Chapter 1- 12
POOJA: THE GHOST'S OBSESSION, THE OFFICER'S LOVE
Genre: Horror | Romance | Mystery | Supernatural Thriller
The people of Vennela Palle believed that Rudra Nilayam was cursed.
The mansion stood on a lonely hill, surrounded by dead trees and thick fog. Its windows were broken, its walls were covered in black stains, and its enormous wooden doors had remained closed for twenty-five years.
According to village rumours, anyone who entered the mansion after sunset heard a dead man's voice calling their name.
Some never returned.
Others returned, but they were never the same again.
Pooja, a beautiful twenty-three-year-old woman with long black hair and fearless eyes, laughed when her best friend Sravani told her the story.
"Ghosts don't exist," Pooja declared. "People invent stories because they are afraid of the dark."
"Then spend one night inside that mansion," Sravani challenged.
Pooja smiled. "Fine. I'll prove that your ghost is nothing but an old man's imagination."
That evening, Pooja and Sravani reached Rudra Nilayam. Thunder rumbled across the sky as they pushed open the rusty gate.
Inside, dust covered the marble floor. Portraits of a wealthy family hung along the corridor.
At the centre stood a painting of a handsome man dressed in traditional royal clothing.
His eyes were dark and merciless.
Pooja stepped closer.
Suddenly, the grandfather clock struck twelve.
A whisper floated behind her.
"Pooja..."
She turned around.
Nobody was there.
Then she looked at the portrait again.
The man's eyes had moved.
They were staring directly at her.
A deep voice filled the empty hall.
"Finally, you've come back to me."
Pooja's smile disappeared.
For the first time in her life, she felt afraid.
CHAPTER 2: THE MAN IN THE MIRROR
Pooja told herself that exhaustion had played tricks on her mind.
She searched the mansion with Sravani, checking every room. Upstairs, they discovered a bedroom with a huge mirror surrounded by carved black roses.
As Pooja wiped away the dust, a reflection appeared behind her.
A tall man with long black hair, pale skin, and a dangerously handsome face.
She spun around.
The room was empty.
She looked back at the mirror.
The man was still there.
He slowly lifted one hand and pressed it against the glass.
"Don't be afraid, Pooja."
"Who are you?" she whispered.
His lips curved into a sinister smile.
"Your nightmare."
The mirror cracked from top to bottom.
Sravani screamed, and both women ran downstairs.
Outside, police sirens echoed through the village. Another young man had disappeared near the mansion.
The next morning, villagers gathered near the police jeep. A constable explained that the missing man's footprints ended at the mansion gate.
Pooja looked back at the dark windows.
A figure stood behind the curtains.
He raised his hand in a slow wave.
Then the lights went out.
Fresh red letters appeared on the mansion's front door.
SHE HAS RETURNED.
Pooja stared at the message.
Why had the ghost said she had returned when she had never visited the mansion before?
And why did she feel as if a terrible secret connected her to the dead man?
CHAPTER 3: THE FAMILY THAT DIED TWICE
The following morning, Pooja visited Lakshmamma, an elderly woman who knew the history of Rudra Nilayam.
When Pooja described the man in the portrait, Lakshmamma's hands began to tremble.
"You saw Rudra Varma," she whispered.
"Who was he?"
"Twenty-five years ago, Rudra was the only son of Zamindar Veerabhadra Varma. He was wealthy, educated, and handsome. But his anger was more dangerous than any weapon."
Lakshmamma explained that Rudra had become obsessed with controlling everyone around him. His parents feared him, and the servants lived in silence.
One stormy night, Rudra's family left the mansion in a carriage.
The carriage crashed near the river.
Veerabhadra, Bhavani Devi, and several servants died.
Rudra's body was never found.
Soon afterward, strange sounds began coming from the mansion.
"Why would his ghost remain there?" Pooja asked.
"Because the truth was never revealed," Lakshmamma replied.
She handed Pooja an old photograph.
It showed Rudra standing beside his parents. On the back, someone had written:
THE TRUTH IS BURIED WHERE BLOOD WAS SPILLED.
Before Pooja could ask more, a motorcycle stopped outside.
A tall, athletic police officer removed his helmet. His khaki uniform fitted neatly across his broad shoulders, and his serious eyes scanned the street.
"Inspector Arjun Reddy," he introduced himself.
He was investigating the disappearances.
When he saw Pooja, he paused.
"You entered Rudra Nilayam last night?"
"Yes."
"And you came out alive?"
Pooja folded her arms. "As you can see."
Arjun almost smiled.
"Then you might be the person who helps me solve this case."
For the first time since entering the mansion, Pooja felt that someone might stand beside her rather than run away.
CHAPTER 4: THE NIGHT THE DOOR LOCKED
That night, Pooja returned to Rudra Nilayam to retrieve the notebook she had dropped.
She promised Sravani she would return in ten minutes.
Inside the mansion, she found her notebook in the upstairs bedroom.
But when she turned toward the door, it slammed shut.
Pooja grabbed the handle.
Locked.
"Very funny! Open the door!" she shouted.
A voice answered from behind her.
"You still think everything is a joke."
She turned slowly.
Rudra stood beside the window, dressed in dark traditional clothing. His beauty was almost unnatural, but the darkness surrounding him made the room feel smaller.
"Let me out," Pooja demanded.
Rudra approached her.
"You have no idea how long I have waited for you."
"I don't even know you."
His expression changed.
"You will."
The windows rattled. A picture fell from the wall and shattered.
Pooja tried to run, but an invisible force pushed her against the door.
"Stay with me," he whispered.
"Never!"
His eyes darkened.
The air filled with the smell of burning wood.
Then Rudra vanished.
The door unlocked.
Pooja ran outside and collapsed on the steps.
A pair of strong arms caught her before she hit the ground.
It was Arjun.
"Pooja! Look at me. Are you hurt?"
She clutched his uniform.
"There is something inside that house," she whispered. "And it knows my name."
Arjun looked toward the mansion.
"Then we'll find out what it is."
He helped her stand and stayed beside her until her trembling stopped.
Pooja noticed how safe she felt with him.
She didn't yet understand why.
CHAPTER 5: THE STRANGER WHO KNEW HER NAME
Arjun ordered Pooja not to enter the mansion alone.
"You cannot order me around just because you're a police officer," she argued.
"And you cannot investigate a dangerous case without telling anyone where you're going," he replied.
Before Pooja could answer, someone called her name.
Karthik approached them carrying two cups of tea. He was Pooja's childhood friend, a quiet man with a mysterious smile.
"I heard what happened," he said, handing her a cup.
Pooja smiled with relief. "At least someone isn't treating me like a criminal."
Arjun watched Karthik carefully.
"Do you know anything about Rudra Nilayam?"
Karthik hesitated.
"No."
Arjun noticed the hesitation but said nothing.
That evening, Karthik took Pooja to the village library. They searched old newspapers and found an article about the Varma family's deaths.
A line near the bottom had been crossed out.
POLICE SUSPECT FOUL PLAY.
Suddenly, the lights flickered.
A voice spoke from between the shelves.
"Don't trust him."
Pooja turned to Karthik.
"What did you say?"
"I didn't say anything."
In the glass cabinet behind him, Rudra's reflection appeared.
He stared at Karthik with hatred.
Then he looked at Pooja.
"He wants to take you from me."
The glass shattered.
Karthik pulled Pooja away from the falling pieces.
Arjun rushed inside moments later.
But the ghost was gone.
On the floor lay a single black rose.
Its petals were wet with something that looked like blood.
CHAPTER 6: THE INSPECTOR'S DEADLY QUESTION
Arjun spent the next two days investigating the old accident.
He discovered that the original police report had disappeared. The officer who had written it had died under mysterious circumstances.
A retired constable finally agreed to meet Arjun at an abandoned tea shop.
"I should have spoken years ago," the old man confessed.
"What really happened that night?" Arjun asked.
The constable glanced around nervously.
"Rudra was alive when his family's carriage left the mansion. I saw him arguing with his father. He was furious."
"Did he follow them?"
"I heard an engine. Then shouting. After that, the crash."
The constable handed Arjun a folded paper.
"Someone ordered us to call it an accident."
Before Arjun could ask more, a motorcycle sped past the shop.
A gunshot cracked through the air.
The constable fell, wounded in the shoulder.
Arjun rushed him to safety. The shooter escaped.
Later, Arjun opened the folded paper.
It contained several names. One was circled in red.
RUDRA VARMA.
Below it was another name.
REDDY.
Arjun stared at it.
His own surname.
That night, he received a call from an unknown number.
"Stop investigating Rudra Nilayam," a distorted voice warned. "Or you will join the dead."
Arjun ended the call.
He looked at a photograph of Pooja on his desk.
"No," he said quietly. "I'm not leaving her alone in this."
CHAPTER 7: HIS VERSION OF LOVE
Pooja returned to the mansion with a torch and a small recorder.
She wanted evidence that would convince the police that something unnatural was happening.
In the great hall, Rudra appeared beside the staircase.
"You came back."
"I came for answers."
He descended slowly.
"I can give you anything. Wealth. Power. A life without pain."
"I want the truth."
His expression softened.
"You remind me of someone I once knew."
"Your mother?"
His face hardened.
"Do not speak of her."
"Did you kill your family?"
The temperature dropped.
Every candle went out.
Rudra appeared directly in front of her.
"You know nothing about what they did to me!"
"And you know nothing about what I want."
He reached for her wrist. His fingers were icy.
Pooja pulled away.
"Don't touch me."
For a brief moment, something like sorrow crossed his face.
Then anger swallowed it.
The doors slammed shut. An invisible force pinned Pooja against the wall.
"If you refuse me," Rudra whispered, "you will never leave this house."
Pooja struggled against the force.
"You cannot make me love you!"
Rudra froze.
Then he vanished with a scream that shook the windows.
The door burst open.
Arjun rushed inside and wrapped his jacket around Pooja's trembling shoulders.
He didn't ask why she had disobeyed him.
He simply led her outside.
As they reached the police jeep, Pooja looked at him.
"Why did you come?"
Arjun met her eyes.
"Because you matter."
For the first time, Pooja understood the difference between someone who wanted to own her and someone who wanted her to be free.
CHAPTER 8: THE ACCIDENT WAS NO ACCIDENT
The following morning, Pooja and Arjun examined the old photograph Lakshmamma had given them.
Behind the picture frame, they discovered a folded page from Bhavani Devi's diary.
"My son is changing," the diary read. "His anger grows each day. Veerabhadra has decided to send him away, but Rudra believes we are planning to steal his inheritance."
Another entry was dated the night of the accident.
"If anything happens to us, search beneath the eastern staircase. The truth is there."
Pooja stared at Arjun.
"Rudra caused the accident."
"Perhaps," Arjun replied. "But we need evidence."
They returned to Rudra Nilayam during daylight and searched the eastern staircase.
Behind a loose stone, Pooja found a small metal box.
Inside lay a letter, a rusty key, and a photograph of Rudra standing beside a frightened servant.
On the back of the photograph were the words:
HE WAS NOT ALONE THAT NIGHT.
Before they could investigate further, the mansion doors slammed shut.
A voice echoed through the corridor.
"You should have left the past buried."
Rudra appeared at the top of the staircase.
Arjun stepped in front of Pooja.
"Stay behind me."
Rudra laughed.
"You think a uniform can protect her from me?"
Arjun stood his ground.
"Maybe not. But I'll never stop trying."
Rudra's face twisted with fury.
The staircase cracked beneath their feet.
Pooja grabbed Arjun's hand, and together they escaped just before the floor collapsed.
Outside, Pooja looked at their joined hands.
For a moment, neither of them let go.
CHAPTER 9: THE FACE BEHIND THE PHOTOGRAPH
Arjun took the photograph to Lakshmamma.
The elderly woman stared at the servant standing beside Rudra.
"That is Chinna Rao," she whispered. "He was the mansion's caretaker."
"Is he still alive?" Arjun asked.
Lakshmamma nodded slowly.
"He lives outside the village. He disappeared after the accident."
Arjun and Pooja found Chinna Rao in a small house near the river.
The old man became frightened when he saw the photograph.
"I know nothing," he insisted.
"You were there that night," Arjun said. "Tell us the truth."
Chinna Rao finally confessed that Rudra had followed his parents after a violent argument. He had threatened them and demanded that they return to the mansion.
During the confrontation, the carriage had gone off the road.
Chinna Rao had helped conceal the truth because Rudra's powerful relatives threatened his family.
"But how did Rudra die?" Pooja asked.
Chinna Rao looked toward the window.
"I saw him return to the mansion after the accident. He was covered in blood. He said the house would never let him go."
Before he could explain further, every window in the room shattered.
A freezing wind swept through the house.
Rudra's voice filled the air.
"LIARS!"
Chinna Rao collapsed.
Arjun pulled Pooja toward the exit, but a dark figure blocked the doorway.
The ghost stared directly at Pooja.
"Ask your officer what his family did to mine."
Then the darkness swallowed the room.
CHAPTER 10: A KISS IN THE DARK
Arjun and Pooja escaped the house through a back window.
They hid inside an abandoned shed while a storm raged outside.
Pooja was shaking.
Arjun took off his jacket and placed it around her shoulders.
"Are you always this reckless?" he asked gently.
"Only when ghosts threaten my life."
Despite everything, Arjun laughed.
Pooja smiled.
It was the first time she had seen him relax.
"Why did you become a police officer?" she asked.
"Because my father taught me that protecting innocent people matters more than protecting powerful people."
"And who protects you?"
Arjun looked at her.
"Nobody usually asks me that."
Pooja's expression softened.
For a moment, they stood very close.
Then she noticed a cut on his cheek.
She gently touched it.
"You came back for me even when you knew how dangerous that house was."
"I would come back every time."
Their eyes met.
Pooja leaned closer and kissed him.
The kiss was brief, tender, and unexpected.
When they separated, Arjun looked stunned.
Pooja blushed.
"Don't look at me like that, Inspector."
"Like what?"
"Like you just solved the biggest case of your life."
Arjun smiled.
"Maybe I did."
Then a voice whispered from the darkness.
"POOJA..."
The smile vanished from her face.
On the shed's broken mirror, Rudra's face slowly appeared.
His eyes burned with hatred.
"You belong to me."
The mirror shattered.
And somewhere inside the mansion, a bell began to ring.
CHAPTER 11: THE OFFICER'S SECRET
Arjun discovered that his grandfather, a former police officer, had investigated the Varma accident twenty-five years earlier.
He searched his family records and found a sealed letter.
The letter revealed that his grandfather had suspected foul play but had been ordered to destroy the evidence.
Instead, he secretly preserved a copy of the original report.
According to the report, Rudra had been seen chasing his family's carriage during the storm.
Arjun's grandfather had also recorded that Rudra returned to the mansion afterward, injured but alive.
The final line was disturbing.
THE SUBJECT CLAIMS THE HOUSE WILL KEEP HIM FOREVER.
Arjun took the documents to Pooja.
"Your family was involved in this case?" she asked.
"My grandfather tried to expose the truth. Someone stopped him."
"Then we'll finish what he started."
Arjun looked at her with admiration.
"You aren't afraid anymore?"
Pooja shook her head.
"I'm afraid. But I'm more afraid of letting Rudra hurt someone else."
Before Arjun could respond, his phone rang.
A constable reported that Karthik had disappeared.
Pooja's heart sank.
They hurried to Karthik's house and found a message carved into the door.
BRING POOJA TO RUDRA NILAYAM.
Arjun crumpled the paper.
"He wants to use Karthik to lure you inside."
Pooja looked toward the distant hill.
"Then we won't let him decide how this ends."
Arjun took her hand.
"Together?"
Pooja squeezed it.
"Together."
CHAPTER 12: THE GHOST TAKES EVERYTHING
Rudra waited for Pooja in the mansion's great hall.
Karthik was nowhere to be seen.
Pooja entered with Arjun, carrying a small flashlight and the evidence they had collected.
"Where is Karthik?" she demanded.
Rudra appeared on the staircase.
"Safe. For now."
"You don't have to hurt anyone," Pooja said. "Tell us what happened that night."
Rudra's face darkened.
"They betrayed me. My father wanted to send me away. My mother chose them over me."
"You frightened them. You threatened them."
"They were going to take everything!"
"And what did you do?" Pooja asked.
For a moment, Rudra's expression changed.
Then the walls began to shake.
The hall transformed into a vision of the past. Pooja saw a carriage racing through the storm, a man shouting, and frightened faces behind a window.
Rudra's voice echoed around her.
"Look what they made me become!"
The vision changed.
Now Pooja saw Arjun lying motionless on the floor.
She screamed and ran toward him.
The image dissolved into smoke.
Rudra appeared beside her.
"Choose me, and no one else will suffer."
Pooja stepped away.
"Love is a choice. You cannot force it."
Rudra's face twisted with rage.
The floor opened beneath her feet.
She fell into darkness.
When she awoke, she was inside a sealed underground chamber.
On the wall, someone had carved a message:
THE HOUSE WILL NOT RELEASE ITS MASTER UNTIL THE TRUTH IS SPOKEN.
Pooja realised that Rudra wasn't merely haunting the mansion.
Something was keeping him there.
And the secret was buried beneath her feet.
