Chapter 1. Home Plate

I stepped up to home plate. My breathing was slow and steady, but as I faced the crowd my heart raced. I’ve done this before, but why did this time feel different? Beth stared at me from the stands. Why was this so hard? Why? I stared at the crowd as the pitcher yelled, “come on! Batter up!” I breathed deeply and walked up. This was it, I thought. It was. If I make this hit we will go to the national league, but if I don’t. I tried not to think about it, but I couldn’t stop. If I make this hit I’ll be famous. If I make it my teammates would like me. If....if....if I make it, it will change my whole life.

I saw my friend Billy on second plate as I positioned myself to hit the ball. You can do it. You can do it. Billy’s gaze settled at me as he gave me a long stare. But then he smiled and gave me a thumbs up. I tightened my grip on my bat, and stared at the pitcher. Then the ball. The one ball that would change my future. The one that was red and white. The future ball. My future everything.

BAM!!!! “The balls going, going, gone!” Yelled the news man. The crowd lit up in cheer. This is it. This is it. I was frozen for a moment as I saw the ball. It flew straight out of the park. Wait did I just hit a homerun? Pride filled my head as I ran and ran. I didn’t care if my leg ached. I didn’t care about anything. I was going to win this game! “And he makes it to third and the crowd goes wild!” “1 plate, second plate, third plate, and four....“. WEE DO WEE DO! The sirens went off. “Stop the game, stop the game!” Yelled the game director. Silence filled the moment. The crowd was wild for a second then all of a sudden they stopped. What happened. Was I out? I tried to shift my leg but I couldn’t. I only received intense pain. I couldn’t see or think straight. Sirens and yelling blared in my ears. I stared up to see the two couches at my side. My team and, and. Suddenly everything turned black. I was buried inside the blackness.
