Prologue

May 5th, 2019

I smiled to myself as I signed my new name on the paper, confirming the change from Charlotte to Charles. “Charlie” I thought to myself “Charlie Davis”. I had never been happier.

As I walked outside I heard a weird noise. A whistle, what the hell, was someone catcalling me? I looked around to see who it was a lanky man with messy brown hair was leaned against the wall. “Hey beautiful, I’m Adam, who’re you?” he said.

“I-I’m sorry I’m pretty sure I’m not who you think I am.”

“And I’m pretty sure you are,” he said, walking towards me.

“Look, man, I’m not a lady, I’m a dude, please leave me alone.”

He squinted his eyes and looked me over. “Yeah right, you f*ckin’ tranny!”

I turned and walked away from him. I keept my head down, thinking about what in the world just happened. Nevemind, I tell myself, go to the library, you need some books.

Without thinking I pushed open the door to the library, but it just so happens, there was someone standing behind it. I heard a painful thonk as the door hit him. I looked up to see him rubbing his forehead.

“Oh my god, I’m so sorry!” I said sounding rather girlish. “A-Are you alright?” I tried again, much better.

The guy chuckled, “yeah,” he said. “yeah, I’m fine,” he moved his hand, making a few strands of his chocolate hair fall over his forehead. “See? Didn’t even leave a scratch.”

“I’m sorry,” I said again. God, what a horrible way to meet someone. “My name is, uh, Charlie,” I said holding out my hand for him to shake.

“I’m Mark,” he said. “Uh, sorry, I have to head to class,” he said before stepping through the already open door.

Well, I thought to myself, that sucked. But I’ll probably never see him again.

Boy was I wrong.
