(Gina's pov. )
*Ten years past*
Ahhhhhh!! Why me, why do I always end up in these situations?
"Hey!! Catch the dang ball so he can get in!" No thanks, I'll get hurt.
" Move nerd you're in the way" I'm too scared to move sorry
"Just get hit already idiot." That's rude. You get hit.
" Move princess!!" That one I listened to. It was Anthony Black, the most handsomest third grader ever. He was a grade older so the only times I got to see him were on Wednesdays for pe when our grades do group dance or Fun Fridays like this when we do dodgeball. I hate dodgeball. They always aim for my-
"duck!!" Anthony screamed, kicking me out of my thoughts.
'Wait...what did he say?' I see the ball flying at my face and quickly stick my hands out to protect myself...
"Yayyyy!!!"
"We winnnn!!"
"What? What happened? Anthony!!?" All I could do was scream his name. Wait.. What is this red thingy? The ball? I caught the ball? I look up from my daze to see Anthony half smiling at me.
"Good job princess, we won. Nice catch." Anthony grimaces. He turns and begins to walk away.
"U-u-uh you thanks. I.. I mean. Thank you Anthony. " I say slowly recovering from my dumbstruck gaze. "I like baseball!!" Well, spoke to soon. Wait?! Is he turning around?
"Me too princess. Want to play over there?" Anthony points to the far backstop by the big tree where a game was just ending. I just nod my head hoping my mouth won't betray me this way.
He quickly grabs my hand cool let's go. As we get to the game I notice a far figure sitting near the backstop. Glancing over I notice it's a girl, silently watching the game playing with something in her hands.
"Antony? " I quickly begin while he is retaining our stuff.
"Yes princess?" He smirks down at my 3'10 frame. He wasn't tall he was 4'3 tall in his eyes I see a hunger, like a lion to a lamb...no, a kid to a candy shop, it filled my stomach with nerves and gave me a tingling feeling I at the time thought was fear. "What's the matter princess?"
I begin twiddling my fingers nervously. What is this feeling. I can run a mile right now.I look up to meet his eyes. "Uhmm who is she?" I ask pointing over to the girl alone, finally remembering my question. Looking at him I watch his once dancing, playful eyes fall flat and having a dark ominous mood to them.
"That is Giselle. Leave her alone Gina. Seriously. " then his hand darts out to move the braid that's fell in front of my blue eyes as I stare at him, curious. He smiles softly and pushes a bat into my hand. "c'mon let's go. Hey Andrew! Gina and I are going to bat first." He calls jogging off.
I walk behind the back stop to wait to bat while Anthony steps up to the base. As I'm there, I cheer for my team, never forgetting Giselle. Why did they leave her alone? Why doesn't she play baseball? Does she not like baseball? Why is Anthony mad at her?
"Hey! You! Braid chick. It's your turn to bat!" I look up to see Andrew Hunter yelling at me. He, unlike Anthony isn't the handsomest guy. If Anthony was the Prince, Andrew would be the dragon. Andrew was also really tall, he could almost touch the sky tall, I never asked how tall that was for fear of the fire that might come out of his mouth.
"C'mon princess you can do it!" I hear Anthony cheering for me. With his nice words I know I can do it. I swing once-
"Strike" yells someone from behind me. They shouldn't tell people when I miss. That's mean. I reset.
"Strike two" Stop it! Why do they keep yelling? My t-ball coach never yelled at me. They are mean.
"Why is she even here? She can't play to save the king!!" Andrew cackles. His friends begin to high five him on his dumbness. He is getting on my nerves. What did my brother say? Hit the ball like he was picking on you? Annnndrew!! You are now the ball.
I quickly shuffle from the right to the left side of the home base after hearing Giselle cheer for the "little guy" from her spot, now laying in the grass.
" Andrew Hunter!! I have something for you. It's called a second base hit!!" I yell then position myself in my best Jackie Robinson impression. Let's show him Gina! After they all finish laughing from my weird threat, Andrew throws the ball.
*smack*
the ball goes soaring over everyone, far to the other side of the field, Anthony sprints to home base while I jog. I know where that ball is going and it's not anywhere close. I easily get that home run and just to spite them I lean against the back stop waiting for Andrew.
When he begins coming back he looks shocked. He then hands me a ball of yarn. "Where's the ball Andrew? Did you lose that like you lost the game?" He just shakes his head and continues looking at the ball of yarn in my hand.
Everyone comes, wanting to see the reason why Andrew stopped playing. It is only Anthony who understands what Andrew was surprised about. "Bloody hell mary!! Gina you busted the ball!! Now we can't play anymore!" Anthony spits at me. He begins pointing slowly realizing no one else was as mad as he was.
"Oh my gosh Gina!!"
"Woah dude that was impressive"
"You're so tiny, how did you do that"
"Woah. Um Gina. That was a a good swing. " Andrew mutters shaking my hand. "Good game, I think I'm going to go look for Anthony."
It was only then that I realized he was gone. Then when I looked over I saw that Giselle was also gone. Huh. When did they leave?
(*ring ring* )
There goes the bell to end the day. That was also the last time Anthony and I ever had a nice conversation.
(The next day before school) "Hey Anthony!!" He looks over at me, then stops continues talking.
(At break) "hi Anthony..." he stands up and leaves his spot to avoid me.
(At lunch)
There he is, Gina don't mess this up. You can't have Prince charming not talk to you. " Uhhhh....h-hi Anthony?" I begin, slowly as to make sure he isn't upset about anything.
"What do you want Jimmy?" He mutters, glaring at me with hard, stone eyes, impossible for me to look away from. With any trace of friendliness washed from his face, replaced with a hard scowl no third grader should hold.
"Actually Tony, my name is Gina. Not Jimmy." I rebutt, barely audible. I breathe in, preparing to repeat myself when he finches away from me. I begin to stare, memorizing his face, not sure what else to do. 'Why doesn't he say anything? Should I repeat myself? Why does he look so mean, I'm kind of scared.' Before I have time to repeat my sentence he finally looks into my eyes with the same coldness as before, making me almost back away in fear.
"Well go away. I no longer know any Gina. When I move I hope I never have to see you again braids." He gets up from the picnic tables and looks me dead in the eyes. His chocolate eyes burning holes into my skin. My fear obvious, he bends down to me and whispers in my ear. "You are no longer my princess, I hate you" And with that he turned away and I never saw him again.
And with that my heart was broken for the first and last time...
