Chapter 1

The fire dances through the poppy fields lighting everything in its path. A cloud of smoke hangs thick in the street of my kingdom, destruction and chaos echo through the streets as everyone shouts for their missing loved ones.

Diablo's army has passed our defenses, laying waste to everything in their way. Slaughtering innocent children, just to claim their dominance.

The kingdom has fallen, and Diablo has taken charge of our only portal and our only way out. Soon he will come for me and take me as his trophy, with my father's head on a spike and my brother next to him.

“Princess Skyla, please hurry! We need to get you to the royal soul chamber.” My knight in shining armor storms into my room.

“Why? Where is my father and brother, have they already gone?” he scratches his chin and shakes his head.

“You will be the only one to leave this kingdom, The king has given me the orders to see you off and make sure everything goes smoothly, so please princess, let me do my job and keep you save.” He kneels in front of me, exposing his vulnerability, with horror hiding behind those deep green eyes.

“The kingdom's faith rests in your hands now” His afraid of what's to come. My father storms in with blood dripping from his sword. “ Skyla! Why haven’t you left yet?! Diablo has broken throw our defenses and is minutes away from storming our castle!! Rupert, take her now! You can still make it.” I rise out of my chair and was about to give my father a piece of my mind when Rupert grab my arm and pull me out the door.

“Father, you can’t stay!! Please!!” with tear burning in my eyes, Rupert looks at me apologetically as we run down the hall.

“Sorry Princess, but you are our last hope.” He says in a whisper pulling me along.

We enter the royal family soul chamber, where Mercury our elder awaits us.

“Princess Skyla! So glad to see you made it!” Rupert hastily opens up a chamber door and gestures for me to get in.

"Please I can't just leave them." My voice cracks through the stream of tears that now forms a road down my cheeks.

“We need you to be safe, Princess, you are the only one who can restore the kingdom to its formal glory. Please, we already found you a suitable match. Mercury will place a spell on your body so no one can find it until your return.” I can hear the sorrow in his voice, he knows how it feels to lose your home and everything you know.

I hesitated for a minute, knowing all too well, I might never return to my home. Swallowing hard on my heartache.“Rupert, please try to keep my father safe. He is all I have left now.” He nods as I step in, he shuts the door and locks it, "Don't worry princess, I'll see you soon." A shade grin appears on Mercury's face, which made my stomach tumble.

Mercury starts the spell and a dark cloud fills the room. I feel my body turning ice cold as my soul escapes my corpse. In a matter of seconds, everything is pitch black. I start to turn to this unknown and empty place. Everything starts to disappear as I get sucked into the dark and cold hole.

This must be the limbo part everyone talked about, I never experienced it before now.“Soul paring” as they called it. All I know is my body is stuck in my kingdom while my soul is being placed in a new host, the only problem is that whoever body I intercept may fight me for it and if they win I will be sent back to limbo and will never be able to save my kingdom.

I see a bright light and it starts to lure me in, like a black hole devouring its victims. I try to make my escape, but I'm too weak to fight it and get pulled in.

As it sucks me in I feel the warmth returning to me and fresh air fills my or her lungs. The paring is complete.
