The moon hung swollen and red over the valley, like a single abservant eye. Every villager of Dawnwatch could feel the pressure in the air—the silent promise that death was coming.

And death had a name: Seraphina Bloodrose.

From atop the northern ridge, she approached.

Her silhouette rose like shadowed royalty: tall, elegant, winged. Long hair flowed behind her like a spill of liquid darkness, and her gown fluttered with the whisper of countless souls she had claimed. The air chilled as she descended the slope, each footstep cracking frost across the grass.

Dawnwatch’s alarm bells rang. Torches ignited. The people gathered behind their walls, trembling.

And standing alone outside the gate was Nova Vale.

He had a sword that felt slightly too heavy, armor that chafed, and a heartbeat loud enough to alert every monster in a mile radius. But he stood firm. Because if he didn’t, no one else would.

Seraphina landed with a graceful thud, wings folding behind her like curtains of night.

“So,” she purred, “the town sends a single little hero to greet me? How polite.”

Her voice was silk dipped in blood.

Nova swallowed. “I’m here to stop you.”

She smirked. “You? Stop me? Oh, sweet boy… that is adorable.”

And then she moved.

The battle was a blur of speed and terror. Nova struck, dodged, rolled, swung wildly. Seraphina danced around him with effortless grace, tapping his blade aside with a fingernail, countering with playful flicks meant to intimidate, not kill.

She was toying with him—and they both knew it.

“Don’t feel bad,” she sang, spinning around his clumsy strike. “Many have tried. You’re just cuter than most.”

“I’m not here to be cute!” Nova snapped.

“Mm, shame.”

She vanished. Reappeared behind him. Pinned him to the ground with a single hand on his chest.

He froze, breath shaking.

“Such fire,” she whispered. “It almost makes me want to—”

Her eyes flickered.

Her nostrils flared.

And then her expression changed entirely.

“…what is that scent?”

Nova blinked. “What scent?”

“You.”

Seraphina leaned closer, inhaling again. “Your blood… it’s calling to me.”

Before he could react, she lowered her fangs to his neck—not plunging them in, but gently grazing his skin.

A shiver shot down his spine.

Then she bit.

It was quick—barely more than a taste.

But when she pulled back, she staggered. Her wings trembled. Her pupils dilated to thin red rings.

“What… what is this?” she gasped.

Nova scrambled away, confused and dizzy. “Wh-what did you do?!”

Seraphina pressed a hand to her chest. For the first time in centuries, her heart beat.

A real, pulsing, desperate beat.

Painful. Terrifying. Alive.

She stared at him as though the world had just cracked open.

“You…” she whispered. “Mortal… what have you done to me?”

Nova raised his sword again with shaking hands. “I—I don’t know! But I’m still going to protect my—”

Seraphina silenced him by appearing inches from his face, eyes glowing like twin eclipses.

“I have tasted the world’s strongest kings. I have fed on dragons. I have swallowed the blood of entire empires.”

Her voice quivered—something it had never done.

“But yours…” She touched her lips. “It is exquisite. Addicting. Perfect.”

Nova’s face went red. “Please don’t describe me like I’m a dessert.”

She placed a hand on his cheek, gentle yet possessive.

“Nova Vale,” she breathed, “you are the first mortal to make my heart move. I will not kill you. I will not kill your town. I… I wish to claim you.”

He blinked. “Claim me? As in…?”

She leaned in, lips near his ear.

“Become my husband.”

Nova nearly dropped his sword. “WHAT?!”

“In exchange, I will spare Dawnwatch. No more raids. No more bloodshed.” She cupped his jaw, tilting his face toward hers. “Just you. By my side. Forever.”

He stammered, “I—I can’t just—marriage?! Right now?! We’re in the middle of a fight!”

“There is no need for fighting,” she purred. “Only deciding.”

Her wings spread behind her like a cathedral of darkness.

Boom.

His town’s gates shook behind him. People cried his name, begging him to live.

Seraphina extended her hand.

A queen offering a choice.

“Well, my brave hero? Will you save your people… and become mine?”

Nova looked at her. At the frightened town behind him. At the moonlit valley that would be drenched in crimson if he refused.

He closed his eyes.

“…Fine,” he whispered.

Seraphina froze.

Then slowly, slowly, a smile bloomed—soft, warm, disbelieving.

“Then come, my beloved,” she murmured, lifting his hand to her lips. “Your queen awaits.”

With a sweep of her wings, she carried him into the night.

And Dawnwatch saw no more death.

Only a hero carried away by the queen who had fallen in love with him at first bite. But as Seraphina carried Nova toward the looming spires of her castle, he felt something cold curl around his spine.

It wasn’t her claws…

It wasn’t her wings…

It wasn’t even the strange, warm flutter in his chest every time she looked at him.

It was the realization that Dawnwatch might be safe—

but he had just stepped into a world where no hero had ever returned.

And somewhere in the darkness of the night sky, the castle lights flickered awake…

as if the ancient fortress itself had been waiting for him.

Waiting to swallow him whole.

Waiting to see whether the queen’s new “beloved” would survive his first dawn in the Vampire Castle.
