Chapter 1
I’m a Nephillim child, also known as a Shadow Hunter.
I’m turning 18 in a few weeks and all Shadow Hunters start training when they’re 16 years old. I know more about runes and spells and how to conjure portals. And my mother can’t understand why I love it so much. But to be honest to you, I just have a knack with getting everything perfect the first time. And I know I will suck with defending myself with seraph blades, or even my fists.
“Nithennas!” That’s my mother calling. I ignore her, I know what she’s going to tell me. That it’s time to start learning to defend myself.....urgh! I hate it.
“Nithennas, please come down, I’d like to speak to you.”
“Coming mother!” I yell back at her. I stand up from the floor and open the door and walk down the spiraling stair case. I walk into the kitchen where my mother is busy baking.
“Nithennas, have a cookie, I’ve made some lemon and poppy seed cookies, and I think you will love it.” She said while holding out a plate to me. I take one and bit into it. Flavors explode in my mouth. The lemon are complimented by the poppy seed. I moan taking another bite. My mother grin at me.
“So how is it?”
“Heaven” I say taking the last bite. She put a glass of milk in front of me and I wash the last bit of the cookie down. “Thanks mom”
“It’s a pleasure Sweetie”
“So why did you actually call me down mom? I know it’s not to taste a cookie.” I told her taking another sip.
“You know me to well Nithennas. You know it’s your birthday in a few weeks, and you’ll be 18 and you still need to know the basic defense training. I’ve organized with Luthiel to teach you.”
“Aww, come on mom, you know I don’t have any interest in fighting.” I groan.
“I know but it’s for your own good. You’re a Shadow Hunter and you need to know how to defend yourself. If anything or anyone try to kidnap you. You have to know how to defend yourself!”
“Fine! I will, but only once. Then at least you can say I tried.” I said with my arms crossed. I know I wouldn’t fare well. Everyone will just laugh at my meager attempt to hit or block.
I downed the rest of my milk and went outside to take a stroll. There is this huge library next to the Gathering Hall, and I love spending time there when I’m not in my room reading.
“Hi Nithennas...” I hear someone call my name. I look around but can’t find the person yelling my name. I shrug my shoulders and walk on.
“Hey, I called you but you didn’t answer.” I hear someone whisper beside my head. I yell and start running. The next moment I’m grabbed around my waist and I’m pulled to a stop.
“Let me go!” I scream, I thrash around in the persons arms.
“Stop thrashing like that and I’ll let you go, but don’t run again” I nod my head. He let me go and I turn around slowly. When I see it’s Luthiel I give him what I thought was a hard slap. But I think to him it felt like a butterfly kiss. He chuckled at my hitting attempt.
“Urgh!!” I huff and walk off. Luthiel walked in a fairly slow stride to my power walking. “What do you want Luthiel?”
“Your mum asked me to teach you self-defense.” He grinned at me while saying it. “And it seems like you need more than that. You hit like a baby in a womb.” I get angry at this. I stop and he walks on. I start walking to get behind him, and I smack his head.
“Jeesh! Baby girl why did you do that for?” He said holding his head. I smack him again.
“That’s for calling me baby girl. And the first one was for saying I hit like a baby.” I smiled sweetly at him and walked towards the library. He grabbed my hand and pulled me to a stop.
“I’m only teasing you Nithennas, no need to take me so serious. I just wanted to see what power you have for self-defense. But running away won’t do you any good if you’re to come into contact with a wolf or elf. You know they’re fast.” He has a point. But me trying to fight even one of those two species, will only end up in me being dead or eaten or even captured.
“Sooooo?” I said raising my eyebrows at him.
“Sooooo! You need to come to practice tomorrow. I’ll see you at 10am. And don’t be late.” He said walking away.
I stood there staring at his retreating back. Tomorrow I’ll show him. He’s messing with the wrong girl. I turn around and walk towards the library doors, I’ll read on some self-defense today. The Magic can wait.
