Vestige

"First let me say that I am a real reader. I read books like I listen to music. In my music library, you will find Chopin, Meatloaf, Marilyn Manson, Michael Jackson, Duke Ellington…You get what I am trying to say. I read books like I listen to music. Drama, Fantasy, Romance, Action…Whatever it may be, but all that matters to me is that I am entertained. No matter the genre, if the book is good, I will read it. Here on Inkitt, I have found good stories that need a little work, I have found those who need lots of work, and yes, there is some real garbage out there (that is my own opinion). Let's get to it, shall we? Vestige. What does the word even mean? Merriam-Webster gives two definitions. Look it up. LOL! The story starts out exciting enough, you have no idea what is really going on, but you keep reading because the author wants you to. The monsters…the cure…What the heck is the author talking about? You read on, hoping to gain some answers. I went through all thirty-three current chapters enjoying them the whole time. Shep is a mystery. Though now knowing his connection with Aurelia, his mystery is slightly less as far as his personal connection is concerned. Still would like to know what his true abilities are. We get that he is strong, but need more. Hate that a main character dies before we really get to understand his role and his feelings towards his peeps. I could go on for days about this story, but I will not ruin it for everyone. Thirty-three chapters of greatness. The occasional (and so slight if you are in the story you will miss it, occasional) grammatical error is there. There is a disconnect in the beginning between past and present. But it does not take away from the story. I now sit and wait until Kassidy figures out where she wants to go with this. Thirty-three chapters of OMG! Then silence. Amazing story, could use some grammatical fixes, but loved it nonetheless."

My first Horror story

"I never really liked reading a horror story. It never really intrigued me or attracted me in any sense to read it but your story is my first horror story and I enjoyed thoroughly. The plots are well planned and the setting of the story is really nice. I like the way you have written the story. I have a regret now. I wish to have written like you have done!"

Wonderful start!

"I absolutely love this so far! Your character development is very thorough, and I love the way you work the character's old lives into the story. The instances and examples you give from their past lives are very creative. I like your take on the post-apocalyptic scenario with the gang twist, and I like the characters you've set up thus far. The names are also very interesting. Your writing is very descriptive and evocative. I immediately had a picture of the setting and of the mutants in my mind. I didn't notice any typos or errors, so it looks very clean. You've obviously put a lot of time and thought into this. Great work! I hope this does well in the contest!"

Marvelous Prose

"As other reviews have stated, zombie stories are pretty common. The plot seems straightforward, and could easily have been drawn from half a dozen sources. That said, I enjoyed the hell out of it. The characters are beautifully sketched, with just enough color and edge to hook you in, but not enough to wear thin. The descriptions are light and strong, and the pages almost turned themselves. Maybe it was overdone in a couple places, especially with the odious president or the doomed mother of a stillborn babe, and the early switch in perspective between Marcus and Aurelia felt slightly awkward, but those are matters of taste. In the end, I'd buy it, and be grateful for the privilege. Well done."

Very good

"So, I figured this was going to be just another zombie story; after all one can find a million for a buck nowadays. And in some ways it was. Headshots, people barely surviving and so on and so forth. That said it drew me in. The biggest thing I look for is the story itself and I like this one. I found the characters to be believable and the story kept me interested. For a market that has a ton of stories in it this one stood out to me. I think part of the reason why is there was more focus on a story being told than on how many zombies kills can I wrack up with a miracle weapon that never runs out of ammo. So I liked it, and I would recommend it"

Mind Blown

"This story is absolutely amazing. It's not the usual type of thing that I read, but I love your storytelling abilities. It pulled me in and left me wanting more. Definitely a must read. Practically flawless in the execution. Great work. It's a must read!"

An intriguing plot and thrill to read

"This is thrilling twist on a zombie apocalypse like scenario; a mysterious virus (which I cannot wait to find out how it originated.) as the cause of the downfall of mankind. The main character of Aurelia is a relate-able young woman who is no stranger to adversity; as her past is slowly revealed throughout the story, you more and more insight into her behavior and motives. I'm most interested in how the character of "Shep" will develop and if his mysterious origins and how he was able to survive will revealed. The fact that I am NOT a fan of zombie stories in the least bit and still enjoy this story speaks to the author's ability to effectively convey what is in their mind into the written word. Not only is her style easy to follow (you will not be distracted by erroneous errors), but it keeps you in a constant state of suspense; revealing just enough information to keep you hooked and wanting to know more."

Vestige

"This was a fantastic read! This was unexpected as zombies usually aren't my thing. The fact they are a mechanism for an engaging plot with interesting and diverse characters makes this take on Zpocalypse outstanding."

Promising

"Interesting. This feels like a zombie book, but maybe isn't - the word isn't used, and the monsters are like zombies but maybe not quite. Nice touch to leave that vague. I don't really like the two characters - one's a bitch and the other a wimp - but there's time for that to change. Here and there I found punctuation issues - a comma in an odd place, for example. Nothing major, and it might have been deliberate, so it's not a big thing. Overall, pretty good."

Post Apocalyse Dystopia sensibly done.

"Kinda reminds me of Fallout 4. Very well realized characters. Leaving the creatures' explanation mostly vague was a good choice that only made them more menacing. Enjoyed the setting but would have loved for the environment and resources to play a bigger part in the plot. Also, specific weapon descriptive choice; machette's aren't thrusting weapons, a bayonet would have worked much better when she was stabbing at the creatures, although with Shep it worked great. That's just nitpicking though. On the whole I rather enjoyed it as a quality post-apocalypse jaunt. Love to see more of it maybe some clashing with rival groups would be cool but looks like more of an anti-new-order kinda thing going looking forward to that.."

Better written than the walking dead novels.

"Not as much of a ringing endorsement as you might expect. But it's pretty damn good. Honestly even as an author of a zombie novel, zombie novels sort of garner an eyeroll for me. Which is why I tried to subvert the standard walking dead super serious zombie apocalypse and go for something sillier. You've stuck to the walking dead formula, which is fine, it's just I've read so many books like this, I own so many books like this, I personally know too many authors who write books like this. So I'm not saying I hate this book, by no means I'm just putting this review in the context that I'm sick of this story playing out haha. I love zombies, a little too much but I'm tired of them being taken so seriously, it kind of destroys the fun of them for me to have them used as just a vehicle for what is essentially an edgey character drama. Not to say your characters, are bad, they're well written, believable characters. I think you go a little too far with the female character, I see a lot of people do this and its something I tried desperately to avoid when I wrote my heroine. You've tried to make her tough but she comes off as a bit of a bitch. She has to be likeable, she can be tough but she still needs to be empathetic and somewhat vulnerable. Even writing a good villain involves making them empathetic, making them likeable enough so their actions matter to the reader. I'm not saying I read enough to really get her down as a character, maybe she gets more three dimensional later in the book, but my initial impression is she's not very likeable. All in all though, it's very well written. I find the walking dead novels, very sticky, the dialogue is very forced. The dialogue in this is superb, very real, flows well. There isn't really a story but that's zombie novels, survival is the story, humanity is the story, so you cant judge it like that. Honestly I think with a little marketting this would do really well on amazon. Best of luck with it."
