"This story is superb . I Love the building suspense that held me to every page. your grammar was stunning and your vison in black and white created an eerie memory of the past. You voice has a unique narration to the view of the story. The plot unravels gracefully and the horror and mystery of it keeps the flow of the story going well."
Delightfully Twisted
"This was expertly done. Your writing style is well-matched to the period— Your prose meanders like London’s alleyways, revealing some new element at every turn. You do this effortlessly, almost invisibly (wait—he doesn't want to kill her?… wait—they live together?)— staggering each tiny piece of information at perfectly-paced intervals as we follow your bread crumbs to the tale’s morbid end. Every moment offers something new. Most of all, I loved the emotional turn when Kidney discovers that Liz is dead. That was my favorite part. Read this story. And learn why you should never take the Leather Apron lightly! *** Constructive note: If there is any suggestion I could offer, I’d say that rhythmically I felt a bit of a break in the weeks that Kidney waited to contact Harry (Starting with the paragraph “It was a few days later…”, and when it picked back up I felt I’d lost a little momentum. This could be resolved by giving us a glimpse of Kidney desperately wanting to contact Harry, but being afraid to throughout the week— adding tension to the moment when he finally has the courage to do so."
Beautifully written story!
"While I don't typically enjoy time period stories, I found this intriguing. I enjoy horror so I was immediately interested that the ripper was involved. I thought the pace was spot on and the words were beautifully written. I felt I could see the story because of how descriptive your writing is. I thought your ending was clever. Can't wait to see what you publish next!"
Chilling!
"Skimming the summary made me curious, and I wasn't disappointed. This story has the right length to be read in one go, and it's well-paced in its flow. Wording and content go very well together to fit the style of the story and its historical background. The main character, the first person narrator, is very realistic, and his actions and behaviour are consistent with the first impression he gives of himself throughout the story. The opening paragraphs and the finishing ones close the circle on the beautifully twisting plot nicely, though I might look at the last bit again for just one small part where it becomes a little unclear (just in one place) whose voice we're hearing: Kidney's or the author's? All in all: I loved this short story! Very well written!"
A very chilling tale which kept me gripped!
"This was, in fact, the first story I had the privilege of reading on this site, and I am not disappointed. It was perfectly executed from beginning to end, with the author managing to hang a dark atmosphere above it the entire time. There is not one moment which is tiring. The first person narrative was well chosen. Getting inside of the main protagonists thoughts was what granted him his innocence in a sense, despite the crime he committed. I thoroughly enjoyed it!."
Gripped
"Gripped by unexpected plot twists A brilliant short that captured perfectly the essence of Jack, and yet underpinned by real tragedy and a story line that makes one read faster searching for clues of what comes next. Brilliant writing"
Wonderfully dark from start to finish
"Horror is not usually my choice for fiction. Normally my interest isn't piqued enough to pay attention as it falls into the tried and true cliches. This story pulled me in immediately, even though it was in a "Oh god, what is going to happen?" kind of way. Rarely have I read a story where the author is willing to have a main character start in such a violent manner and that is exactly what kept me entranced. It's shockingly violent and from the start you can tell he is going to go too far and it's tragic in a way.. It's almost like a train wreck, you want to look away but you simply cannot because of the awfulness of the situation. Your writing style is fluid and extremely easy to follow. The description is beautifully done which is so important when writing in the first person and doubly so when it is a story such as this. Wonderfully done."
Catch me if you can Mister Lusk...
"From the perspective of someone who has some experience of the Jack the Ripper mythology, this story hits the mark. The author shows a good understanding to of the facts and history of the case and manages to create a story that is not only compelling but tense and leaves you shocked at the final revelation. The writing is well worked and does well to convey the horror of the story without having to be too explicit and leaves a lot to the reader's imagination. If you love Victorian Gothic horror, this mixture of fact and fiction will be right up your street. A great little story!"
Ripper Strikes Again
"Excellent story which picks up the well-worn thread of the Jack the Ripper mythos, and takes us further into the mind of a killer. While this riffs on the many versions of the story that have entered popular culture (notably Moore's From Hell, as the other review mentioned), it still proves a unique, chilling tale. well-written and informed by some of the fiction of the fin di seicle period--Stevenson, Wells, etc. The fast pace complements the narrative and the small details make the story, which could be a mere historical exercise, live again. This is a major writer to enter the Inkitt scene, and an exciting story as well--deserves many reads and votes!"
Interesting, Potential to Expand
"This was well written, with only a couple of grammatical errors (one that comes to mind was the use of "lightening", when it should have been "lightning").. It had a nice balance of intrigue and pulse-pounding action, and the descriptions were decent--but I did feel it fell short in some regards. While I have no issue with stories revisiting existing concepts/tropes, I felt that for a Jack the Ripper story, so much more could have been thrown in to make it stand out from the many variations already in existence. Overall though, it was a good read, and I think it has a great deal of potential to be expanded upon. :)"
Good Read
"I really enjoyed the read. What a way to take a legend story as such and give it this "breath' of freshness. It's a well written, well told prose. I like how the plot twist comes into play when you think it's just a story of crime of passion."
Dressed To Deceive
"I didn't want like this story but I did. I liked the descriptions and use of of them which I worried about them being overly dramatic but it was not to be. The writer used them almost perfectly and as I said the more I read the more I enjoyed it. I had only two problems, the first being the use of "whilst" several times however it struck me that it was most likely a dialect from British. Also the ending could have been a bit more twisty, such as the protagonist could have killed the ripper himself thus ending Jack's reign of terror which has never in my knowledge been discovered. Still, in the end I liked this story a lot!"
Unexpected and enthralling
"From the very beginning of the story, I was caught up in the story. It was full of unexpected twists and sly turns. It was a dark story, but most mysteries are. I would definitely recommend this story to any Jack the Ripper fan."
Dressed to Deceive
"I thought this story to be boring and trite. Where was originality of thought in this story? Where was something that could 'grab' the reader to think, ''this is new, this is fantastic, this is a work of art.'? I'm appalled that this story is winning a contest, just because he has more followers on facebook and such - this is not a contest, it's a joke."
