Take me to church

"Take me to church fulfills everything I want in a thriller! Starting off with the plot, I found the plot intriguing and there were various occasions where I felt the chills that the characters were going through. I truly feel like the author has a true knack for creating suspense. As for writing style, I really appreciate how much work the author put into developing each character's personality and make sure that even though the book was dark, there were a lot of relatable characters. However, I'd like to see more spacing between the paragraphs. If you are looking for a dark, gory, and intriguing book that keeps you on the edge of your seat, I definitely recommend checking out take me to church. Oh, and Mr. Bartleby... When is the rest of the book coming out? I can't wait to see how this develops! I'm hooked! "

Seriously talented writer

"I found your ongoing story listed in the "New year, new genre" contest and I think you are a serious contestant. You surely are very talented, your style is dark and realistic, your descriptions are very sharp and your action scenes are dense and vigorous. Yet there is a lot of humour all along with the story which makes the flow very lively, very smooth. Your characters get better with every chapter and you're doing an awesome job at making them feel close to the reader. Even when the supernatural strikes, your characters feel very plausible. Nothing is exaggerated here and this is something very rare in Urban Fantasy stories, so well done here! And your plots, plot twists and cliffhangers hooked me. At the end of every chapter., I just wanted to read more. I'm not gonna go into details here so I don't ruin the story for other readers, but in one word: Fence. I really want to read the final story when you'll be done writing it, so please feel free to contact me when your book is complete. Your book is insanely underrated compared to other books on Inkitt and I hope you get the recognition you deserve. You're killing it."

Wow!!

"Where do I even begin with this? This was an incredibly well written suspenseful, action packed mysterious story that kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time! They say to write what you know, and I can tell that you know London extremely well-you made me feel as though I was there! On a more serious note, my only issue with this story was the ‘fall from grace’ chapter. I had to take a bit of a mental health break after that chapter because I found it very disturbing. Which, I understand why you included it, but the content, particularly the implied assault of Chloe rubbed me the wrong way for reasons I won’t get into here. With all this said, I’d suggest putting a disclaimer or trigger warning before that chapter just so people know what’s coming, but that’s just me. And honestly that’s the only problem I had with the story. With that note aside, I really enjoyed the story! I’m glad fence is okay, I had a feeling he wasn’t really gone :) Also, I love the supernatural touches you’ve added. They don’t feel silly or out of place, but gritty and realistic, and the action scenes were incredibly well written-I could imagine the action so clearly in my head, so fantastic job with that. Overall an incredibly enticing, well written story that I will definitely be recommending to others! Fantastic job! :) "

Can't wait for the complete story!

"I'm reviewing this while it is currently a work in progress and I just have to say: "Wow!" Inkitt is mostly filled with poorly written suspenseless stories (mostly cheap romance or the penultimate over-told werewolf banality) but this, this is close to a masterpiece! Characters are believable and lovable (Fence has my vote!), so believable you find yourself thinking one could have been your best friend, Plots and intrigues are also believable but slowly shift into these paranormal situations with a bit of demonic atmosphere and it makes you question the protagonists and their goals. And when the author finally spreads a few answers, you end up asking yourself more questions. There are tense cliffhangers and really emotional moments in this unfinished story. But the fact that everything is linked, everything has a reason to happen and nothing comes out of nowhere is what I really like the most with this work. If you are into Noire thrillers, angels and demons paranormal stories, this is a must-read! Congratulations to the author, you're doing a great job with this story, please make sure you finish it, I cannot wait to read some more."

I Loved it so much

"This story was so well told and so well detailed and descriptive that it literally played out like a live action film for me. I was immediately taken in and hooked wanting more with each chapter that I finished. I never wanted it to end. The thought and time that went into putting this masterpiece together shows in how the story was uniquely broken down. I fell in love with each of the characters and went through different emotions as I read. I am honestly really inspired and I hope that one day I am equally able to present something as magnificent as this story was. I want to say thank you to the author because you sir did a great deed in giving us this well put together MOVIE lol."

Take Me To Church

"Awesome read, and even has some killer mood music if you pay attention to the chapter titles. Love these characters, seedy degenerate but redeemable and just plain likeable. The whole thing is kind of grimy in the best of ways. Give this one a shot, you won't regret it. "

A dark and intriguing tale

"I was pleasantly surprised by the way the supernatural is weaved into the world, sometimes clashing with humans in ways they do not understand or even comprehend. The beginning was a great hook, and everything was explained in due time. The mystery behind everything is unraveled in a nice, flowing way, and it sets a good pace. The narration threw me off a little as the first-person narrator seems to be omnipotent, which is not something I've seen before. If that was the intention, then it was pulled off without a hitch. A once-over would do this book good to fix some missing words here and there as well as some other grammar issues. It was a good story with memorable characters and descriptions to the people and places starring in it, and I would recommend it to anyone who wishes a thrilling read. . -Author of Hollow's Charge"

Hooked!

"10 pages in and I can't put the book down. The opening scene with the little girl made me feel tense, before making my heart sink. The introduction to the main character is perfect, with a sleazy casino being the right setting for a noir. This boom is a nice, easy read for anyone who likes their detective fiction."

Totally HOOKED UP

"I was looking for a urban/dark fantasy thriller and your story does not disappoint. This is action packed from the first chapter. I like how every character is different but altogether, good or bad they all have their dark sides and there is more than meet the eye to all of them. Your plots are excellent, every chapter brings new questions and some answers. And often those answers bring even more questions. I like your character development and all the ties between them would it be from their past or actions they are taking. This is by far one of the best books on Inkitt and it needs more exposure. I wish this was completed but I have faith you will continue to upload chapters until completion. Keep on the good work, you're onto something here."

Talented Writer - Tense, Dark Story

"Chepper D, Levine shows off some serious writing chops in his tense, dark-noire thriller "Take Me to Church". Levine's style calls to mind the films of Quentin Tarantino with his fast-paced, action-packed sense of dramatic danger, his gruesome scenes of torture and death and his tense cast of bad-ass antagonists. He manages to present a likable cast of highly flawed lead characters that keep the reader engaged for fear of their fate within the dangerous world of Levine's imagined London slums. Unlike a Tarantino narrative, Levine infuses a unique brand of creative fantasy with a mysterious series of interactions between several heavenly angels and ruthless demons, who work to manipulate the human characters at various key points throughout the story. Levine's depiction of these powerful creatures is fascinating and adds a unique, off-balance element to his intriguing work. The novel would benefit from a round of editing to trim some excess description in the late chapters that - on one hand - present interesting elements of the story and character development, but too often slow the pace of an otherwise break-neck plot that keeps the reader on the edge of the seat. More problematic than the slightly erratic pacing of the story is the narration that seems to waffle between a tight first-person experiential point of view and what, at other times, comes across as an omniscient third person voice. While positioned by the writer as the later retelling of the story by the main character who expresses the first person perspective, the shifting point of view and the omniscient elements of the storytelling too often distract the reader from full credibility of the perspective. Levine should probably shift to either a full-on first-person approach, which would render much of the story outside the main character's observation to be invalid or an end-to-end third person POV, which would risk some of the intimacy with which the reader gets to know the main character. Given that parts of the story describe people's inner thoughts and interactions between demons from a hell-like non-human world, the first person perspective could not possibly know many of the described details and, as such, should probably be shifted to the omniscient third person voice. The writer also has a tendency to use passive verbs where minor sentence restructuring could better highlight more active phrasing, thereby even better contributing to the action-oriented nature of the narrative. Simply, sentences that describe action using a form of the verb "to be" could be shifted away from past perfect to simple past tense. Hence, Levine should look to shift from phrases like "...was driving" simply to "...drove", "...was punching" to "...punched", "...was thinking" to "...thought" or "...pondered" or even something more dramatic like "...struggled to understand". In this way, he could heighten the intensity of his prose even more than he does. Also, a little difficult is the sense of equal time Levine gives to such a wide range of characters. The reader may achieve even higher engagement if the story could follow the main character more closely and focus a little less on democratically providing so many characters with near equal story time. As a result of this shifting focus on different characters, Levine accomplishes the positive outcome of delving deeply into several intriguing individuals. But, this positive outcome also results in a feeling that the story lacks some focus and a singular, cohesive arc from act 1 to 2 and ultimately to conclusion. The title, as with the name of each chapter, points to the rock or pop song that the author thinks of when reading each chapter. Should the reader choose to listen to each song just before or during the act of reading each chapter, these titles become meaningful. However, should the reader choose to read in silence, the significance of the title and chapter headings is lost. The author is advised to take this into consideration in future edits as the concept failed to work for me as I consumed the story. In fairness, the novel is not yet complete, so it remains to be seen how some of the disparate threads come together or to what degree the main character is given the runway to stand out among the cast. The point of view issues should still be addressed as several other reviewers also logged similar commentary. In all, Chepper D. Levine shows himself to have immense talent as a writer. While still a bit raw, his ability to craft a compelling story with solid three-dimensional characters, an innovative plot and especially a dark, dreadful but captivating tone and mood comes out very strongly in "Take Me To Church". I thoroughly enjoyed reading his work and highly recommend this novel - especially as he continues to edit and refine it."

Great Start!

"This is a great start for a story of this almost overworked caliber. It almost reminds me of The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare and an amine I watched. You're writing style is very visual and promising, but my only concern would be to hold back on some of the less important detail, or the more important, larger deatils will be lost in the scatter. However, that's my opinion, you don't need to take it. So far, I really like it."

Dark and Suspenseful

"Take Me to Church is a dark, suspenseful story that grabs hold and doesn’t let go. Full of intrigue and suspense, the story is well-composed and draws the reader into its dangerous world of mystery. Point of view was switched several times, used as a unique device, which confused me at times but did not detract from the overall readability of the story. This was a gritty, fast paced thriller that kept me engaged the entire time. My congratulations to the author - I look forward to reading the rest of the story."
