Chapter 1

The sun was setting over The Bronx, casting a warm golden hue across the concrete jungle. The streets buzzed with life as vendors packed up their stands, and children played on the sidewalks. Inside a small, modest apartment, Malani stood by the kitchen counter, watching her four-year-old daughter, Emery, play with her dolls on the living room floor.

“Mommy, look! Princess Emery is flying!” Emery’s laughter filled the room as she made her doll soar through the air.

Malani smiled, her heart swelling with love. Emery had been her light through every dark moment, her reason to keep moving forward when the weight of the world pressed down on her shoulders. It had been just the two of them for so long that she had nearly forgotten what it felt like to share her life with anyone else. Her past was a closed book, and she intended to keep it that way.

The sound of keys jingling brought her back to the present. The front door opened, and Tiffany, Malani’s mother, walked in, her face tired but still wearing a warm smile.

“Hey, Ma,” Malani greeted, pouring a cup of tea and handing it to her mother. “How was work?”

Tiffany took the cup gratefully, her eyes lingering on Emery, who was still lost in her imaginary world. “Long day at the hospital, but it’s always worth it. How was your day, sweetie?”

“It was good,” Malani replied, glancing at Emery. “Emery and I went to the park after I finished my shift at the diner. She’s been in her own little world ever since.”

“That’s good,” Tiffany said, taking a sip of her tea. “It’s nice to see her so happy.”

They settled into a comfortable silence, the kind that only comes from years of living together and understanding each other’s rhythms. But as the quiet stretched on, Malani felt a familiar unease creeping in. There was something in her mother’s eyes, a hint of concern that made her stomach twist.

“Ma, is everything okay?” she asked, trying to keep her voice steady.

Tiffany hesitated, glancing down at her cup. “I ran into someone today...someone from your past.”

Malani’s heart skipped a beat. She knew this day would come eventually, but she hadn’t expected it to be today. She set her own cup down, her hands trembling slightly. “Who?”

Tiffany sighed, her expression softening with sympathy. “It was Carter.”

The name hit Malani like a punch to the gut. Carter. The man who had been her first love, her first heartbreak, and the father of her child. She hadn’t seen or heard from him in years, and she had convinced herself that she never would again.

“What...what did he want?” Malani managed to ask, her voice barely above a whisper.

“He said he wanted to see you and Emery,” Tiffany said gently. “He wants to talk.”

Malani felt a rush of conflicting emotions—fear, anger, confusion. The life she had built for herself and Emery was safe, stable, free from the chaos that Carter had brought into it. She didn’t want him coming back and turning their world upside down again.

“I don’t want to see him,” she said firmly, though her voice wavered. “He walked out on us, and now he wants to waltz back into our lives like nothing happened? No, Ma. I can’t do that.”

Tiffany reached out, placing a comforting hand on her daughter’s arm. “I understand, honey. But people change. Maybe he’s different now.”

Malani shook her head, tears welling up in her eyes. “I don’t care if he’s changed. He had his chance, and he blew it. Emery and I are better off without him.”

As she spoke, Malani could feel the walls she had built around her heart begin to crack. She had worked so hard to bury the pain of her past, to create a future for herself and her daughter that was free from the shadows of what had been. But now, those shadows were creeping back in, threatening to swallow her whole.

She looked over at Emery, who was still happily playing on the floor, blissfully unaware of the storm brewing around her. Malani knew she had to be strong for her daughter, to protect her from the hurt and disappointment that Carter had caused.

But as she stood there, staring at the closed door to her past, Malani couldn’t help but wonder if some doors were meant to stay open, no matter how much pain lay on the other side.
