Chapter 1 - Never Fully Confess

Raine

It was a quiet morning, the kind where the world outside seemed to hold its breath in reverence for the tranquility inside. Harry’s arm was draped over me, his warmth seeping into my bones as we lay in bed. I could hear the rhythmic ticking of the clock on the wall, each second a reminder of how blessed we were to be here, in our own home, our little haven.

We had just gotten engaged, and the ring on my finger glinted in the soft morning light. I twisted it absentmindedly, a nervous habit I developed since Harry slipped it onto my finger. I should have been the happiest woman in the world. And I was. Most of the time.

Harry’s lips brushed against my shoulder, sending a shiver down my spine. His kisses trailed up to my neck, soft and loving, and I felt the familiar knot of panic tighten in my chest. I tried to focus on the sensation of his touch, the love behind it, but my mind was already slipping away, back into the darkness that had haunted me for years.

“Raine,” he whispered against my skin, his voice laced with a mixture of desire and tenderness. “I love you.”

I pulled away, the movement sharp and involuntary. His touch had become too much, too intense. The panic surged, my breath catching in my throat as I tried to steady myself. Harry sighed softly, his frustration palpable, but he kept his voice calm.

“Raine, what’s going on?” he asked, his hand resting gently on my arm. “You’re hot and cold all the time. One minute you’re all over me, and the next you’re pushing me away. Talk to me.”

I swallowed hard, my eyes fixed on the ceiling. I knew this conversation was coming. It had been building for months, years even. But the words were stuck, tangled in the web of my past that I had never fully untangled.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered, my voice barely audible. “It’s not you, Harry. It’s...it’s me.”

He shifted closer, his arm sliding around my waist, pulling me into his embrace. I could feel his heart beating steadily against my back, a stark contrast to the erratic pounding of my own.

“Raine, I love you. But I can’t keep doing this. I need to understand what’s going on. Why do you keep pulling away from me?”

Tears welled up in my eyes, and I blinked them away furiously. I hated crying. Hated the weakness it made me feel. But I couldn’t hold it back any longer.

“I have a past, Harry,” I began, my voice trembling. “A dark one. Darker than you can imagine.”

He was silent, waiting, his patience unwavering. I took a deep breath, the words spilling out before I could stop them.

“When I was younger...before I met you...something happened. Something terrible. I’ve never told anyone the full truth. Not even my mom.”

His grip tightened around me, a silent encouragement to continue. I closed my eyes, the memories flooding back, vivid and painful.

“There was a man,” I said, my voice cracking. “He...he hurt me, Harry. In ways I can’t even describe. He made me feel worthless, dirty. And even though it’s been years, I can’t shake it. Sometimes I want to feel close to you, to feel your love. But other times, it’s like I’m back there, with him, and I can’t stand to be touched.”

Harry’s breath hitched, and I felt his tears on my skin. He turned me around to face him, his eyes filled with pain and love.

“Raine, I’m so sorry. I had no idea. Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I was scared,” I admitted, my voice breaking. “Scared you’d see me differently. Scared you’d leave.”

“Never,” he said fiercely, pulling me into a tight embrace. “I love you, Raine. All of you. We’ll get through this together. I promise.”

For the first time, I allowed myself to believe him. To believe that maybe, just maybe, I could let go of the darkness and step into the light with Harry by my side. And as I lay there in his arms, I felt a glimmer of hope. A hope that we could rebuild, stronger and more in love than ever before. Feeling his steady breaths as my mind wandered. I still couldn’t believe I had finally told someone about my past, about the nightmare that had haunted me for over a decade. The weight of that secret had been suffocating, and now, having shared it, I felt both exposed and a strange sense of relief.

Harry’s embrace was warm and reassuring, but my thoughts kept drifting back to that night. I was 13, just walking home from my friend’s house. The flashbacks were relentless—blood, screaming, the brutal assault that shattered my innocence. The truth of what happened that night was something I could never fully reveal. It could ruin me, could land me in prison for life. The fear of that truth coming out had kept me silent for so long.

Harry stirred beside me, breaking into my thoughts. He looked at me with concern. “Are you okay, babe?”

I forced a smile, not wanting him to see the darkness in my mind. “Yeah, I’m fine. Just thinking about things.”

He kissed my forehead gently. “You know, you can always talk to me. About anything.”

I nodded, appreciating his words but knowing some things were too dangerous to share. “I know, sweet. Thank you.”

He sighed and glanced at the clock. “I have to get up for work.”

As he got out of bed, I watched him, trying to keep the facade of normalcy. “I’ll make us some coffee,” I offered, hoping to distract myself from the lingering memories.

He smiled, that comforting smile that made me feel safe, even if only temporarily. “That sounds perfect.”

As he left the room, I took a deep breath, trying to anchor myself in the present. The weight of my secret was still there, but telling Harry was a step forward. Maybe, just maybe, it was the beginning of healing. But for now, I had to keep moving forward, one day at a time. Just like I always did.

I sat at our kitchen table, the early morning sun casting a gentle glow across the room. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air, mingling with the fragrance of blooming flowers from our garden just beyond the window. Harry sat across from me, his eyes distant as he looked out into the yard, a thoughtful expression etched on his face. It was a look I had come to recognize—a look that suggested he was lost in his own world, planning, dreaming, always a step ahead.

I sipped my coffee slowly, savoring the warmth that spread through me. Despite the peace of the moment, a familiar pang of guilt gnawed at the edges of my mind. Harry had always been incredibly understanding about my intimacy issues, stemming from a past I often wished I could forget. He never pressured me, never made me feel less than whole. He was my rock, my constant, and yet, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was somehow failing him.

"Hey, Earth to Raine," Harry's voice broke through my thoughts. I blinked and looked up to find him smiling at me, his blue eyes twinkling with amusement.

"Sorry," I murmured, returning his smile. "Just lost in my thoughts."

"Anything you want to share?" he asked, his tone gentle yet curious. He reached across the table, his hand warm and reassuring as it enveloped mine.

I hesitated, the words bubbling up inside me, but I wasn't sure how to start. I dont tbink i coild ever tell him the full reason, my real truth. My gaze drifted back to the window, to the garden that Harry had spent countless hours cultivating. It was his sanctuary, a place where he found solace and joy. Much like he was for me.

"I was thinking about us," I finally said, my voice barely above a whisper. "And how amazing you are. How patient you've been."

Harry's expression softened, and he squeezed my hand gently. "Raine, you don't have to thank me for loving you. That's the easiest thing in the world."

A lump formed in my throat, and I swallowed hard, fighting back the tears that threatened to spill. "It's just... sometimes I feel like I'm holding you back. Like you deserve more than what I can give you."

He leaned forward, his eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my heart ache. "Raine, don't ever think that. You are everything I want, everything I need. It’s always been you. Always. We're in this together, okay? No matter what."

I nodded, the weight of his words slowly sinking in. There was a sincerity in his voice that left no room for doubt. He meant every word, and I believed him. Still, the lingering shadows of my past were hard to shake.

"Do you ever... wonder if things could be different?" I asked, my voice trembling slightly.

Harry leaned back in his chair, his gaze never wavering. "I don't wonder about what could be different, because I can't imagine my life any other way. You're my future, Raine. And whatever we have to face, we'll face it together."

A small smile tugged at my lips, and I felt a warmth spread through my chest. Harry always had a way of making me feel safe, cherished. And in that moment, I knew that as long as we had each other, we could overcome anything.

"Thank you," I whispered, unable to find the right words to express the depth of my gratitude and love for him.

He reached across the table again, this time brushing a strand of hair away from my face. "No thanks necessary. Just you and me, one day at a time."

I took another sip of my coffee, the bitterness contrasting with the sweetness of the moment. I watched Harry as he returned his gaze to the garden, a small smile playing on his lips. There was something almost magical about the way he could find beauty in the simplest of things, and it reminded me of why I had fallen in love with him in the first place.

As we sat there, the morning sun continued to rise, casting long shadows across the yard. Birds chirped merrily in the background, and the world seemed to be waking up around us. I realized that despite the challenges we faced, there was a quiet strength in the love we shared—a strength that would carry us through whatever lay ahead.

"Harry," I said softly, drawing his attention back to me. "I love you."

He smiled, a slow, genuine smile that reached his eyes. "I love you too, babe. More than you'll ever know."

And in that moment, I knew that no matter what the future held, we would face it together, hand in hand, heart to heart. The past might have left its scars, but our love was a healing balm, a promise of brighter days to come. And as long as we had each other, there was nothing we couldn't overcome.

Harry

The morning light filtered through the curtains, casting a soft glow on the dining table where Raine and I sat. She was stirring her coffee, her delicate fingers moving rhythmically, a soft smile playing on her lips after our conversation. To anyone else, it would be a picture-perfect moment between two people deeply in love. But inside my mind, a storm of dark memories and sinister plans raged.

"Harry, are you okay? You seem a bit lost," Raine's voice pulled me back to the present. Her green eyes sparkled with concern, or maybe it was just the reflection of the sunlight. I forced a smile, the kind that had become second nature over the years.

"Just thinking about work," I lied effortlessly. "You know how it is, always something on my mind."

She laughed softly, the sound like nails on a chalkboard to my ears. "You're always so dedicated. That's one of the things I love about you."

My heart twisted at her words. If only she knew how dedicated I truly was. Dedicated to a plan that had been brewing for years, ever since that night when I was just a boy, lurking in the shadows, witnessing the unimaginable.

I remember the way her face had contorted in fear and rage, the way her hands had trembled as she clutched the knife. My father’s eyes, wide with shock and betrayal, as he fell to the ground, lifeless. The way she had cried rape, her voice breaking. And how, somehow, she had covered it all up. She had gotten away with murder.

"Harry, you sure you're okay?" Raine's voice broke through again, her hand reaching across the table to touch mine. The contact burned, but I didn't flinch.

"Yeah, just a bit tired. Didn't sleep well last night," I replied, squeezing her hand gently, playing the role of the perfect partner. It was a role I had perfected over the years, meticulously building her trust, making her believe in our love. All part of my master plan.

She nodded, her concern fading into a soft smile. "Maybe we should take a vacation, get away from everything for a while."

A vacation. The irony was almost laughable. She had no idea that our entire relationship was a carefully constructed façade, a game of cat and mouse where she was the unsuspecting prey. Soon, she would understand the true meaning of getting away from everything.

"That sounds nice," I said, my voice steady, betraying none of my inner turmoil. "Maybe somewhere quiet and secluded."

Her eyes lit up. "Yes, that would be perfect. Just the two of us."

Just the two of us. Those words echoed in my mind, fueling the dark satisfaction that simmered beneath my calm exterior. Soon, it would be just the two of us, and the truth would finally come to light.

I watched her as she took a sip of her coffee, oblivious to the fate that awaited her. She thought she was safe, that her secrets were buried deep. But I had seen everything. I had seen her kill my father. And I had spent years planning my revenge, ensuring that every step brought me closer to this moment.

"Hey, we should start looking at wedding venues soon," Raine said, breaking into my thoughts once more. "I want everything to be perfect."

"Of course," I replied, my smile never faltering. "Perfect."

Perfect. The word had become my mantra, my guiding principle. Everything had to be perfect for the grand finale, the moment when she would finally realize that her past had caught up with her.

As we sat there, drinking our coffee and making plans for a future that would never come, I couldn't help but feel a twisted sense of satisfaction. My plan was working perfectly. Soon, the charade would end, and justice would be served. A life for a life.

"I love you so much.” Raine said softly, her eyes filled with genuine affection.

"I love you too," I replied, the words leaving my lips with practiced ease. In a way, it wasn't a lie. I did love her, or at least the idea of her. The idea of the woman who had unknowingly given me a purpose, a reason to keep going.

The woman who would soon pay for her sins.

As we finished our coffee and prepared to face the day, I allowed myself one last glance at her, committing every detail to memory. Soon, it would all be over. Soon, my revenge would be complete. And she would understand the true meaning of pain and loss she caused me.

"Let's make today a good one," Raine said, her smile bright and hopeful.

"Yes," I replied, my heart pounding with anticipation. "Let's."
