Chapter 1
Ariel walked toward Dylan’s house because he had been ignoring her all day. Before she could even knock on the door, Cassia, Dylan’s mom, opened the door greeting her. “Hey, Ariel.” Ariel greeted her back and then walked into the house.
Dylan has a big family and they are very close to each other. He has three sisters and one brother. They are all 10 months apart and close in age. He has two older sisters and he is the third of five children. Ariel has been friends with his three sisters for a long time ever since they started college at 18. Ariel is now 21 and has been dating Dylan for 2 years.
Cassia went up to Ariel and said, “Dylan has been quiet today; is everything fine? He won’t talk to me or his sisters that much.” Ariel responded, “Everything is fine, I'll talk to him though.” Cassia nodded then Ariel saw Dylan walk off. Ariel followed him to the pier that was attached to their house. She slowed down once she saw Lisa waiting at the end of the pier.
She wondered why Lisa was there but what she saw next broke her heart. She decided to take a picture so she could have proof but instead of taking a picture she accidentally pressed the record button. Once Dylan and Lisa pulled away from each other’s embrace, Dylan spoke. “We shouldn’t keep doing this.” Ariel decided that was enough for her eyes and ears so she spoke, “I wondered why you were ignoring me for the past two days and now I know why.”
Ariel turned around to walk away. Dylan was shocked and surprised to see that Ariel had followed him out. He tried to run and grab her to talk but she moved fast and was back into his house trying to make it to his front door and leave. She was stopped in the living room by his mom who could tell something was wrong. Ariel tried to make sure she held back her tears until she made it home. Cassia asked, “What’s wrong?” This made all her other children stop and look at Ariel to see what was wrong.
Before she could respond, Dylan had made his way to her and grabbed her arm. “Please let me go, Dylan, just please,” Ariel’s voice cracked. Before he could respond Lisa was already holding his arm saying, “Baby just let her go.” He snatched his arm away from Lisa as his family screamed, “Baby!” They were all shocked to hear that since they know Ariel and Dylan were a couple. But this little scene made it easier for Ariel to reach the front door and walk out.
Cassia was right behind her and stopped to ask again what was wrong. Ariel just took out her phone and showed Cassia the video. Ariel whispered, “I love him,” as Cassia gasped while looking at the video. “But my love isn’t enough for him and this video will help me remember where I stand in his heart. Thank you Mrs. Cassia for always treating me like your daughter and a member of the family.”
Cassia interrupted her, “No, you are my daughter and a member of my family. Don’t go calling me Mrs. now it will always be Cassia to you and you are always welcome here no matter what, sweetheart.” Cassia gave Ariel a big motherly hug and then let her go.
Ariel ran home and ran to her room crying as she lay down in bed. Her phone dinged as messages and calls came from Dylan. The first message on the screen read, “Baby it’s not like that. I can explain.” She decided it would be best for her to cut her phone off and stop communicating with him. She knew if she was to cut off her phone, she would have to let her mom know so she wouldn’t be too worried about her.
She called her mom and Rita answered on the first ring. “Hey, Ariel.” She took a deep breath before she said anything to her mom. “Mom, I will cut my phone off for a couple of days because I need to work something out. I was just letting you know that you won't be able to contact me for the next couple of days but I will be fine.”
Her mom could tell something was wrong though. “What happened? Tell me please.” She didn’t want to go into detail with her mom because she wanted her to continue to like Dylan and she knew how close Cassia and her mom had become. “Dylan and I broke up because he kissed someone else.”
Rita was stunned to hear that because she thought they were in love. She knew her daughter was in love and happy with him. “Could it have been a misunderstanding Ariel and he didn’t mean to kiss the girl but she kissed him?”
Her mom didn’t want to believe that Dylan could cheat on her daughter but the words that came out of Ariel’s mouth were heartbreaking to hear. “No mom they kissed passionately while he held her waist and she had her arms around his neck. Then he said they shouldn’t do it again, which implies that they had done it before and would probably do it again.”
Her mom could hear the heartbreak in her daughter’s voice. “Okay baby, I’m so sorry. I will hop on the next flight to come down there. You can cut off your phone, I will use your spare key to get in your house.” Ariel realized that Dylan knew where that spare key was so she told her mom she would move the key from under the mat to a flower pot so she could get inside the house. Her mom told her okay and got off the phone with Ariel so she could pack and leave.
Ariel moved the key then went back to bed and fell into a deep sleep while crying about Dylan. Rita made it to her place and found the key to be let inside. She opened the door and made her way to the guest room. They always prided themselves on being able to pay for her college and get her a place to rent so she wouldn’t have to deal with other roommates.
