Prologue
"Ever heard of the red string of fate?" He asked me.
I shook my head. "What that?" I asked curiously.
"It's an invisible red cord wrapped around the pinky finger of those that are destined to meet each other as they are 'their one true love'. They are destined lovers, regardless of place, time, or circumstances." He explained. "It's what I used to find you." He finished.
I looked down at my hands inspecting my pinky fingers. I frowned. "I don't see any red string." I looked at his hand too. "And you don't have one either."
He laughed giving me a flick on my forehead. "It's invisible. Remember?" He said which confused me more as I pressed my palm to my aching forehead.
"Then why can you see it?" I asked with a pout. It wasn't fair he could see it and I couldn't.
He smiled like he knew something that I didn't. "I just can." Was his simple answer. "I went through a lot to find you." He added still smiling at me.
"Can it cut?" I asked
"Not usually. Unless... one of us does something unforgivable to the other." He paused. "But that won't happen." He assured me.
I stared into his grey eyes. "So..." I found myself playing with the hem of my emerald green tutu and my white pantyhose clad toes were curling up against each other. "... does that mean we're soulmates? We're going to get married?" I asked in a small shy voice.
I still couldn't believe the best dancer in junior ballet and prettiest boy in our class had become best friend. And now he's saying he liked me?
That's what he's saying right?
He laughed a little and tucked a stray lock of my curly red hair that had escaped my bun behind my ear. "Do you want to marry me?" He asked.
I thought about it. "Maybe." I answered. "But my mom won't let me." I couldn't hide the sadness in my voice.
"That's why you need the yellow string." He stated.
I was puzzled. "There's a yellow string too? Do we also have one?" I asked.
"We do but, it's not connected. It's a string of luck. And luck is personal. Your's is really small. It's just wrapped around your pointer finger like a ring." He explained staring at my right hand. I looked too. But I really couldn't see anything.
"A ring?" I furrowed my brows. "Isn't that really small?" I asked worriedly.
"Yeah. It is. That's why you have to steal another one." He said in a low voice.
My eyes widened. "Steal?" I said in an incredulous voice.
"Yes." He confirmed. "You have to get it from... "
I woke up with a start in a cold sweat. Goosebumps were all over my body.
"What a nightmare." I muttered to myself as the contents of the memory dream replayed in my head.
I got up to get ready for school.
