Chapter 1
Who wouldn’t dream of visiting the Maldives, a tropical country located in the Indian Ocean with hundreds of tiny scattered island resorts? The Maldives are known as “the tropical paradise” for reasons such as its beauty. This tropical country has separated islands and islands are surrounded by their lagoon. Each island has pure white sandy beaches. There are over five thousand coral reefs and plenty of reef fish, corals, and many other marine lives you could see underwater. Diving in this tropical paradise is memorable, according to people who had the chance to set foot on these exquisite beaches.
I was one of these people who had the chance to travel to the Maldives. I recall the day my best friend called me to come urgently to her workplace and announced that she won a vacation to the Maldives for two people, and she wanted to take me with her, knowing I had a weakness for exotic destinations. Both me and Angelina were jumping up and down in joy at the coffee shop she was working at when she gave me the news. Oh, the looks people were giving us as we let the waves of happiness flow around us. At that moment, I could care less. How could I care what these people thought when I was going to travel to one of my dream destinations?
The pictures on the internet with the islands of Maldives couldn’t compare to the real thing; the sensation of the silky and warm sand underneath my bare feet, the refreshing breeze of the ocean that made my lungs feel like they were reborn, the coconut palm trees that dominated the landscape and the little over-water bungalows making me feel like I stepped into an extraterrestrial world. I loved the way my hip-length silver hair flowed in the tropical breeze. The waters were so clear, but considering how far away we were from polluting sources, plus the waters were pretty shallow near islands, and there was a lot of white sand and brilliant sunshine. This makes it easy to see the clarity of the water. It felt so good to be away from the concrete world of the big cities and the obnoxious traffic.
The Maldives made me feel free, like a bird out of a gilded cage.
Currently, I was enjoying a nice fruity cocktail at the beach bar on one of the high bar stools after a full day of exciting activities, while Angelina was a few feet away dancing with a guy that introduced himself spontaneously. It was only the first day, and we already felt at home here. I couldn’t help but chuckle at how easily Angelina was flirting with men. Considering a few years ago she was such a shy one, barely could form a coherent sentence to a guy she found attractive.
I met Angelina in the first year of college and since then we have been best friends through good and bad. She was studying marketing and management while I indulged deeply in zoology. She was the shy type, while I was a full extrovert with a combusting personality. It was true that the opposite attracts because I and her hit it off from the first time we spoke. Our vibes molded together perfectly, so much that presently, I could say we switched them.
Now she was the bombshell with an easy-to-go attitude, while I preferred to keep to myself after years of being in the fast ignition. Sometimes Angelina would joke that I was getting old, but I couldn’t call myself that, even if the 30s were slowly approaching me, although none would guess that would soon be my age. Angelina said it was because of my petite figure and baby face.
Speaking of her, she waved goodbye to the guy. The music that was filling the atmosphere with positive energy slowed down to a faint tune in the background. Her scarlet curls bounced up and down as she skipped toward me with a big smile on her cherry-red lips.
“Don’t tell me you plan to stay at the bar during this whole beach party.” She said after she ordered a peach cocktail with rum.
“I am just exhausted after this full day. I am taking it slow.” The strawberry and vodka flavor hit my taste buds, and I chuckled.
“Oh, come on. There are plenty of guys here on the beach... and they are pretty damn cute if you ask me.” She whispered with a cheeky smile on her face, making herself comfortable on the bar stool next to mine.
“For example... That guy over there. He’s been looking at you for over 15 minutes.” She whispered in my ear, pointing directly at the guy with brown dreadlocks in a man-bun. I had to admit, he was pretty attractive. He had a nice, athletic physique.
“Yeah... and before that, he has been flirting with two more girls,” I commented, playing with the straw in the fancy cocktail glass, almost bored with just sitting there and observing the beach party.
Angelina chuckled, shaking her head, and turned to rest her back against the bar counter, taking the cocktail the barman had placed in front of her.
“And to think a few years ago, you would have gone over to him without hesitation.” I sighed at the memories of my flirtatious adventures, remembering how open I was with the dating game and the guys that showed interest in me.
“It’s not that I am against dating or hookups now, but I think my taste in men just changed,” I explained, seeing many guys single and ready to mingle tonight but none perked my interest so much to make me get up and go over to them.
“Ohhh... Now you are waiting for your prince charming?” Angelina teased, nudging my shoulder with a suggestive expression. I couldn’t help but laugh at her mannerism.
“Something like that. I just want someone more meaningful. Not just a simple one-time thing that will leave me with a bitter taste.” Angelina’s smile softened, knowing how tremulous my journey with relationships has been in the past.
“I know some guys can be assholes who leave the moment they reach their goals of getting into your pants. You taught me that, but some are true sweethearts. Give it time and you will find the one for you.” She comforted me, wrapping one arm around my shoulder and hugging me.
“Thanks, Angie. You have always been next to me through that time.”
“Anytime... Plus you don’t want to end up all lonely with animals like a crazy broad.” She joked, making me roll my eyes and playfully punch her arm.
“Hey. I am a zoologist. Of course, animals will surround me.”
“Maybe you will find a man who is more animal than human.” Angelina teased, pointing towards two guys who were having an eating contest, stuffing their mouths like starved breasts.
A chorus of laughter left us at the scene, and I nodded. “Yeah. For sure, some are more animal than me.” I said with a grin, continuing to enjoy my drink and this beautiful tropical night full of life.
Relaxation, that’s what I’ve been craving after years of having my face buried into piles of books and studying nights that I lost count of. Animals have always fascinated me, and that’s the reason why I followed the path of zoology. Easy? Surely not! But I loved a challenge and working hard for my goals, plus the fascination kept my motivation going to learn more. The most distinguishing of the departments was the aquatic life, especially when under the water. Snorkeling and scuba diving were other passions of mine.
Speaking of scuba diving...
“I meant to ask, do you want to go scuba diving tomorrow in the morning after breakfast?” I asked Angelina, who gave me a sad smile.
“I would love to, but the guy I have been dancing with had invited me tomorrow for SPA. If you want, I can cancel it and we can go.”
“No, no. It’s alright. I don’t want to hold you back from a possible romance in the Maldives. We came together for the vacation, but we don’t have to be like twins.” I assured her, knowing how hard it was for her before getting a guy to talk to her and seeing how confident and adventurous she was now, I couldn’t be selfish and hold her back.
“Thank you, Cleo. You are like a sister to me.” She beamed, giving me these puppy dog eyes, and I returned it with a cute pout, making silly faces at each other.
“So? On another level, how is work going at the museum? Any luck in getting to the high leading position of the zoology department?” This topic of discussion made the smile on my face drop a little, and I naturally shrugged, taking a substantial gulp of my strawberry cocktail.
“I am still in the waiting line for that open position but being a tour guide, too. I have time to be a curator.” There was a slight tremble in my voice, and my red-haired best friend knew when I was lying through my teeth.
“Doesn’t sound like you’re all satisfied.” Angelina arched a perfectly trimmed eyebrow and clicked her tongue at the nervous chuckle that passed from between my lips, before I sighed in defeat, knowing she will dissect me to pull the truth out.
“Alright, fine!” I gave up. “Maybe I am a little disappointed, but it’s better than nothing at all.”
“Cleo. You had studied zoology and wildlife biology, getting that bachelor’s degree, and I know it wasn’t easy, plus you continued and got the master’s degree. You cannot tell me that it’s all good being just a simple tour guide.” It was unbelievable how Angelina morphed from a shuttering girl to a well-spoken woman who put her point straight. My personality had rubbed a lot on her.
“It’s not that easy, Angie. To get to higher positions, you kind of need to hold important relationships and have connections. You know that considering you’re now the manager of a coffee shop, and you went through this obstacle.” Even though I had calmed down in these past few years, and I wasn’t as combusting as before, I still held that blistering flame.
Angelina’s forest green eyes softened, seeing that familiar sharpness in my eyes and the fire that coated my tongue. She had witnessed before what my temper could do if someone provoked me. College life had taught me to control my emotions better and handle my spirit with a wiser approach.
“I am aware how shitty work life can be when people put more value on relations rather than the capacity and skills of their people.” She grumbled, crossing her arms over her chest, probably remembering the times she had to deal with someone’s important relative who did not know their work domain.
“That’s what I am saying. The owner of the museum wants to put his son in the curator’s position, even though the current curator who will retire had taught me everything.” The frustration coated my form, and my shoulders were stiff from how all this process turned out to be. Very unfair.
“What?? That’s some big bullshit.” Angelina’s eyes widened, and a grimace crossed her face at the information I gave her about how the inside world of a museum works.
“Yeah... anyway! I don’t want to talk about work, especially when we are here in this big paradise, away from the chaos of the city. Maybe I will move one day somewhere else where I can start anew and do some research work on zoology, not stay cramped in a big building.”
My friend chuckled, patting my back. “You will do that. I know you can, plus an inside job doesn’t suit you. Your wild soul is made for the outside world, around nature, not surrounded by paperwork and nosy people with photo cameras. You’re like a female version of Tarzan.”
We both laughed at the last remark, and I narrowed my eyes at her in a lighthearted manner. “Are you implying I lived among monkeys, coffee-up?” I teased back.
“Well, hello, ladies.”
I and Angelina turned our heads in the direction of the voice, only to see Mark, a chatty guy we had met on the flight to the Maldives, and one of Angelina’s former classmates from college. I mentally chuckled at the excitement on his face when he saw us, and more so Angelina. She told me about the crush he had on her since they got aquatinted in college, and from the looks of it, he still had some attraction for my red-haired friend.
“Oh, hello, Mark.” Angelina greeted him with a smile, offering him a seat next to her, which he quickly occupied.
“How’s the first day in the Maldives for you girls?” He asked, ordering a cold beer.
“Peachy. What about you? Seen anything eye-catching here?” Angelina was fast to chat with Mark, who smirked at her inquiry.
“She’s sitting right next to me.” He replied with a wink, making Angelina snort, but alas smile. They both had a flirty nature.
“Always a charmer.” The redhead added, sipping on her cocktail languidly.
“You know it, dear, but seriously now. I was a little worried for you girls because people had reported sights of sharks close to the shore, but the security of the island didn’t find anything.” Mark’s lighthearted voice turned serious, and the worry could be read on his face.
“Maybe they saw dolphins?” Angelina supposed.
“Sharks will come as close to shore as they can if it means they get a good meal out of it. But they are the most active at dusk and dawn when they are hunting for food.” I informed Angelina and Mark.
“These people saw the sharks in the full day. How do you explain that?” Mark said, taking the first gulp of his beer.
“Sharks may swim ashore for a variety of reasons. The quest for prey is one of the key motivations for these predators to approach the coast. Since the water near the shore is shallow, more opportunities are there to catch suitable prey. Sharks are also attracted to the warm temperature of the water near the shore. They are, after all, wild animals and unpredictable.” My voice turned professional and stern as I listed the motives, knowing how people were when it came to the wildlife, thinking they could do whatever they wanted.
“Damn. We are lucky there were no attacks.” Mark commented, leaning his forearms on the bar counter. Angelina turned towards me with a worried look.
“Please be careful tomorrow if you go scuba diving.” She told me, putting one hand over mine. I smiled assuringly and nodded.
“Don’t worry. I will be fine, plus if there will be a sign of sharks, I am sure they will close the beach.”
“They saw the sharks lurking this morning and ever since they had patrolled the waters and there were no more. It’s so weird.” Mark informed us. Angelina sighed, rubbing her forehead, then looked back at me.
“Just be careful, alright?”
“I will. Don’t worry.” I replied, pulling her into a tight hug, appreciating how watchful she was over me, and to think the roles were reversed back when we had met in college.
The rest of the night, the three of us spent the time on the beach, drinking and dancing. Overall, it was a good time, and all worries about life back in the big city vanished. Angelina and Mark had too much to drink, judging by how they were grinding to the beat of the music on the smooth sands of the beach. Meanwhile, I had finished my last cocktail and felt the exhaustion of the flight, and activities, since I got here, hit me hard.
Yawning, I rubbed the back of my neck, feeling how stiff I was. Sleep was calling me like a sweet siren song and my eyelids got heavier with each passing second. Plus, the alcohol in my system highlighted everything.
Walking over to my intoxicated friends, I leaned closer to Angelina so she could hear me over the loud beat of the music.
“Hey! I think I will call it a night! I am pretty tired.” I yelled in her ear. “Will you be fine on your own?”
“Don’t worry! I will watch over her.” Mark assured me with a thumbs up, a goofy grin on his face as his other arm was wrapped around my friend’s waist.
“Alright, you two! Just stay safe.” I laughed at them, before walking away towards the water villas where I was accommodated, and I and Angelina decided to get separate villas, mostly in case we would hook up on this exotic trip. Her words, not mine. Angelina’s villa was at the beginning of the long deck, while mine was right at the end. She didn’t want to have too deep water around her while I was all down to be at the end where the water was deeper; not with much, but it was a difference.
Walking down the deck that lead towards my private chambers for the vacation, I stretched my arms above my head, skipping happily, looking forward to taking a shower and sleeping on the king-sized bed that waited for me. The best advances of this trip that Angelina won are the luxurious accommodation conditions. We had housings on the VIP water villas with private infinity pools, sun decks, over-water hammocks, and outdoor beds. That meant we wouldn’t have to deal with nosy neighbors that would look at us.
Just the thought of being lulled to sleep by the sound of waves beneath my bed tickled my fancy. Reaching my villa, I couldn’t help the immense smile that stretched across my face as I entered my palace for this dreamy journey. The first thing I did was do straight to the private deck, gazing at the lavish night scenario of the Indian Ocean before me. The air is warm, yet fresh, the breeze is soft, and the elegant over-water villa is so beautiful that it erases any prior worries. I had so much to do these two weeks that I will be staying here in the Maldives.
I could cool off with a dip in my bungalow’s plunge pool, read a book on the over-water hammock, and fall asleep on the private deck after being lulled by the gentle lapping of waves.
One of the best parts is the outdoor shower, which makes it easy to enjoy the view as I rinse the salt off my skin, while the glass-paneled floor ensures the fish are with me even when I am inside the suite. My eyes closed for a brisk moment, enjoying everything surrounding me, knowing that the moment I will be back in the concrete world of pollution, I will yearn to come back here.
The moment when I started college and studying wildlife, I imagined myself years later surrounded by the beauty of nature; peaceful yet unpredictable, with inoffensive creatures and vicious predators lurking around. A sad sigh left my lips as I sat down on the deck, gazing at the reflection of the moon in the shallow waters surrounding my temporary home. The reality was so hard to swallow, much like shreds of glass. Fantastic moments like this are like rich green leaves that at some point will turn to amber from the autumn days and finally fall and vanish in the wicked winter. Just the thought alone that in two weeks I will be back in the condescending city with the museum’s snobbish staff had me cry out in frustration in my overthinking mind.
The call of a change was right underneath the surface of my nervous system, but what change could I make? Pulling my long hair out of my messy ponytail, I let my steel-colored locks fly behind me in the gentle wind of the ocean.
Maybe a miracle will happen.
I almost snorted at that sentence. This is reality, not a fantasy novel with endless possibilities and a happy ending. A few more minutes passed as I lay on the deck, the smooth wood still warm from the sun’s rays that had blasted upon this wonderland the whole day.
Having this whole intimacy with none around, I undressed, pulling my white tank top off my body, followed by the baby blue shorts. My fingers grasped the strings of my black bikini, undoing the knots. The skimpy material fell onto the deck, my stark body all bare in the night. All lights were turned off, leaving the moon as the only source of light.
After I removed all my clothes, I stepped into the outside shower, my bare feet touching the floor glass underneath, and I wasted no time turning the water on. Closing my eyes, I basked in the lukewarm spray of the shower, making my sweaty skin tingle. The sensation of the shower spraying over my skin after a whole day of staying in the sun felt like an ultimate extravagance, something I couldn’t have back in my cramped apartment home.
Grabbing the bottle of shampoo from the shelf of the shower, I squeezed the translucent liquid in my hand and proceeded to wash my hair after being exposed to chlorine and saltwater. The fragrance of coconut, vanilla, and jasmine filled the shower space and covered my senses with waves of tranquility. After rinsing my hair and conditioning it properly, I continued with my body, putting shower gel over my blue sponge flower and gently scrubbing my sensitive skin, starting from my neck, down to my shoulders, arms, and chest.
While the sponge tickled my dark nipples, making them perk up, my free hand couldn’t help, but move down my body, passing the belly button piercing and reaching my naval, closing to my freshly shaved pussy, feeling the ring piercing of my hood. The first brush of fingertips over my clit had me part my lips, letting a soft sigh of contentment resound in the night. The only sounds were the ones of the ocean and the music from the party echoing from far away. Everyone was probably partying till sunrise, while I basked in the carnal needs that whispered in my ear to continue.
I allowed myself to give into my basic desires. After weeks of no self-satisfaction, my fingers had a mind of their own, rubbing up and down my smooth folds, and tracing my clit in lazy circles. I felt the pleasure race through my body after weeks of professional frustration and lonely nights without anyone holding me. When was the last time I’d been with a man? It was so ironic, considering how active I was in the first year of college. Now? I felt like a nun who found out for the first time in her life how satisfactory touching myself could be.
Images of a masculine form morphed into my mind. Someone twice or more my size with big hands to grab me by the hips and pull my body flush to his rock-hard one. His touches, passionate and tender, but turning rougher and animalistic as lust, would cloud his mind. A moan passed from between my lips as my finger worked faster over my clit, adding more pressure on the bundle of nerves as the tight tension in my belly grew.
My fantasy grew more, and I imagined how his mouth would feel over my pussy. I forgot how it feels like to be eaten out, to be devoured in the most obscene ways possible, turned into a puddle of sweat and wanton moans.
One of my fingers brushed across the slit from behind my silky folds, massaging my entrance, and felt the slickness slip out of me; warm and sticky. The shower room filled with brief noises of ecstasy, and when I inserted my finger inside my cunt, I thought my legs would give out from under me. Slowly, I dropped myself to my knees, one hand resting on the shower wall in front of me, the other hand working between my legs. My thoughts shut down in favor of seeking a hard and toe-curling climax, leaving the sponge flower on the glass floor.
A second finger was added, adding to the stretch, and the fire that bubbled into my veins seemed to boil, as did the pace of my fingers. The thrusts of my digits became feverish, doing everything to highlight the pressure I felt in my core. The pads of my fingertips ran over the velvet walls of my pussy, before the two fingers moved into a scissoring motion. It wasn’t enough to achieve that mind-numbing feeling, not even when the heel of my hand pressed over my clit.
A whine of frustration left me. My brows pulled into a deep frown of concentration before my fingers pulled out of my pussy. In a last-minute hope, I grabbed the flexible showerhead and moved it between my legs. The moment the spray of water hit my clit, my mouth opened wide, letting moans after moans echo through the night. It felt like a million fishes were kissing my little rosebud, which throbbed from the hard pressure of the water.
The hand that wasn’t holding the showerhead moved to part my outer labia, exposing my entrance, then angled the showerhead for the spray of water to hit my pink flesh. A lustful grin formed on my face as that lavish pressure in my abdomen increased, so much that I had to rest my forehead on the glass wall of the shower space. It wasn’t long before my hips pressed lower so that the showerhead was flush between my legs. Everything seemed to shut down because I couldn’t even hear the noises I was making, which were probably downright scandalous. Oh, the bliss of having solitude and engaging in sexual acts without fear of being seen or heard.
After a few more intensive minutes, the crashing wave of euphoria hit my nerves, tightening the muscles in my legs and core. My eyes rolled in the back of my head as I felt my clit throb and my walls constrict around nothing, squirting hard over the glass floor for the first time in weeks.
As I lay there under the spray of the water, leaning on the edge of the shower, catching my breath, and waiting for my pulse rate to drop, all the tightness in my body evaporated, and the sensation of melting seized me. After settling down from the tremendous orgasm, I opened my eyes and completed scrubbing my body with shaking motions, then walked out, drying my wet body with a towel from the lounge chair on the deck.
Running my fingers through my wet hair, I felt how my eyelids got heavier and how sleep continued to persist. Not even bothering to put any clothes on, I walked inside the villa. The spacious bed with pristine white bedsheets and fluffy pillows had me purring. When I reached the edge of the bed, I let my body fall on the mattress, and my hands reached for one of the pillows, putting it underneath my head.
It just took a few seconds for my body to shut down and my eyelids to close, enveloping me in a warm cocoon of slumber while listening to the ocean’s lullaby.
