Summary

Echo has lived her whole life in the small, mining village of Torrine. All year long, its inhabitants mine gold for the cloaked creatures that arrive to collect it. They take the gold and, along with it, one person, leaving behind a family's unheard screams. All they know is that there is nothing anyone can do to change it. Until one year, they take Echo and what she sees changes her whole world. After Echo is taken she discovers that she is to be sacrificed to the thing that keeps the very creatures in control of her world to make sure that they never lose control. She must work to stop the oppression of her species and save herself from her fate. Throughout her journey she learns all about the world she lives in and its past and begins to understand what she must do to survive and help the people she cares about. In the end, after learning and understanding the past and with it the present she ends up being sacrifice anyway but instead of dying, ends up in the past.

Chapter 1

The long black car, brought the rain. Or at least that was what we all believed. Somehow, whenever its wheels rolled past the town walls, the clouds above us thickened and Down. Poured. the Rain. The car was always what caused it. Or it might have been something else, something inside the car. But whatever it was, it was something that caused the perpetual haze of a storm to follow wherever it went. Of course though, no-one knew. The tinted grey windows never rolled down and the billowing black capes of whatever climbed out obscured the car’s interior. The other thing the car brought into the village was fear. Fear that the person leaving the village this year would be one of your own. They always took someone along with our hard mined gold, an unsaid warning. No questions would be asked. They left with questions hanging in the air, unspoken and the silent screams of a family echoing behind them. All unheard. It was like that every year. I knew because I felt the questions every year until the day of my 12th birthday.

When they came for me.

I sighed and stared out the window. I had caught a glimpse of a glowing silver orb in the middle of the car before it had been cloaked in the creatures shadow. The rest of the car was normal, uninteresting. So instead I watched as my life faded into the distance. The desert flashed past. I blindly watched the various Daemons prowling the sands. A pulse came from where I knew the orb sat. The ever-present strom crackled overhead. The car moved on.
