Don’t Let Her In

They say, don’t let her in

But your resolve is crumbling,

This web she spins,

You always feel it coming

It starts with a whisper,

A soft taunt only you can hear

Her footsteps creep behind you,

As she murmurs in your ear

It’s a sound that’s at first inane,

Like a bite of cold on a long winter day

She sees as you pace

She hears every thought

Every trial faced,

And every battle fought

On your thoughts she feasts,

And on your fears she dines

She will never cease,

She’ll haunt you til you die.

I think we all know the feeling

Whatever we may call it

It’s a thought that leaves you reeling,

It’s a bitter trap to fall in

You see their faces now

They penetrate the clouds

They are people you know,

And some that you don’t

They are people you will meet,

And some that you won’t

They’re all part of her act,

They too have whispers in their ears

And it’s company they lack,

When she’s the puppeteer.

Don’t let her in

Your resolve is not crumbling,

You’re free from the web she spins

So when you feel her coming,

When she murmurs in your ear

Know I sense your fight

Know that we too must hear

But for the dark, I have a light:

Let fog wane and air be clear,

As she stalks us through the night

Once there was one,

And now there are more

Fading are the wounds,

That we once bore

She used to guide us,

But now she merely sees

She is superfluous

We say “She has no power over me.”

We open her eyes and let her see

We don’t need to be controlled

So with farewell on our lips,

We lead her to the door

And away she slips

She will torment us no more.
