Chapter 1: Emily’s POV

“Hey Emily, can you go to the store and get me a carton of milk?” My mother called from the kitchen.

“Sure!” Grabbing five pounds from my savings, I shot out from the front door and instantly teleported myself into the grocery store a few blocks away from my house.

Let’s just start with a brief introduction. My name’s Emily Moon and I’m fifteen this year. I have long wavy brown hair and emerald eyes. (They are my best feature) Basically, I’m a witch, or least some sort of magical creature, but I haven’t told my mother about that yet. My father died on my eighth birthday. The night I discovered my powers. It was truly such a strange coincidence and up to now, there’s still one question hovering in my mind: Did I kill him?

The bell of the store rang as I came in. “Good morning, Emily,” the store owner, Mr Albert, smiled broadly at me. “What can I get for you?”

“Just milk,” I replied and returned his smile. Mr Albert disappeared from the counter for a moment before he came back with a carton of fresh milk clutched in his hands. “Thanks!” He chuckled at my enthusiasm as I handed him the five pounds.

Five minutes later, I walked out of the grocery store. Breathing in the sweet spring air, I decided to walk as I did not want to drop the milk. I hummed to myself as I crossed the zebra crossing on the road. Suddenly, my eyes grew twofold and my breath was snatched away from me as I looked up from the ground.

Standing right in front of me were two boys about seventeen years old. One of them was grinning at me.

He had dirty blonde hair and brown eyes that were looking amused right now. The other boy had slightly darker hair, hidden under a hoodie. His blue eyes were slightly cold and empty. I shivered slightly as his gaze swept through me. He seemed unapproachable. I blushed slightly as both of the boys were very attractive.

“Emily Moon?” asked blondie.

“Y-Yes?” I stammered.

“We’re going to have to take you in.”

“For what crime?” Fear snaked my heart.

“For being too gorgeous,” he winked at me.

I felt my eyebrows furrow in confusion as a slight blush crept on my cheeks.

The darker-haired boy rolled his eyes and elbowed his partner. “Owww!” complained blondie. “Who are you guys?” I took a step back and inquired cautiously. The dark-haired boy stepped forward. “I’m Cameron Jacob and this blondie is Riley Harrison. We both come from Sky Academy and we have been told to bring you there.”

“W-What? No! Is this a prank?” I exclaimed, shocked. I had not heard of a Sky Academy before.

Riley laughed and yawned. “No,sweetheart, you’re not being pranked.” I glared at him.

“You’re mom, Lily, already knows about this. She has already sent all your stuff to Sky Academy,” Cameron added. He frowned at me for a moment, then quickly shook his head to clear his thoughts. “Each and every student at Sky Academy has the ability to control an element. You’re one of them.”

I quickly dialed Mom’s number on my phone. “Hello?” Lily answered. “Mom, do you know about Sky Academy?” “Yes, and I assume you must have met Riley and Cameron by now. I’ll call back later when you reach the academy, but I have to go now. I’m sorry, sweetie. I should have told you sooner.” Those were her last words as she hung up. My eyes widened.

“No! There’s no way that this is real! I can’t go with you guys!” I backed away slightly and found myself in the middle of the zebra crossing. It was either the boys or death. Cameron sighed and glanced at Riley. “This is going to be a very long journey.” Without warning, he leaped at me and pulled me towards him just as a car reached the crossing. I squirmed under his grip but he was too strong. I sighed. It was all up to my powers now. Hissing as Riley jumped on my too, I focused and channeled some energy through my body, making it grow burning hot. “What the—Ow!” Cameron and Riley leaped off me and I quickly scrambled to my feet.

“How-how?” Shock flashed through Riley’s eyes. “She can control her element already!” he glanced at Cameron, who was biting his lip and observing me closely. His lips curved upwards into a heartwarming smile. “Emily, see? You’re one of us.” “I’m not coming with you!” Frustration coursed through my veins. Why couldn’t they just leave me be and allow me to have my own, peaceful life? Cameron’s eyes were filled with sadness. “Cam, don’t! It’s not worth it!” Riley glanced at me, his eyes flashing with panic.

Cameron just sighed, then tilted his head upwards to the sky. All of a sudden, gloomy, heavy clouds swept the fluffy white ones away and took their place. Thunder struck and lightning boomed. However, strangely, there was no rain. As I stared upwards at the sky curiously, Cameron’s eyes suddenly darkened and he stretched out a hand towards me. Lightning shot out of it. I shrieked and dodged it, but Cameron sent another one. I’m sorry, his eyes seemed to say. Anger clasped my body in a tight hold. Summoning up a powerful aqua ball, I shot it at Riley but he deflected it with a ten-foot ice berg. I smiled in realisation. So Cameron’s element was lightning and Riley’s was ice. Interesting.

In revenge, Riley shot an ice beam at me as Cameron sent out another valley of thunderbolts. I raised my hands and created a glowing air shield. “Cam, that’s impossible!” Riley slumped onto the ground in defeat. “She can control more than one element!” “Well then, I can’t defeat her alone!” Cameron shouted back at him through the raging storm. Riley sighed and pulled himself up. He shaped the ice into small needles and regret shining in his brown eyes, threw them at me. Cameron sighed, glanced at me, then shot a huge, thick lightning bolt at me. I raised my shield, but it was too much for me to handle. The needles attacked from the left side while Cameron’s lightning crashed and shook my shield from the other.

Pain shot through my body like fire as I forced myself to hold the shield. I felt exhausted and drained. No, I couldn’t let them take me. As I struggled to hold the shield, Cameron’s lightning suddenly broke through and struck me hard in the chest. I screamed in agony as stars danced at the edge of my vision. The last thing I felt was Cameron catching me.
