Chapter 1: LA Burnout
The sun had barely risen over the Hollywood Hills, but Samantha “Sam” Collins was already wide awake, her mind racing with a familiar anxiety. She sat cross-legged on her plush ivory sofa, absently scrolling through her Instagram feed as the morning light filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows of her stylish Los Angeles apartment. From the outside, her life appeared picture-perfect – a luxury high-rise home, a wardrobe that could make any fashionista green with envy, and a social media following that most influencers would kill for.
Yet, beneath the carefully curated façade, Sam felt utterly hollow.
With a frustrated sigh, she tossed her phone aside and ran her fingers through her tousled chestnut locks. Her eyes drifted towards the framed photos adorning the minimalist shelves, each one a frozen moment from a life that no longer resembled her own. There she was, beaming and bronzed, arm-in-arm with her ex-husband, Tyler, as they posed in front of the Eiffel Tower. Another shot captured her laughing carefree on a yacht in the Mediterranean, the envy of her thousands of followers.
Those days seemed like a lifetime ago.
“What happened to us, Ty?” she whispered, her voice barely audible.
The divorce had been messy and emotionally draining, leaving Sam questioning everything she thought she knew about love and happiness. Tyler’s confession of infidelity had shattered the carefully constructed illusion of their perfect life, sending her into a tailspin of self-doubt and resentment.
Desperate for a change of scenery, Sam had impulsively booked a solo hiking tour in New Zealand’s Southern Alps. It was a stark contrast from her usual luxury getaways, but something about the rugged beauty of the glaciers and mountains called to her in a way she couldn’t quite explain. Perhaps it was the promise of solitude, a chance to escape the constant pressure of maintaining her online persona.
With a deep breath, Sam rose from the couch and made her way to the floor-to-ceiling windows, gazing out at the city skyline. Los Angeles had once been her playground, a canvas upon which she could paint the life of her dreams. Now, it felt like a gilded cage, trapping her in a cycle of superficiality and emptiness.
“Time for a change,” she murmured, her hazel eyes gleaming with a newfound determination.
Turning away from the cityscape, Sam retrieved her phone and began tapping out a message to her assistant, Jasmine.
“Hey, Jas. I need you to clear my schedule for the next two weeks. I’m going off the grid.”
She hit send before she could second-guess herself, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips. For the first time in months, she felt a flicker of excitement, a hint of the adventurous spirit that had once defined her.
As she began packing her bags, Sam couldn’t help but wonder what awaited her in the untamed wilderness of New Zealand. Would this journey be the fresh start she so desperately craved, or would the ghosts of her past continue to haunt her, even on the other side of the world?
Only time would tell.
