Great Ride!
"This was a great book from beginning to end. So many characters can be overwhelming at first, but stick with it and you're able to work out who's who. The author did well with drip-feeding info and surprising me with twists I didn't guess. The ending was fulfilling and didn't leave anything hanging. The description and detail was enthralling in this, and there was no doubt as to who or what was being discussed. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting a thriller that will leave you guessing till the very end. "
Creative Conspiracy at its best!
"H.R. Kemp delivers a conspiracy thriller that will keep you tuned in to the very end. She created a story packed with corruption, abuse of power both domestically and politically that one would feel it has been ripped from the headlines of any major paper. She even manages to weave in a tad of unexpected romance along the way. Kemp's writing strength is apparent in her ability to bring the reader to the foreign country she is intricately describing but also fashions her array of characters in such a way that we can find ourselves despising Prime Minister Wrogarth with such ease and cheering on Shelley's surprising journey of love. Greed, power and good triumphing over evil will not disappoint you in Deadly Secrets. H.R. Kemp's writing is clean, she has an attention to detail that is impeccable and should not be overlooked."
Deadly Secrets
"HR Kemp has written a powerful story that touches on universal themes we can all relate to: political corruption, the abuse of power, human rights. The story constantly surprises up until the very last chapter. Throughout I found myself going through a range of emotions: anger, surprise, fear, sadness, relief. Just when I thought I figured it out, the author put in another twist. The story looks at the importance of speaking out against injustice even when it’s hard. Characters in the novel often had to search within to find the courage to do the right thing. The author does a nice job getting into the conscience of the characters as they struggle with the truth. I also felt a deep sadness reading this book. While I don’t know the politics of Australia, currently the political culture in the United States is divisive, everyone seems to be against everyone else. Greed and fear drive decisions. People look out for themselves and fail to feel the pain of those not like them. This book touches on all these issues and, sadly, it is an authentic look at contemporary life."
Deadly Secrets
"I'm not finished yet, but since I've taken too long to review, I just wanted to say that this is one of the best thrillers I've read on this site. It's intriguing, suspenseful, you feel for the characters and the plot makes you want to know what happens next at each chapter."
A political thriller for today
"When headlines read like a real-life political thriller, we need stories that don't just satisfy our desire for thrills. We want to feel a sense of justice as brave people battle powerful forces of cynicism and corruption. H.R. Kemp's Deadly Secrets delivers. The story follows Shelley, a functionary in Australia's immigration department, as she struggles to find out how one of her immigrant friends died. She uncovers plenty of deadly secrets, from abuse of migrants, environmentally destructive policies, and political machinations. Along the way, she finds romance with a mysterious stranger and must make a series of life-changing decisions. We also discover the deadly secrets of those in power, from Prime Minister James Wrogarth and those around him. Shelley's dangerous journey and the secrets of the politicians that run her country converge towards a shocking, thrilling climax. This book is an intense page-turner, thanks to beautifully crafted and well-rounded characters. The twists and turns of the plot keep us fearing and rooting for characters we have come to care about. Deadly Secrets touches on a wide range of contemporary issues, including immigration, climate change, the effects of environmental destruction, and global political corruption. Kemp puts them together in a thrilling, twisting thriller with engaging, unforgettable characters. Deadly Secrets is the perfect political thriller for today."
Deadly Secrets
"To take politically-charged issues that have polarized sentiments, and to weave them into a page-turning mystery, make for a provocative plot. The characters are compelling and evoke myriad emotions. It speaks to truths involving environmental concerns, human rights, big business and politics. Very enjoyable read. - Mark Mijuskovic. "
Deadly Secrets
"In the novel, Deadly Secrets, Kemp has created a masterful concoction of suspense, action, mystery, and even romance. Brimming with the political controversies of the day, this novel possesses a sense of reality that can make any reader a conspiracy theorist. All in all, this is a very entertaining read that leaves the reader in want of nothing. The writing style is smooth and on point, and the descriptions given make a reader think they are right there in the action. Excellent work!"
Wonderfully descriptive
"I actually planned on taking the week to read this, but I couldn't put it down, and finished in 2 days. Writing a good romance within the plot of a thriller isn't an easy feat, because I find that often the thrill and drama are overshadowed by the romance, or vice versa. But this author did an amazing job at keeping both engaging. Another aspect that I loved was the current affairs. A good book is often said to be "evergreen," able to remain relevant (or at least not obsolete) regardless of the time period that the reader is, and this book did just that. I feel that, even in 20 years, this book will still speak to the lives of the readers just as much as it does today. This was such a good read. "
Great Read!
"This book is very engaging, its best qualities are that of the relevance of the plot line in everyday life - the depiction of controversial social and political issues, the fantastic character arcs. Shelley's character is spectacularly drawn. I also love how effectively the author manages to overlap the thrilling plot with the romantic entanglements of the narrative. All these elements, woven together compellingly with a vivid and mesmerising use of description is really what gives this book its five stars. Thank you for the read, I enjoyed it immensely. "
Love the story!
"This such an incredibly well thought out plot, it is amazing. The characters feel real and the way the story is told is so unpretentious, it feels like the author is actually 'telling' the story!"
an ambitious success
"Intelligent, expertly choreographed. Characters are believable enough that in addressing the issues they never come off as preachy, though Adrian perhaps comes the closest; then again he is a passionate fellow. Just make sure a tirade never becomes a speech. It's refreshing to read something that tackles current affairs and politics head-on. I haven't discovered anything else like this on Inkitt so far, but I hope I do again because it kept me hooked. On a grammatical note, there were commas where I wouldn't have had them and they were lacking where I would've put them, but that's largely down to personal preference, not hard and steady rules. It was a seamless, breezy read to be sure, which isn't to say it doesn't place a reasonable demand on the reader's cognition. Please keep writing! I can see a final draft of this flying off shelves some day. The sooner the better. Though sadly I don't think there's any risk of the socio-political maladies you address becoming passe anytime soon."
Deadly Secrets Review
"Deadly secrets is an intriguing tale depicting the events unfolding around the political intrigue. With the growing interest in climate change talking this subjectputs a sense of freshness in the topic in a more fictional sense that feels all too real. There were times throughout the book that I felt the pacing was a bit rushed and could have slowed down to explore potential avenues with the characters. A good example was when you delved into the realm of the Wrothgar fella and his phone call. This was enticing and gave the reader a different perspective. Small things like this truly made your work shine. While reading your work I truly got the sense of a spy thriller in some regard perhaps a little adventure with all the key points they seems to travel to. Your depictions of these regions for example were effective and further progressed the story to add a sense of a larger theme. You as an author did an excellent job in showing us the readers instead of telling. I could sense the dread or feel the damp air when reading your work. Your words explaining each event seemed to carefully draw on the story even more. Though this is not the genre of book I tend to read, I would still recommend this for those interested in the thriller/mystery genre."
Deadly Secrets
"I really enjoyed the novel Deadly Secrets as it has an excellent and intriguing plot which the writer builds on throughout the book. The ending is a surprise and the story is cleverly put together. I think H.R. Kemp has a good writing style so please keep on writing books. Jill Ward"
A Complex, Comprehensive Thrill Ride with Sharp Social Observation
"This intricate socio-political thriller takes the reader through a mind-spinning myriad of mystery and intrigue while generating a delicious pallet of both likable and detestable characters. Each main character slowly unravels the puzzle pieces to the seemingly impossibly disparate threads that weave the tapestry of this massive conspiracy story. The writing style is sublimely professional, active when the story calls for action, descriptive, when the story requires detail and scene-setting, romantic at just the right touching moments and downright chilling at others. The writer's depth of understanding and spot-on insight into political mechanization, maneuvering and maniacal self-serving corporate selfishness provide a biting commentary on today's political environment, accentuated by a perfectly drawn set of contemporary conflicts that seem like hyperbolic satire, but all too closely pinch the nerve of truth. Almost overwhelming in its rich detail and in-depth discovery of political corruption and complex social issues, the novel challenges the reader to think beyond the action and intrigue and contemplate the broader social and political condition. This writer has all the makings of a commercial success as well as a literary tour-de-force and should have no difficulty finding an audience and attracting a publisher."
DEADLY SECRETS

review of Deadly Secrets, by Charmaine Palmer
"I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel.. The characters were well written and progressed throughout the story to be very believable. The plot was interesting, modern in content and held my interest to the end. The author had obviously researched her backgrounds thorougly, which gave the story a sense of reality. I felt particularly invested in the protest scenes at the beginning, hearing the sounds and sharing the emotions of the unfolding drama made me feel as though I were there. I look forward to reading more from this author."
Deadly Secrets
"With a cast of characters to rival a Charles Dickens novel and a complex interplay of political, moral and social themes, there is something in this book for everyone. Many readers will relate to the main character Shelley, as she strives to shake off the shackles of her conventional life so far and live according to her principles. And, as this novel so deftly demonstrates, there is a lot about contemporary life in Australia (or substitute any (neo)liberal 'democracy') that challenges progressive values. For me this book passed the most crucial test of all - the bedtime test - which meant that I found myself looking forward to an early night tucked up in bed with my electric blanket and iPad, taking in the next instalment. I would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in political and social issues."
Deadly Secrets
"Deadly Secrets is an exciting, suspenseful, page turner of a novel, referencing many controversial issues in Australian society. The dominant issue is that of political corruption. The issues of domestic violence, treatment of asylum seekers and illegal mining activities are woven into the story.. I was held in suspense wondering how the different threads would come together. I was gripped by the vividly depicted scenes of the demonstration in Paris, the torture of a wrongfully suspected terrorist, the escape of an ill asylum seeker from a detention centre. The gently evolving romance of the main protagonist Shelley and Adrian ,whose identity surprises, is a counterpoint to the dramatic episodes. A thought provoking thoroughly good read!"
Deadly Secrets
"An exciting and intriguing thriller set in the current international business and political scene. Interesting and believable characters. The action takes place in Paris, Barcelona and Australia. Great entertainment."
