Chapter 1

During a night cloaked in silence, the moon is a mere sliver in the starless sky. The air is thick with tension, the only sound the rustling of leaves as a group of shadowy figures approaches a secluded home nestled deep in the woods. Inside, a toddler sleeps peacefully, her soft breaths a gentle rhythm in the quiet house. Her parents, unaware of the lurking danger, rest in a nearby room, lost in dreams of a future with their beloved child. Suddenly, the stillness shatters. A low growl cuts through the night, the signal for the attack. The figures move with supernatural speed and precision, their eyes glinting with purpose.

Before the parents can react, the intruders are upon them. In mere moments, the baby is in their arms, and they disappear into the night as quickly as they came, leaving behind a trail of chaos and a family torn apart by a mysterious and sinister force.

Skye

Eighteen Years Later…

Skye is attending a formal party with Sebastian. She clings onto him nervously, watching as he mingles with everyone. “Skylar,” he whispers, “could you loosen your grip?”

“S…sorry,” she mumbles, loosening her grip on his arm.

“You’re doing great, my love.”

“How long do we have to stay here?”

“Not much longer, I promise.”

As the party unfolds, Skye feels a familiar yet unexplainable pull towards two enigmatic guests. Their eyes seem to follow her every move, yet they keep a respectful distance. The air is thick with intrigue as whispers and glances are exchanged. Skye continuously glances over at them, when they aren’t looking, confusion displayed on her face.

Sebastian notices the subtle dance of curiosity and caution in Skye’s eyes. He holds her close, comforting her with soft whispers. “Skylar, why are you glancing over at those people?” he asks.

“They’re s…staring at me,” she whispers, “it’s making me uncomfortable.”

“Stay here, I’ll be right back.”

Sebastian

Sebastian strides over to the couple. “Excuse me?” he asks, “Why are you staring at my girlfriend? You’re making her uncomfortable.”

The couple seems startled by his presence. “Sorry,” the man answers, “we…we’ve never met anyone else with eyes like hers.”

“What do you mean?” The woman looks up, revealing her eyes, one blue and one green. Sebastian is taken aback. He scurries back over to Skye. “Skye,” he whispers, “that woman…she has…her eyes they’re like yours.”

Skye seems troubled. “W…what? Let me see!” she exclaims.

He leads her over to the couple. “Excuse me,” he says, “will you show your eyes to her?”

The woman looks at Skye, her face paling when she sees her. “I’ve never met someone with eyes like mine,” Skye whispers.

“Erm…” the woman answers, “what about your parents? Do they…”

Sebastian watches as Skye’s expression breaks. “N…no, I don’t remember my parents.”

The woman exchanges a glance with her husband. “Our daughter had eyes like yours,” she states softly, “one blue, one green. I miss seeing her every day.”

Skye’s heart skips a beat at the mention of the woman’s daughter. She feels an inexplicable connection, a tug at the edge of her memory. With a mix of curiosity and an unspoken hope, she asks, “Do you have a picture of her?” Her voice carries a tremor of emotion, betraying her usual composure. The air is charged with the possibility of truths about to be uncovered.

The woman reaches into her purse, fingers trembling slightly, and slowly pulls out a worn photograph. As she hands it to Skye, their eyes lock, an unspoken understanding passing between them. “This is the only picture I have left of my daughter. She was just a toddler when…” The woman’s voice trails off, heavy with years of grief and longing.

As Skye looks down at the image, she sees a young girl of around 2 or 3 years old, with the same striking dual-colored eyes as her own. Her breath catches in her throat, a flicker of recognition sparking within her. “This...this looks like me,” she whispers, her fingers tracing the worn edges of the photograph. She lifts her gaze to meet the woman’s, silently pleading for answers.

The woman’s eyes are filled with a mix of hope and fear as she replies, “I’ve always believed that if I just kept looking, I’d find her one day. And here you are, with those same eyes…” Her voice is a whisper of awe and disbelief, the words hanging in the air between them.

“Y…you…is it really…you?” Skye asks, her voice barely above a whisper. The woman nods, tears brimming in her eyes, as she takes Skye’s hands in her own.

“Yes, I think it is you. I’ve searched for so long…” she says, the sentence trailing off as if she’s afraid to hope. She starts to recount memories of Skye as a little girl, sharing stories and photographs she’s kept. Skye listens, a whirlwind of emotions playing across her face as she begins to piece together the puzzle of her past.

As they talk, it becomes clear that there are still challenges ahead. There might be questions about why Skye was separated from her family, and there may be others who are not ready to accept this reunion. But for now, they have this moment, a fragile bridge reconnecting them across time and circumstance.

Sebastian stands quietly aside, watching as Skye reunites with her parents. Eventually, she looks over at him, looking uncertain. “S…Sebby,” she whispers, “come here.” He allows her to pull him closer to her.

“Alpha Sebastian,” the man says, his eyes narrowing, “nice to see you again. Why is she clinging onto you like that?”

He blushes. “She’s my mate,” he answers. He glances over at her, noticing that she still seems troubled. “Skylar, what’s wrong?”

“W…what if they aren’t…” she whispers, so softly her voice is barely audible, “what if they aren’t my parents?”

“Shh, we can conduct a paternity and maternity test once we’re back home, okay?” he murmurs softly to her.

Her eyes widen in response. “There are tests like that?”

“Yes, there are.” She leans into him, fatigue suddenly taking over her body. “Baby, are you okay?”

She nods her head. “Just tired.”

He laughs softly. “Let’s go home. You’ve had a big night.”

“Hmm, home…” He turns to the couple. “Would you accompany us back to our pack so that we can get those tests done?”

“Of course,” the woman answers.

“How should I address you two?”

“He’s Lucian, and I’m Morgana.”

“Follow me. Our pack isn’t far from here by car.” They leave the party and head home, with Lucian and Morgana following behind them.

Skye

Skye is silent on the drive home, her thoughts jumbled inside her head. “Are they really my parents?” she wanders, “Winter, are you able to tell if they’re our parents or not?”

“Their wolves are calling out to me,” Winter answers, sounding unsure, “I’m not sure.”

“What if they are? What should I do?”

“We’ll figure it out together.”

“Thanks, Winter.”

When they arrive at the pack hospital, Sebastian helps her out of the car. “W…we’re getting the tests done now?” she whispers.

“Yes,” Sebastian answers, “the sooner you know the better, right?” She nods, clasping onto his hand.

They head into the hospital, where Dr. Graylen is waiting for them in the lobby. “Follow me, please,” she says, guiding them into an empty examination room.

“What are you going to do?” Skye asks, softly.

“Swab the inside of your cheek.”

“T…that’s it?”

“Yep, that’s it.”

“How long will it take for the results to come back?”

“A few days at most.”

“O….okay…”

Dr. Graylen gently swabs the inside of her cheek before moving onto Lucian and Morgana. “They’re all done for now.”

“S…Sebby, could we go home?” Skye whispers.

“Yes, of course,” he answers, “Skylar, is it okay if they stay with us for the next few days?”

She pales. “I…erm…I don’t know.”

“It’ll give you the chance to get to know them.”

“O…okay, as long as you’re there.”

“Alright, come on.” He takes her hand, guiding back to their car.

When they get home, their children greet them. “Mama!” Gray and Theo state, “You’re home!”

“Y…yes, we’re home,” she murmurs, looking a bit ill.

“Go and lay down, Skye,” Sebastian says, “You don’t look well.”

“B…but…”

“Alice and I will take care of our kids, don’t worry. I’ll wake you up if anything urgent happens.” She sighs, nodding at him before laying down on the couch.
