Summary

It's 1784. St. Augustine, Florida, never a part of the thirteen colonies, belongs to Spain again as the American Revolution ends and Spain sends the town a new governor to rule. A highly superstitious man who doesn't think he is, the new judge, a romantic man at heart, gets a strange Treason and Murder case that the English ruler before him didn't want to finish up with. Flora, the quiet, desperate, lovely English plantation wife of the accused man, pleads for her husband's life to Judge Vicente. And then, once the verdict has come down, the strangest most mysterious thing of all happens that no one can explain... Epistolary, historical, the mysterious events are told through an entry in the judge's diary looking back and from the plantation wife's letter to her father. What IS the truth? The judge's or hers?

Love Sonata 1784, an 18th-century Mystery Suspense Novelette (Content Advisory & Dedication)

Love Sonata 1784

by

Troy Arrandale

Being the history at the end of the American Revolution of a judge who’s presented with an unusual Murder and Treason case who has to ask himself, “Is there such a thing as magick?“*

*18th‑century spelling, phrasing and way of random capitalizing I use for fun.

Author’s Note #1: Sometimes I use a few 18th‑century spellings or ways of saying things here or there throughout the novelette which is harder for modern readers to understand (like me! lol), but I tried to limit it. This is a work of pure fiction and even though I use a couple of real historical figures, I mess with some of the dates and their words and deeds are purely my imagination.

Author’s Note #2: WARNING. Non‑humanitarian practices, slavery and unequal rights of minorities, women and children may be depicted due to the historical setting and time period.

For Bob, Sally and Dee. And my brother John whoexpressed an interest when I told him the story tagline but who doesn’t read much anymore. Thanks for your support.
