Chapter 1
The sleek black Suburban Chevrolet glided to a stop in front of the towering Manhattan skyscraper. The rear door swung open, revealing a pair of stiletto heels that touched down on the pavement with practiced grace. Amara Blackwood emerged, cutting an imposing figure in her tailored charcoal suit. The crisp white shirt beneath was unbuttoned just enough to hint at danger.
Amara adjusted her dark sunglasses, hiding eyes that had witnessed centuries. She strode purposefully towards the gleaming lobby doors, her presence magnetic. Heads turned as she passed, conversations faltering mid-sentence.
“Good evening, Ms. Blackwood,” the doorman said with a deferential nod.
She gave him a curt nod in return, sweeping into the opulent lobby. The click of her heels on marble echoed through the cavernous space as she made her way to the private elevator.
As the doors slid open on the penthouse level, a wave of sensory information assaulted Amara. The low hum of voices washed over her, individual conversations crystallizing with preternatural clarity. Crystal glasses clinked delicately, the sound sharp in her ears. Beneath it all lay an undercurrent of tension - the thrum of high-stakes maneuvering. Big money’s being spent and made here with every word and blink.
Amara’s nostrils flared imperceptibly, sorting through the cocktail of scents. Expensive cologne, nervousness, greed, lust. Her lips curved in a small, knowing smile.
Like sharks circling their prey, she mused. If only they knew there was a far more dangerous predator in their midst.
Her gaze swept the room, cataloguing faces and body language. The tech mogul by the window, feigning nonchalance. The hedge fund manager, his smile brittle. Country music superstar launching her first lingerie collection. And there - the Saudi prince, radiating barely concealed hostility.
“Amara, darling!” trilled a voice to her left. “So glad you could make it.”
She turned, coming face to face with the party’s hostess. “Wouldn’t miss it for the world, Evelyn,” Amara replied smoothly. Evelyn Simmons was a socialite known for her extravagant parties and connections to high society. Her perfectly coiffed hair and designer gown were a stark contrast to Amara’s sleek, no-nonsense style. But the two women had a mutual understanding - they both knew how to navigate these elite circles with ease.
As they exchanged pleasantries, Amara’s mind raced, plotting her next move. The deals to be made, the pawns to be positioned. And always, always, the careful balance of power and secrecy.
Let the games begin, she thought, accepting a flute of champagne with a predatory smile.
–
Across the room, Amara’s gaze locked onto her target - Dmitri Volkov, the Russian oligarch. His imposing figure stood out even among the gathering of power players. Amara’s lips curled into a poised smile as she gracefully made her way towards him.
“Mr. Volkov,” she purred, extending her hand. “Amara Blackwood. I’ve been looking forward to our meeting.”
Dmitri’s steel-gray eyes appraised her, a mix of intrigue and wariness in his gaze. “Ms. Blackwood. Your reputation precedes you.”
“As does yours,” Amara countered smoothly. “I know you’re a busy man, so shall we discuss business?”
Dmitri’s lips quirked in a faint smile as he led Amara to a secluded corner of the room. “Always straight to business, I admire that,” he said, his thick Russian accent adding a hint of danger to his words.
As they moved to a more private corner, Amara’s mind raced. Centuries of negotiations, and still the dance remains the same. The stakes may change, but power is eternal.
“I must start by saying that I have no idea how you obtained my private number, and because of it a few of my most trusted assistants were… well, demoted would be a word, I guess. However, now that you have reached out to me, I must admit that your proposal is quite intriguing,” Dmitri said in his thick accent. “But I do have concerns about the potential risks involved.”
Amara leaned in slightly, her voice low and compelling. “Risk and reward often go hand in hand, Mr. Volkov. But I assure you, the potential here is unprecedented.”
She could see the calculations behind his eyes, the weighing of options. Amara pressed on, weaving a tapestry of possibility with her words. Each phrase was carefully chosen, drawing upon lifetimes of experience in swaying human minds.
“Consider the long-term implications,” she urged. “This venture could reshape entire industries.”
Dmitri’s resistance was palpable, but Amara could sense it wavering. She allowed a hint of her supernatural allure to seep into her demeanor, her eyes captivating as she spoke of profit margins and market dominance that her client is sure of.
Just a little more, she thought. The fly is nearly in the web.
–
As the conversation progressed, Amara’s heightened senses tingled with the shifting energies in the room. She could hear the quickening of Dmitri’s heartbeat, smell the subtle change in his pheromones as intrigue overcame caution. Around them, the buzz of the party faded to a dull hum as she focused intently on her prey.
“You make a compelling argument, Ms. Blackwood,” Dmitri conceded, his voice a low rumble. “But I wonder, what’s in it for your client?”
Amara’s lips curved into a enigmatic smile. “Let’s just say they have a vested interest in seeing this particular market... evolve.”
She could sense the oligarch’s growing excitement, not just at the prospect of the deal, but at her presence. His eyes lingered on the exposed skin at her collar, and she felt a flicker of hunger that had nothing to do with blood.
Men. So predictable, even after centuries, she mused inwardly.
Just as the deal seemed within reach, Dmitri leaned back, a calculating gleam in his eye. “Perhaps we should discuss this further over dinner, just the two of us?”
Amara’s expression remained impassive, but inwardly she sighed. Here we go again.
“Mr. Volkov,” she said, her tone crisp and professional, “I believe we’ve covered all the pertinent details here. Unless you have any specific objections to the terms?”
Dmitri’s brow furrowed, caught off guard by her directness. “I... well, there is the matter of the timeline...”
“Which we’ve addressed in clause 7b,” Amara countered smoothly, producing the information directly from her memory. “As you can see, we’ve allowed for considerable flexibility.”
She watched as the last of his resistance crumbled, replaced by a mixture of admiration and barely concealed desire.
“You are... quite remarkable, Ms. Blackwood,” Dmitri said, his voice husky. “Perhaps after we sign, we could celebrate with a drink?”
Amara’s smile was polite but distant. “I’m afraid I have a prior engagement, Mr. Volkov. But I’m sure you’re going to forgive me once payment goes through to your account. I do look forward to our future business dealings.”
With that, she extended her hand for a firm handshake, leaving the oligarch both impressed and slightly dazed in her wake.
–
As the final signatures were inked in a dark library room on the other side of the penthouse, Amara felt a familiar stirring within her. The hunger, always simmering beneath the surface, began to claw at her insides. She gracefully excused herself from the gathering, her movements fluid and purposeful as she navigated through the crowd.
“If you’ll excuse me, gentlemen,” Amara said, her voice smooth as silk. “I need a moment of fresh air.”
She made her way towards the balcony, acutely aware of the eyes following her progress. The scent of perfume, cologne, and warm bodies mingled in the air, tempting her senses. But Amara’s control was iron-clad, honed over centuries.
As she stepped onto the balcony, the evening air caressed her skin. The contrast between the vibrant energy inside and the young moonlit serenity outside was stark. New York City sprawled before her, a glittering tapestry of lights and shadows. In her past, she had been a part of these shadows, in different times and places. But now, she didn’t long for that part of her life anymore.
“Ms. Blackwood?” a soft voice called from the corner.
Amara turned to see a young woman with shoulder-length red curls. Carol, her arranged companion for the evening.
“I hope I’m not disturbing you,” Carol said, her voice tinged with nervousness.
Amara’s lips curved into a gentle smile. “Not at all, Carol. Your timing is perfect.” Michael, her assistant, did a fantastic job setting up these grab-and-go snacks.
Carol’s cheeks flushed, her heart rate quickening. “I-I’ve never done anything like this before,” she admitted, fidgeting with the hem of her dress.
Amara stepped closer, her presence both comforting and commanding. “There’s no need to be nervous,” she said softly. “We’ll take things slow.”
Carol’s eyes widened, a mix of excitement and apprehension swirling in their depths. “O-okay,” she stammered, her gaze fixed on Amara’s lips.
Amara gently cupped Carol’s face, her thumb tracing the younger woman’s jawline. The hunger within her surged, but she held it in check, savoring the anticipation.
“Just relax,” Amara murmured, leaning in closer. “And trust me.”
–
Amara’s fangs descended with practiced control, piercing Carol’s skin with exquisite gentleness. The young woman gasped, her body tensing momentarily before melting into Amara’s embrace. As the rich, life-giving fluid flowed, Amara’s senses heightened, every nerve singing with pleasure.
“Oh,” Carol breathed, her fingers clutching at Amara’s suit jacket. “That feels... amazing. Strange, but amazing.”
Amara drew just enough to sate her hunger, careful not to take more than necessary. She savored the taste, the warmth, the vitality—all while maintaining an acute awareness of Carol’s well-being.
After a few moments, Amara withdrew, her tongue darting out to seal the tiny wounds. Carol swayed slightly, her eyes unfocused and dreamy.
“Are you alright?” Amara asked, steadying the young woman.
Carol nodded, a blissful smile spreading across her face. “I feel... wonderful. Kinda floaty.”
Amara chuckled softly. “That’s normal. It will pass soon.” She guided Carol to a nearby chaise lounge. “Rest here for a bit.”
As Carol settled, Amara turned to face the city, her gaze sweeping over the glittering skyline. The lights of New York twinkled below, a stark reminder of the mortal world she navigated with such ease.
“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” Carol’s voice drifted from behind her.
Amara nodded, a hint of melancholy in her smile. “It is. But like all things, it’s fleeting.”
“What do you mean?” Carol asked, curiosity overcoming her lingering daze.
Amara’s thoughts drifted to the countless civilizations she’d witnessed rise and fall. “Nothing lasts forever, dear Carol. Cities, empires, even this very moment—they’re all temporary.”
“That sounds... sad,” Carol murmured.
Amara turned back to her, expression softening. “It can be. But it also makes each moment precious. Including this one. Thank you for sharing it with me.”
–
Amara smoothed her suit jacket and strode back into the penthouse, the subtle scent of blood still lingering on her breath. The gathering hummed with renewed energy, conversations flowing as freely as the champagne.
“Ah, Ms. Blackwood!” A silver-haired man approached, his eyes twinkling. “I was hoping to catch you before the evening’s end.”
Amara flashed a practiced smile. “Mr. Hawthorne, always a pleasure. I trust the merger is proceeding smoothly?”
“Indeed, thanks to your expert guidance.” He leaned in conspiratorially. “I was wondering if we might schedule a lunch next week to discuss some... delicate matters.”
“Of course,” Amara purred, her voice a blend of silk and steel. “My assistant will reach out to arrange the details.”
As Mr. Hawthorne drifted away, Amara navigated the room with predatory grace. She exchanged pleasantries, dropped veiled hints, and secured promises of future meetings. All the while, her heightened senses remained alert, cataloging every micro-expression and subtle shift in body language.
As she walked by, a young executive that she knows from a previous business venture gave her a wave and said, “You make it look effortless.” She could hear the admiration in his tone.
Amara’s laugh was low and melodious. “Practice, my dear. Centuries of it.”
The man chuckled, assuming it was a joke. If only he knew.
–
The black Suburban glided to a stop on the private airstrip, its tinted windows reflecting the glare of runway lights. Amara Blackwood emerged, her tailored suit accentuating her powerful frame as she strode towards the waiting jet. The click of her heels on the tarmac echoed in the night air, a rhythm that spoke of purpose and authority.
As she approached the aircraft’s steps, her assistant Michael hurried to catch up, tablet in hand. His youthful features were alight with a barely concealed glow of satisfaction.
“Ms. Blackwood, good evening, would you like to review the lunch options for the flight?” Michael asked, his voice professional despite the hint of a smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
Amara turned, her dark glasses catching the moonlight. “Certainly, Michael. Though I must say, you seem rather... energized this evening. Productive night, perhaps?”
A faint blush crept up Michael’s neck. “I, uh... yes, quite productive. Now, about your schedule upon arrival in Greece-”
“Oh come now,” Amara teased, her lips curving into a knowing smirk. “That handsome fellow from the bar didn’t keep you too busy to prepare, did he? I caught a glimpse from my window. He seemed... quite taken with you.”
Michael’s cheeks flushed as he nervously adjusted his tie. “Ms. Blackwood, I assure you my personal affairs never interfere with my professional duties. Now, if we could focus on the itinerary...”
Amara chuckled, a rich sound that carried on the night air. “Always so proper, Michael.
Okay, let’s get down to business on board, and you can fill me in on the lunch arrangements. By the way, thank you for arranging a bite for me earlier. And, needless to say, I’m also curious about our enigmatic Croatian client.”
As they ascended the steps, Amara’s thoughts turned to the assignment ahead. The jet’s plush interior enveloped her as she settled into a leather seat, the familiar thrill of the unknown sending a tingle down her spine.
“What can you tell me about this client, Michael?” she asked, her voice low and curious.
Michael tapped his tablet, bringing up a dossier. “Not much, I’m afraid. They’ve gone to great lengths to maintain anonymity. All we know is that they’re extremely wealthy, well-connected, and have specifically requested you and your... unique services.”
Amara’s brow furrowed slightly. Interesting. And possibly risky. I have always enjoyed that combination.
“Well then,” she murmured, more to herself than to Michael, “let’s see what secrets the Croatian isles have in store for us.”
As the jet lifted off, carrying her towards new intrigues, Amara allowed herself a moment of vulnerability. The thrill of the unknown battled with a familiar trepidation – the weight of countless lifetimes making even the promise of novelty seem fleeting.
Yet, as always, she steeled herself. Whatever challenges lay ahead, Amara Blackwood would face them with the with grace, cunning, and the quiet confidence of one who had seen empires rise and fall. The mortals of Hvar island had no idea what was about to descend upon their idyllic shores.
–
As the jet leveled off, Amara gazed out at the endless expanse of clouds, her reflection ghosting against the window. Her dark eyes, holding centuries of secrets, stared back at her.
“Quite the view, isn’t it?” Michael’s voice broke through her reverie.
Amara turned, a small smile playing on her lips. “It never gets old, despite how many times I’ve seen it.”
“Speaking of old,” Liam said, settling into the seat across from her, “how are you feeling after the, um, refreshment on the balcony?”
“Satiated, for now,” Amara replied, her tone matter-of-fact. “But let’s focus on the task at hand. What can you tell me about our Croatian contact, the one that meets us at the airport?”
As Michael began to brief her, Amara’s thoughts drifted away. The private jet, the designer suits, the high-stakes business deals - it was all just a facade, a carefully constructed image. She could have this luxurious lifestyle without lifting a finger or resorting to thievery. After all, she had eternity on her side. But where would be the thrill in that? There was a primal need within her that no amount of money or power could satisfy completely. So she made the most of her time and found ways to indulge in life’s pleasures while maintaining her carefully concealed existence.
“Amara?” Michael’s voice pulled her back. “Are you alright?”
She blinked, composing herself. “Of course. Please continue.”
But even as she listened intently to the details of her upcoming meeting, a part of her remained distant. The mortal world, with its fleeting concerns and ephemeral dramas, sometimes felt like a elaborate game – one she had mastered long ago, yet continued to play.
“It sounds like we’re gonna catch some sun,” Amara mused aloud when Michael finished. “Though I suspect there’s not going to be a lot of time for sunbathing.”
As the jet soared towards the Croatian isles, Amara felt that familiar mix of anticipation and world-weariness. The hunger within her stirred once more, a reminder of her true nature. But for now, Amara Blackwood, eternal predator draped in mortal luxury, set her sights on the horizon and the next move in her endless game.
