Chapter 1

Darkness; the word can be addressed in several different ways. Darkness can affect someone’s ability to see, but it can also be addressed as a feeling. The sensation you receive when you feel enraged, a somber feeling and sometimes the feeling of fear. The senses can be overwhelming, the feeling of being surrounded by it. Most people in their lives have a moment where they feel darkness surrounding them, and for those who have it as a daily part of their lives, they’ll reach a point where everything will end.

As I lay here on the frigid hard stone floor, I realize that I’m one of those people who have it a part of their daily life. The feeling of fear overwhelms me when I soon comprehend that my body is slowly ceasing to function. I can no longer feel my fingers nor my toes. I feel the poison of numbness escalating upward my arms and legs, soon to encroach to my chest, making me fight to breathe. I try to move my body, but in the end, my efforts are fruitless. Feeling utterly helpless in the state I’m in, I comprehend the situation. The end is near for me. I can feel my own heartbeat start to slow, knowing the strength in my body fades. My eyelids start to become heavy, and I try to use the last bit of strength that I have to keep my eyes open.

Suddenly I hear a faded call, but I can’t hear it clearly. I try moving my head toward the direction of the voice, seeing a faded figure heading toward me. They call out again, this time it being more clear.

“Lance!”

As the figure comes closer to my limp body, my vision begins to fade. Darkness takes a new form, no longer it being a feeling, but literal darkness. The figure runs next to me, but as close as they are, I can only see a blurry, indiscernible faded outline.

“Stay with me Lance!” the voice called.

I try to speak, but no sound escapes my lips. I feel the numbness finally taking over my whole body, and I slowly start closing my eyes, observing the last few moments of the figure attempting to speak to me. I finally close my eyes in defeat, and I could no longer see anything. I was surrounded by darkness.
