Preface

With everything that has been going on recently, I started to wonder, would it be better if we have been told as kids, that life is actually tough but we might have a few good moments, that people could be real evils but we might meet some good ones too, that the world is ugly and its beauty exists in places we do not expect? Maybe this way, we would have struggled less with deception and disappointment, and most importantly, learnt to deeply appreciate the bright sides of life.

I wonder if it would have been better if they had told us that this place is similar to a starry night, where darkness reigns and our job is to accept it at first, then focus on the stars.

I am not really sure if I have found an answer to my questions, nevertheless I really wish that the correct answer is no, for many reasons, starting with the fact that no matter what do I prefer, my opinion won’t change reality. Moreover, I sincerely hope that the ugliness we see today is just a phase which will eventually fade away and that there is some good left in this world, making life worth living after all. So in addition to the starry night, I also choose to look on a whole other part of the day, where the sun shines and the sky is blue.

At the end of the day, it is indeed kind of relieving to know that all this suffer, like every other thing in this world, like the world itself, will ultimately come to an end.

Several things have led me to write this story, which for the records is completely imaginary.

One of the most important topics on which it emphasizes is mental health from a Lebanese perspective. It is no secret that this topic is still seen as a taboo despite the enormous efforts that have been recently made in order to accept mentally ill people and to normalize speaking about this matter.

Like many other diseases, early detection is the key to treatment. Unfortunately, many people in Lebanon, especially parents, still feel socially embarrassed if their kid is diagnosed with a psychiatric illness, making many of them afraid to seek medical care. This story sheds the light on the devastating consequences of this behaviour.

Not only they delay their kid’s treatment, but also reduce his/her chances to get better and end up causing more damage than there initially was.

Just when they believe that they are protecting themselves from society, their kid’s health is being put on the edge as a consequence. So, who is the real winner here?
