Chapter 1
The night had drawn a suffocating veil over Gotham, thick with the promise of rain. Every corner of the city was shrouded in the cold embrace of shadow, the skyscrapers looming like silent sentinels. Batman’s breath was steady, controlled, though his muscles were coiled with anticipation. His cape billowed behind him as he pursued Catwoman across the rooftops, the relentless rhythm of their chase echoing through the darkness.
Catwoman was fast, but he was faster. Her sleek form darted through the labyrinth of the city with feline grace, but every leap, every twist was met by his own. The chase had been long, the dance between predator and prey pushing them both to their limits, and now, finally, he had her cornered.
She skidded to a halt on a rooftop, chest heaving as she turned to face him. Her eyes, those green, glittering slits, were wild with adrenaline, but there was something else there too—a playful, almost mischievous glint that made Batman narrow his eyes.
“It’s over, Selina,” he growled, his voice low and gravelly, his hand tightening around her wrist as he pulled her close, the rough texture of his glove contrasting sharply with the cool leather of her suit. “You’re going back to Arkham.”
She smiled, a slow, seductive curve of her lips that made something stir in the pit of his stomach despite himself. Her breath was warm against his cheek, carrying the faint scent of jasmine, mingled with the metallic tang of blood and sweat. “Can’t we have one last kiss before you lock me away?” she purred, her voice like silk sliding over barbed wire.
Batman hesitated, his resolve wavering for just a fraction of a second. He knew better than to play her games, but there was something about the way her eyes softened, the way her body melted against his, that made him lean in despite the warning bells screaming in his mind.
Just as their lips were about to meet, the world shifted.
It was as though the ground beneath them had dropped away, leaving them suspended in a void. The air around them thickened, becoming heavy and oppressive, filled with the stench of rot and decay, a miasma that clung to their skin like a wet shroud. The sounds of the city, the distant sirens, the hum of traffic faded into an eerie, unnatural silence
