Chapter 1 The Letter Never Sent
The Letter Never Sent
The sewing box had been sitting in the attic for as long as Maya could remember, and she’d almost left it for the donation pile without opening it. But something made her lift the lid one more time, and underneath a tangle of old thread, she found an envelope. The paper had gone soft and yellow at the edges. It was sealed. It had never been mailed.
The name on the front wasn’t her grandfather’s. It said Elias.
Maya sat down right there on the attic floorboards, the envelope balanced on her knees, and for a long while she just looked at it. Her grandmother had been gone three months. There was no one left to ask.
