Chapter 1
Jamie Edwards couldn’t believe that her girlfriend, PJ Thomas, was going to school with her at Western Kentucky University. She hated leaving their hometown of Brackenburg, knowing she would only get to see PJ when she was home on break from college. But now, PJ is here and going to be on campus.
They hadn’t had a chance to talk after PJ surprised Jamie by walking up to her on campus because they both had to go to class. Jamie was just so excited that PJ was here. They were going to go to the Downing Building after their classes today. The food court was located there so that they would have dinner together. She didn’t have to be back at her dorm until ten, so she was hoping PJ would be able to visit with her all evening. She could probably have PJ come to her dorm room, but Jamie’s roommate was conservative Christian. She would probably freak out if she came in and caught PJ and Jamie kissing. And Jamie couldn’t wait to kiss PJ.
Since they hadn’t had time to talk, Jamie didn’t know where PJ was living. Wouldn’t it be wild if they were in the same dorm building? Jamie’s train of thought stopped in its tracks. She would definitely have to see about getting a different roommate if that were the case. There was no way PJ and she could live in the same building and not be together as much as possible. Jamie’s roommate would definitely freak out about that.
Her roommate, Clara Waller, was already being a bitch. She’d moved her stuff into their room long before Jamie got there and picked her side of the room. Even though it hadn’t made any difference to Jamie which side she got. They were exactly the same.
Clara’s side of the room was decorated in pink and white, with a large picture of Jesus hung on the wall above the bed. Jamie thought that was just weird. The first few nights she’d slept there, she’d woke up in a panic thinking some man was in her room because when she opened her eyes in the dark, Jesus seemed to be staring right at her.
Jamie had chosen subtle shades of brown and green because they made her think of PJ’s hazel eyes. She had put up the picture PJ had painted for her and some of PJ’s other drawings that Jamie loved. When Clara had asked about the artist, Jamie had struggled with the words to describe whom PJ was to her without alienating the person she had to share a room with for the next four months. She said, “A friend of mine I went to high school with created them.”
Jamie had not been excited about living in the all-female dorm. Not because she wanted to be in a building with boys, but because it was such a drab building. The co-ed one for freshmen wasn’t any better. The rooms were tiny, and everyone on the floor shared a bathroom. It was a huge adjustment for Jamie. Her bedroom at home was bigger than the entire dorm room, and she had her own bathroom. Sharing the bathroom with all the other girls on her floor wasn’t a big deal because she was used to showering with other girls in the locker room after cheerleading practice. But, it was different sharing a bathroom with strangers. Thankfully, Jamie had always been an early riser. Now, she got up at five every morning and got her shower first, regardless of when her classes started.
Because freshmen coming to the university from other towns were required to live on campus their first year, Jamie assumed that PJ would be living in a dorm. If she wasn’t living in the Tower where Jamie was staying, she had to be a Poland Hall. As far as Jamie knew, those were the only two dorms that allowed freshmen.
Smiling happily, Jamie opened the front door of the science building where her chemistry class was being taught. It didn’t matter where PJ was living. All that mattered was that they were in Bowling Green together and on the same campus. They would be able to see each other all the time.
