it’s way back to the lobby. An electronic car waited for the android in the rain and it entered the vehicle. A1097 gave the electronic car the address of the building before heading that way.

New Orleans

Android A1097 stepped out of the car and back into the pouring rain. There was the sound of multiple sirens going off and officer radios going off, repeating ”The negotiator has arrived so stay alert of the situation!” The android walked up to the building at looked up at the man as his life was threatened. “Does anyone know why he is making this attempt?” A1097 asked as it looked at the man. “Well obviously fucking not!” Officer Blake Purcell snapped at it. “Why the hell does that matter?! This man is going to die if you don’t get your robotic ass up there.” The android adjusted it’s clothing and cleared it’s throat before walking into the building to find a way up to the top. It found a way up and joined the man on the rooftop.

“S-stay away!” The man yelled at A1097. The android stopped in its tracks. It looked at the man who faced them a little bit. From the view, it was able to analyze the man. While the android analyzed the man, he got closer to the edge. From the ground below, the officers starting to stress over the situation. It’s eyes have green X’s in the pupils of them once more. It was understanding and learning.

Name: Kaleb Johnson Age: 31

Height: 5′9 Weight: 151 lbs

Hair: Black Eyes: Brown

Family: Jamie (Adopted Daughter) (Deceased)

The android raised it’s voice. “Mr. Johnson! I’m going to need you to step down and come with me!” Kaleb looked at A1097. “Please Kaleb.” It was windy on top of this building and the rain was only getting stronger. The man looked back down to see the ground below the building. “H-how do you know my name?!” He didn’t seem to ease up or anything. “I know a few things about you Kaleb. You don’t have to do this!” The rain picked up and it came down harder. “You don’t understand! I HAVE to!” The android made a small advancement in moving towards Kaleb.

“Your daughter, Jamie! She wouldn’t want this!” It tried to find a way through the information it learned. “H-How do you know about her?!” It agitated the man more and added more pressure to him. He moved slightly closer to the edge. “She’s your adopted daughter. You brought her into your home because you wanted to see her live a happy life outside of an adoption center!” A1097 continued to speak of his daughter, hoping it’d spark something that’d bring him down safely. The man didn’t respond though, but instead glanced at the android. “She died...not too long ago.. It’s driving you to do this, but she wouldn’t want that. You and I both know that Kaleb.” A1097 continued moving closer to the man. “If she didn’t get struck by that damn car, things would be alright still! My baby girl would still be with me. We’d still be a family...” Kaleb backed away from the edge a little, slipping slightly from the amount of rain.

A1097 continued to move forward. “You are still a family! You just don’t want to see it that way. I need you to come here, is that alright?” It tried to convince Mr. Johnson to retreat from the edge of the building. “I-I can’t... T-t-they’ll arrest me and I won’t be able to deal with that either! She wouldn’t want that.” The man stayed in his place, not moving a muscle. “I promise, they won’t arrest you! I just need you calmly come here so I can get you down. You’ll be fine, trust me.” Kaleb Johnson looked at A1097 and slowly moved closer to the android. It met Kaleb half away and started to walk him back to the roof entrance/exit.

Before they could reach the door, the police busted through before arresting the man. He looked at A1097 and began to slump over. “You said they wouldn’t arrest me...” The android looked into Kaleb’s eyes. “I am not in a higher position of authority so I’m not able to call the so called shots here when it comes to such things.” The monotone voice of the android made the man notice how many lies were probably said as A1097 tried to negotiate with him. Kaleb Johnson was taken away soon after and Android A1097 returned to the New Orleans Police Department.

New Orleans

As A1097 exited the electronic car, it noticed how the rain had let out and began to stop. It went inside the building and showed the pass to the old man again after he had welcomed it back. The android went up to the 4th floor and located the Director’s office once more. It stood around the open desks and waited for an order a new mission. The android closed it’s eyes and stood there without any movement. It wasn’t long before Director Rowe called A1097 and Josh into his office. “Officer Cobb! Android A1097! Please report to my office now.” Josh hastily made his way to Todd’s office and the android took it’s time behind Josh. They both stood before Director Todd Rowe now.

“Excuse me A1097 and Josh. I should’ve called you both in earlier, but a case came up and well we had to postpone this meeting.” The Director looked away from his computer and glanced at the two standing before him. “Anyway Officer Cobb, it is clear that you are struggling to do this investigation on your own. This android working here was inevitable, but it could improve your work and overall your performance as an officer of New Orleans.” Josh raised his eyes that were venturing around the floor and looked at Director Rowe. “You’re kidding, right? You’re going to stick me with this stupid fucking tin can? I’m sorry, but you’re going to need to find someone else for this Boss.” Josh glared at A1097. “You know how much I despise these things?” He sighed and rubbed his eyes.

“I’m sorry Officer Cobb, but if you have an issue with it then hand in your damn badge. I’m not going to put up with your childish act because of an android.” Todd looked down at his desk before looking at his computer again. “You are both working together and that’s final. Get used to it.” He began typing once more and switched his focus to his computer and filing cases and reports. Josh walked out of the office and went to his own desk. “Have a nice evening Director.” Android A1097 left Director Rowe’s office before walking over to Officer Cobb’s desk.

It stood next to his desk. “Officer Cobb?” He slowly looked up at the android slightly irritated. “I am honored to work by your side as your partner. I hope we can get along.” Josh looked at his tablet, looking at the case. “I hope my presence doesn’t become an issue for you in the future. I’d find it quite inconvenient and I’m sure you would too.” He continued to look at the case, ignoring the android. A1097 sat in the leather desk chair that sat in the desk that was in front of Officer Cobb’s desk. “Josh Cobb, was it?” He looked up at her and sighed. “Yes, I’m Officer Josh Cobb. And if it shuts you up, who are you?” He had a hateful sounding voice, but that was fine. “I’m Android A1097.” The android said as they analyzed the desk they were sitting in. “You don’t have an actual name? Like Bianca?” Josh was confused, but annoyed more than anything. “Of course, I don’t. I wasn’t created with one. It is the person I’m assigned to’s job to give me a name such as Bianca.” A1097 smiled, which bothered Josh since it was so emotionless and static.

He straightened himself up and rubbed his face a little. “And you’re assigned to me?” Officer Cobb sighed heavily. “Fine uh....” He looked at it. “Blue. Your name is Blue. It’ll get annoying calling you A1097 or anything longer than Blue.” Josh went back to reading the case file. The android’s eyes had green X’s in it’s pupils. “Blue? Alright Officer Cobb. If that’s what you’d like to call me.” She understood her new name and the name that appeared as A1097 on her jacket changed to ‘Blue’. “It’s an interesting name, indeed.” Blue picked up the tablet in front of their computer and turned it on. It switched it to the case file before viewing it and filling herself in everything. “We’ll be returning the the scene tomorrow. Don’t fuck anything up.” Josh said as he stood up and placed the tablet on the desk before it faded to black as it turned off.
