Introduction
What does it mean to be a millennial? Well, according to the general public, and by general public I mean people from the western world, there is no precise definition. Doesn’t that sound silly? Of course, there is a definition and it goes something like this: a millennial is a person who was born into Generation Y. Now, what is Generation Y? It’s a term used to describe individuals who were born during a certain time frame. What time frame to be exact? And that is precisely why I mentioned there is no exact definition because there is no real time frame for people who are considered to be millennials. For this particular book, I will be referring to people who were born in the early 1980’s all the way through the early 2000’s as millennials. I realize some may argue people born in the late 1990’s all the way through the present are not considered millennials but instead belong to generation z. This argument has merit, but being a 21-year-old born in 1996, I consider myself a millennial. Truth be told, I’m at the border between generation y and generation z.
This is a book based on my life from my point of view as a millennial. Yes, it’s my story but it’s also the story of many with whom I share similarities with. It’s not just about sharing my story as a millennial, but about including stories that I’ve learned from my fellow millennials. I want to provide a glimpse of the life of a millennial and what better way than to do so than to write about my own life and include storylines of real individuals who I have crossed paths with. What I write in this book is not intended to imply everyone in my generation is the same, but to emphasize that there are people who I have discovered are far more similar to who I am than I realized.
This will be a short and sweet story about myself, my fellow millennials, and most importantly I will write about observations I’ve gathered throughout my years. If you’re a millennial, then read on and see if you can connect with anything that I have written.
Every chapter will focus on one single word or phrase I consider to be important in today’s world. I want to clarify that before you read on, I will most likely use the word millennial frequently and as you read you may find yourself cringing at any possible generalizations I may accidentally mention, but I need to address this once more: I understand everyone is different and if I generalize it’s not to say every millennial or person is the same, but to address commonalities specifically knowing there are those who behave differently.
