THE THINGS HE BURIED

All Rights Reserved ©

Summary

She came to catch her husband cheating. She found him burying a body. Claire Marshall has the perfect life—a successful fashion brand, a devoted husband, a talented daughter, and a beautiful home in an upscale neighborhood. At least, that's what her Instagram followers believe. But perfection is a lie. When Claire checks her studio's security camera footage, she sees something she wasn't meant to find—her husband Daniel in a parked car with their neighbor Nora Bennett. Their fingers intertwined. His forehead against her shoulder. She follows him to an abandoned construction site, expecting to catch him with Nora. Instead, she watches Daniel drag a body from his trunk and bury it. The dead man is Drew Colton—a private investigator Nora hired to dig up dirt on her estranged husband. Drew had photos. Drew had recordings. Drew had a video that could put someone in prison for life. Now Drew is dead. And Claire's daughter Ivy was at the scene. What Claire doesn't know yet: the real killer isn't her husband. The real killer is still out there. And he knows what Claire saw. The affair was just the beginning.

Above the Crack

The next morning, Claire woke before dawn. The sky outside her window was still dark, the streetlights casting pools of orange light on the wet pavement. Rain had fallen overnight, leaving the world slick and gleaming. She sat up slowly, her body aching from lack of sleep. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d slept through the night. Her muscles felt tight, her head heavy, her thoughts sluggish and sharp at the same time.

0

She dressed in the dark. Jeans. A dark sweater. Sturdy shoes. She didn’t know what the day would bring, but she wanted to be ready for anything. Her hands moved automatically, zipping her jacket, lacing her boots. She caught her reflection in the mirror above her dresser—a pale face, hollowed eyes, a mouth set in a line of determination.

0

Claire, Ivy, and Nora met at the precinct at 8:50 AM.

0

The sun had finally broken through the clouds, bright and harsh, reflecting off the white walls of the building. The light hurt Claire’s eyes after so many days spent in shadow. She squinted against it, feeling exposed and vulnerable.

0

“Ivy, you don’t have to come inside. You can wait in the car.”

0

“No, Mom. I’m coming.”

0

Claire looked at her daughter. Ivy’s face was set, her jaw tight. She’d put on a clean shirt and brushed her hair. She looked serious in a way that made Claire’s heart ache. This was her daughter, her little girl, being asked to grow up too fast.

0

“You don’t have to do this,” Claire said again.

0

“Yes, I do.” Ivy’s voice was quiet, but steady. “You said you wanted me to tell the truth. I’m telling the truth.”

0

Nora stood beside them, her face pale, her hands trembling. She’d come alone. Ethan hadn’t returned. Lily was at school, unaware of what was happening. Nora had left her a note, Claire assumed, a brief explanation she would have to unpack later.

0

This was the right thing, Claire told herself. The only thing. She repeated it like a mantra in her head, willing it to be true.

0

The officer who took their statement was younger than Claire expected. He wore a pressed uniform and a tie that was slightly crooked, as if he’d dressed in a hurry. He had kind eyes, but they were professional, assessing. He listened carefully, his expression growing more serious with each word she spoke. He didn’t interrupt. He just wrote, his pen moving steadily across the page.

0

Claire explained everything. The footage from the security camera. The construction site. The body buried under three concrete slabs. Aldrich’s extortion. Eric Flynn’s involvement. The texts, the calls, the threats. She laid it all out, piece by piece, like a surgeon opening a wound. Her voice never wavered.

0

Ivy spoke next. Her voice was softer than Claire’s, but just as clear. She described the night she and Lily had taken the car. The dark road. The figure in the headlights. The panic. The rush to get home. The secret she’d carried for weeks.

0

Nora provided the financial records. The transfers, the payments, the trail of money that led back to Aldrich and Flynn.

0

The officer set down his pen when they finished. His face was grim. “Where’s the body now?”

0

“I don’t know. Someone moved the slabs. The site’s been disturbed.”

0

“And Aldrich?”

0

“His real name is Kane Aldrich. He’s working with a man named Eric Flynn. I have recordings. I have evidence. I have everything you need.”

0

The officer wrote it all down. “We’ll investigate.”

0

They walked out into the bright morning sun. The air felt different now—lighter, but also colder. Claire took a deep breath, the first full breath she’d taken in weeks.

0

“Where are you going now?” Nora asked.

0

“I need to see the site. One more time.”

0

“Do you want company?”

0

“No. I need to do this alone.”

0

Nora nodded. She squeezed Claire’s arm briefly. “Thank you. For everything.”

0

“Thank you for coming with me.”

0

They shook hands, brief and formal. Then Nora walked toward her car, her steps unsteady but determined. Claire watched her go, then turned to Ivy.

0

“You go home,” Claire said. “I’ll be there soon.”

0

“Mom—”

0

“Please. I need to do this alone.”

0

Ivy hesitated, then nodded. She got into the car and drove away.

0

Claire watched her go, then turned toward her own car. The drive to the construction site was quiet. She didn’t turn on the radio. She didn’t think. She just drove.

0

The construction site was even more desolate in the daylight. Without the moon’s cold glow, the ruins were just ruins. Broken concrete. Twisted rebar. Piles of dirt and debris. The wind blew through the empty structure, a hollow sound that echoed off the walls.

0

She parked and walked through the rubble, her footsteps crunching on the gravel. She passed the broken pillars and piles of debris, making her way to the place where Daniel had dug the grave. She’d been here twice before, but it looked different now. The dirt was disturbed. Some of the concrete slabs had been moved aside, leaving a dark hole in the earth.

0

Someone had been here. Someone had been digging.

0

She crouched down, her fingers brushing the edge of the hole. The dirt was cold and damp. She could see the outline of where the body had been—a dark shape in the earth, like a shadow that had been peeled away. The concrete slabs lay scattered around the hole, their surfaces smeared with mud.

0

She stood up slowly. Her legs felt weak, but she forced them to hold her.

0

A car pulled up behind her.

0

She turned. The man who stepped out was tall, dark-eyed, gray-suited. He wore a black coat and carried a briefcase. He looked nothing like the photos she’d seen of Eric Flynn. This man was older, harder, more polished. His eyes were cold, assessing.

0

“You must be Claire Marshall.”

0

“Who are you?”

0

“My name isn’t important. I’m here on behalf of a mutual acquaintance.” He set the briefcase on the hood of his car, the metal clicking against the paint. “I believe you have something that belongs to him.”

0

“What?”

0

“Your husband’s old partner. Eric Flynn.”

0

“Eric Flynn is dead.”

0

“Is he?” The man smiled, a thin, practiced expression. “Let’s not pretend, Claire. I know you have his notebook. I know you have his contacts. I’m offering you a deal. Give me what I want, and everything else goes away.”

0

“What do you want?”

0

“The evidence. The recordings. The documents you’ve gathered. You don’t need them. They’ll only bring you pain.”

0

Claire stared at him. “And if I refuse?”

0

“I’ll take the evidence myself. And I won’t be gentle about it.”

0

Claire’s hand tightened on her phone. She had recordings. She had proof. But she also had Ivy. And she knew this man had watched her family from the shadows, biding his time.

0

She took a breath. “I don’t have what you want.”

0

“Then you’ve made your choice.”

0

He started walking toward her. His steps were measured, deliberate. He didn’t hurry. He didn’t need to.

0

Claire stepped back, her heel scraping against the debris. Her heart was pounding, but she forced herself to stay calm. She had one chance. One move.

0

And then she pressed the button on her phone. A single click. The sound of a recording starting.

0

“I know you’re recording,” the man said. “It doesn’t matter.”

0

“Maybe it does.”

0

The sirens started somewhere in the distance. Faint at first, then growing louder. The man’s face changed, the practiced smile slipping. He looked toward the road, where a police cruiser was approaching, lights flashing, siren wailing.

0

“You’ll regret this,” he said quietly.

0

“Probably.”

0

Claire watched him walk back to his car. She watched him drive away, his black coat disappearing into the morning light. She stood there until the tail lights vanished.

0

The police cruiser pulled in. The officer who stepped out was the same one who’d taken their statement. “Claire? We got your call. Are you all right?”

0

“I’m fine.”

0

“We’ll need you to come with us. We have a lot to discuss.”

0

She nodded. “I understand.”

0

The construction site had been her beginning. It had been the place where everything started to fall apart. Now it was the place where everything started to come together.

0

She walked toward the cruiser and got in.

0

Daniel was released at 11:00. He was not charged. The evidence against Aldrich was too strong. The evidence against Daniel was circumstantial. He had moved a body, yes, but he hadn’t killed it. The murder was on Aldrich. The cover-up was on Daniel.

0

Kane Aldrich was arrested at 11:03. They found him at his office, packing a bag. He didn’t resist. He didn’t say a word. He just went.

0

The police found Eric Flynn at a safe house across the state line. He didn’t resist either. He sat down on the floor and put his hands behind his back. He’d been waiting, they said. He’d known it was coming.

0

Ivy and Lily left the city at 2:00 the next morning. They didn’t leave a note. They didn’t say goodbye. They just went—two figures in the early morning light, carrying small bags and dreams they’d finally decided to chase.

0

Claire watched them go from her bedroom window. She saw the taillights of the bus disappear into the darkness. She stood there until the street was empty again.

0

She could feel the earth under her feet again. It didn’t feel solid. But it was there.

0

She walked downstairs. Daniel was in the kitchen, staring out the window. He didn’t turn around.

0

“Are you going to leave me?” he asked quietly.

0

Claire didn’t answer immediately. She walked over and stood beside him, looking out at the empty street.

0

“I don’t know yet,” she said. “But I know this: I’m not going to let what happened here define the rest of my life.”

0

The affair had been the beginning. But it wasn’t the end.

0

The end was still coming.

0

And Claire Marshall was ready for it.
